Higher Education Ministry, UPSI step in with RM3,000 aid for grieving families of students killed in Gerik crash
IPOH, June 9 — The Higher Education Ministry (KPT) will provide an initial aid of RM2,000 and disaster relief of RM1,000 to the families of victims involved in the tragic bus accident that claimed 15 lives at KM53, East-West Highway (JRTB) near Gerik early this morning.
Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the initial aid is to ease the burden of the families, including funeral arrangements for the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who died in the incident.
'UPSI has announced immediate assistance, including RM2,000 from KPT for each victim's family to manage funeral arrangements, while UPSI will provide RM1,000,' he said.
'Additional support, including funeral assistance, insurance coverage, zakat aid, accident relief and accommodation for families, has also been arranged,' he told a media conference at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) here today.
Also present were Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and UPSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Md Amin Md Taff.
Zambry said UPSI will coordinate all assistance efforts.
He said KPT, the Education Ministry (MoE) and the Health Ministry (MoH) were also in communication to ensure swift action could be taken to assist the victims and their families.
'At this stage, all basic needs, particularly related to the management of the remains, have been arranged, including the provision of hearses to transport the bodies to their respective destinations.
'Other forms of assistance include ensuring that affected family members in this area (HRPB) and Gerik Hospital are taken care of, including providing them with the necessary support,' he said.
He also informed that 13 bodies had arrived at HRPB's forensic department for post-mortems, while the remaining two were at Gerik Hospital.
Meanwhile, Zambry said he had contacted Transport Minister Anthony Loke regarding the possibility of launching an investigation into the incident, and also advised the public not to speculate. — Bernama

Syarikat Kenari Utara operations officer Mohd Nazri Nawi dismissed the allegations, saying they had carried out proper scrutiny and vetting processes before hiring him to replace one of the original drivers, who was still on leave. 'I don't know how this allegation surfaced or who it was who claimed that we hired a lorry driver as the replacement driver. We have never hired bus drivers at random without proper vetting. 'We admit that the replacement driver was from another bus company, but he is an experienced bus driver and has driven long distances. Not a lorry driver as alleged,' he told reporters at the Noreen Group Operations Office in Tunjong here today. Elaborating, Mohd Nazri said both the drivers involved in ferrying the UPSI students have clean records and never used any illegal substances. He added that, so far, based on the information received, the first driver, who works for his company, suffered a broken arm while the replacement driver is in a critical condition. 'I am not sure whether the first driver or the back-up driver was at the wheel when the incident happened,' he said, adding that he was informed of the accident at about 1 am. 'I then rushed to the location but could not meet them as they were undergoing treatment. I was only told that they will be referred to the Taiping Hospital,' he said. He also hopes that the public will stop speculating about the accident and let the authorities conduct the investigations, adding that they will give their full cooperation. — Bernama

Mara gives RM1,000 aid to UPSI bus crash victims
KUALA LUMPUR: The Mara Education Foundation (Yayasan Pelajaran Mara) has provided RM1,000 emergency aid to each Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student involved in this morning's bush crash. Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the aid was intended to ease the burden on the victims and their families "I handed over the aid to the families of the deceased and visited those hospitalised at Gerik Hospital." Asyraf, who represented Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, also offered prayers for the victims' and strength for their families in this difficult time. "I was moved by the victims' condition by meeting their family members at Gerik Hospital. "It was heartbreaking to learn that some had just arrived from Jerteh, only to be met with the devastating news of their loved ones' deaths." Earlier today, 15 people were killed when the bus they were in collided with a multi-purpose vehicle on Jalan Jeli-Grik near Tasik Banding, Perak. The accident involved a bus carrying UPSI students and a Perodua Alza. Thirty-three people were injured. The Civil Defence Force (APM) said the Banun Disaster Operations Control Centre received a distress call at 1.10am. APM personnel arrived at the scene at 2.11am to find the UPSI bus overturned and the Alza MPV severely damaged. Several victims were rushed to Gerik Hospital. It is understood that the bus was travelling from Jerteh at the time of the crash.

‘I couldn't switch it off': Samaritan's desperate bid to stop UPSI bus engine
KOTA BHARU, June 9 — A samaritan who arrived at the scene of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) bus crash shortly after it occurred said he attempted to turn off the bus engine, fearing it might ignite a fire, but was unsuccessful. Shahruldi Mahafiz, 52, was on his way back to Besut after dropping off his second daughter, Adriana, 21, at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Seri Iskandar, Perak, when the tragic accident unfolded. He said after stopping for a break at the Gerik R&R around 12.30am, he resumed his journey and noticed several oncoming vehicles flashing their high beams a few kilometres before the crash site — signalling an emergency ahead. 'Upon arriving, I saw the bus overturned. It was a chaotic scene — items scattered, people panicking, and victims lying motionless near the wreckage. I immediately got out to help,' he told Bernama today. 'Fearing the engine might catch fire or explode, I rushed to the front of the bus and tried to switch it off. I even asked the driver for help, but the engine wouldn't shut down,' he said. Shahruldi, who later livestreamed the incident on Facebook, said he then attempted a manual shutdown based on his previous experience assisting accident victims. 'Since the main switch failed, I crawled to reach the switch box located behind the bus exhaust, but that didn't work either. 'Despite the intense heat, smoke, and humidity, I ignored the discomfort. My only concern was to prevent further tragedy. I was frustrated that I couldn't shut off the engine, so I could only pray the situation wouldn't get worse,' he said. He described the victims' condition as heartbreaking, with some seriously injured and trapped under the bus, while blood was visible on the road from their injuries. The pitch-dark surroundings, he added, made rescue efforts even more challenging. Many victims were seriously injured, and he avoided moving them out of concern that it could worsen their condition. The crash, which occurred at KM53 of the East-West Highway near Gerik at 1.10am, claimed the lives of 15 UPSI students.
