We wouldn't be here if we didn't think we could overhaul Celtic, says new Rangers chairman Cavenagh

Daily Mail4 hours ago

Andrew Cavenagh says the new regime at Ibrox is convinced they'll return Rangers to the top of Scottish football.
Three weeks after the American consortium took control, its initial £20m investment was waved through at a general meeting in Glasgow on Monday morning.
And health care tycoon Cavenagh, the club's new chairman, immediately set the goal of ending Celtic 's domination of the domestic game.
'We think it is achievable, or we wouldn't be here,' said the businessman.
'We don't think it will be easy. It is not going to happen instantaneously, but we will strive to improve the on-field performance and we will continue to build the infrastructure of the club.
'If we didn't think we could win, we wouldn't be here. We are here because we think we can.
'There is real work to be done, I think everyone is aware of that.
'Paraag (Marathe, vice-chairman) and I are two of the least patient people you will meet and we are also incredibly competitive. So, we share our supporters' sense of urgency. We are in with both feet today and we will move this forward as fast as we can.'
Meeting the media for the first time, Cavenagh revealed how he was persuaded to get involved with Rangers, and disclosed the new board's plans for the future including the redevelopment of Ibrox.
In a wide-ranging interview, he also explained how the new regime want to make Rangers Champions League regulars, why they feel Russell Martin is the right man to deliver that and the need to run the club sustainably.
Keen to stress that he and his colleagues are in for the long haul, Cavenagh is adamant they won't rest until they believe Rangers is fulfilling its potential
'I would give you the simple answer which is we have been finishing second and we would like to finish first,' he added. 'We are one position away from where we would like to be.'
Cavenagh vowed that he and his fellow directors will try to honour the club's history by writing a glorious new chapter.
'It's a physical experience when you walk upstairs,' he said. 'You walk up the marble stairs and the hall and the Blue Room and the trophy room in particular and you can just feel the history in the club.
'There is no other way to describe it, you walk in and you instantly feel indebted to what has gone before you, but you also have the desire to do everything you possibly can to not just continue the history, but to improve the trajectory.'

Man Utd transfer news LIVE: Huge Bryan Mbeumo second bid MADE, Nkunku ‘TALKS opened', Rashford exit latest

Wreck it Ralf Former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has slammed the club's lack of leadership and questioned their transfer policy. Rangnick was vocal in his criticism of United during his stint in charge and called for sweeping changes to be made, particularly in recruitment. The Austria manager has emphasised that argument once again, recommending Man Utd move away from a transfer model of signing experienced players like Casemiro, and towards young players. If I were the owner or sporting director of a club, I would only try to sign and invest in young players. Because no matter how you look at it, it only makes sense. Does it make sense to spend £30, 40, 50 million on a 28 or 30-year-old signing? Not really. Let's calculate it. You sign a 28 or 30-year-old with a five-year contract. You spend £50m more on the transfer fee, an average of £15m per year multiplied by five. That's £65m plus the £50m transfer fee equals £115m, plus the agents' fees. The whole operation costs you around £130m. Ralf RangnickSport

'Big man' Acquah joins Dundee from Barrow

"Dundee are a big club and when I heard of the interest, I just wanted to get here. Coming to Scotland is a good new challenge for me, so far I've just played in England and I feel like I want something different."I'm a big man but I'm good with the ball at my feet."I like to make to runs behind and I will always work hard for the team and I'm always looking to get goals. "As a striker, you get judged by how many times you put the ball in the net and hopefully, I can do that many times this season."

England star Josh Tongue sends warning to India ahead of 'blockbuster' final day of thrilling first Test

Josh Tongue believes England can pull off another Headingley miracle on day five having been set 371 to win a 'blockbuster' first Test against India. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett survived a 30-minute examination from Jasprit Bumrah last night to reach 21 for 0 at stumps on day four, after Tongue's three-wicket burst helped dismiss India for 364 in their second innings. Ben Stokes ' side now need another 350 runs on the final day in Leeds to complete the second-highest run chase in their history and go 1-0 up in the series. And Tongue says England can take inspiration from their famous 2019 Ashes win here at Headingley, when they successfully knocked off 359 against Australia thanks to Stokes' heroic 135. 'I remember Stokes' innings here against the Aussies, and I feel like with our batting line-up we can chase down anything,' said Tongue, who took three wickets in one over to mop up India's tail. 'We are really confident. Our batting line-up is obviously very strong and we play a positive brand of cricket. The changing room is very positive to chase these runs down. Headingley has a habit of producing remarkable finishes — just like the 2019 Ashes when Ben Stokes scored a brilliant 135 not out to steer England to their fourth-innings target of 359 'The bowlers will bowl well in periods, but it is about soaking up that pressure and then putting it back on their bowlers. 'I don't see why we can't chase it.' England's record run chase came against India in the first year of Stokes' captaincy in 2022, when they knocked off 378 at Edgbaston. Rain is forecast in Leeds on Tuesday, but Tongue said his team have not even spoken about the possibility of playing for a draw. 'We will just go for the win,' added the 27-year-old fast bowler. 'That is the clear message in the changing room. We will be as positive as we can.' India centurion KL Rahul, however, thinks England's win-or-bust approach could play into the tourists' hands. 'It's a blockbuster finish waiting tomorrow,' said the opener, who top scored for India with 137, while Rishabh Pant hit his second century of the match with a thrilling 118. 'There is definitely going to be a result. That is what England have said very openly and their style of cricket suggests as well. 'We know how they will come out and bat and it gives us a good opportunity to pick up wickets. Them taking chances will keep us in the game. 'The wicket is not as easy as the first innings. It is playing a few tricks. We will give ourselves the best chance to pick up 10 wickets and put pressure on them. '
