Suicide note in English helps cops crack bizman murder
MUMBAI: A purported suicide note in English alerted the Dindoshi police to the possible murder of a Mira Road-based businessman on Sunday and helped them solve the case within three days. The message was allegedly sent by the man's girlfriend who was upset over his refusal to marry her. The duo had an argument on Sunday morning and the woman strangulated the businessman later in the day while he as was asleep, police said on Wednesday after producing her in a city court following her arrest. According to the police, the deceased, 47-year-old Mohammed Mansuri, was a resident of Mira Road and he had a business in Malad. On Sunday evening, his wife received a message from his mobile phone stating, 'I am committing suicide and my wife is responsible for it.'
Since Mansuri never texted her in English, she grew suspicious and conveyed the same to personnel from the Naya Nagar police station. The police traced the location of his mobile to a room in Shalimar Hotel in Malad and found his body, without any clothes, in the same room. The autopsy revealed that he had died due to strangulation.
The police then started searching for Mansuri's killer. They scanned the CCTV footage of the hotel and surrounding areas and found that he had checked into the hotel on Saturday with a burqa-clad woman who was carrying a blue bag. Upon checking with the hotel, they found that she had submitted the businessman's mother's Aadhaar instead of hers to evade identification.
Mansuri's relatives told the police that the body language of the woman seen in CCTV footage indicated she could be his girlfriend. While going through the call details records of Mansuri's mobile, they also found frequent calls between him and a woman named Barkat Rathod.
'We traced Rathod's location to Jaipur in Rajasthan but also found that she was in Mumbai over the weekend and left for Rajasthan by train thereafter,' assistant police inspector Om Totawar from Dindohsi police station told HT.
Based on this information, a team from the Dindoshi police station left for the northern state. They intercepted Rathod on Tuesday while she was still on the train and arrested her.
'The woman was a distant relative of Mansuri and the duo had been involved in an extra-marital relationship for nearly two years. Rathod's husband had learnt about this and left her,' said a police officer.
Rathod, who was brought to Mumbai on Wednesday and remanded in police custody for four days, told the police that he and Mansuri used to argue a lot lately over his refusal to leave his wife and marry her. She had arrived in Mumbai on Saturday to meet Mansuri and the duo had checked into the hotel in Malad the same day, she told the police. On Sunday morning, they had another argument, after which she strangled him to death and sent a message from his mobile phone to his wife, claiming he had died by suicide.
'The message helped us crack the murder case which was portrayed as a suicide,' said senior police inspector Ajay Afale. 'We are yet to ascertain the reason behind the murder.'

Maharashtra: Wife kills husband with axe 3 weeks after marriage
Sangli: Just days after the gruesome Raja Raghuvanshi murder case sent shockwaves across the country, another chilling crime involving a newlywed couple has emerged, this time from Maharashtra, where a woman, married for just three weeks, allegedly killed her husband. The woman used an axe to kill her husband while he slept following a heated argument over the latter's insistence on consummating their marriage 15 days after the wedding. The incident took place in Sangli district on the night of June 10, officials confirmed on Thursday. According to the police, the couple -- Anil Lokhande and Radhika Lokhande -- were married on May 23. The officials mentioned that it was Anil's second marriage. His first wife had died of cancer. On Tuesday night, the couple engaged in a violent altercation over consummation that reportedly continued late into the night. Radhika was exasperated by Anil's insistence, and around midnight, when he retired to bed, in a sudden act of rage, she picked up an axe and fatally struck her husband on the head, the officials said. He died instantly, officials said. Shortly after committing the murder, Radhika reportedly called her cousin and confessed to the crime. Police arrested her on Wednesday and produced her before a magistrate, who remanded her to two days' police custody. A case has been registered against her under Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to murder. Police sources indicate that ongoing family discord may have led to the crime, though further investigations are underway to determine the precise motive. This shocking incident comes close on the heels of the sensational murder of Indore-based Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya. Raja and his wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi, were married on May 11 and had left for their honeymoon on May 20. Merely three days into the trip, both went missing. The case, which initially began as a missing person report, took a sinister turn when Raja's body was discovered in a deep gorge in Meghalaya on June 2. His autopsy revealed two severe head injuries -- one at the back and another on the front -- confirming a brutal murder. Further investigation uncovered a premeditated plot allegedly orchestrated by Sonam, her lover Raj Kushwaha, and three of his friends -- Akash Rajput, Anand Kurmi, and Vishal Singh Chauhan. On June 7, Sonam surrendered in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. All five accused, including Sonam and Raj, confessed to the crime and have been remanded to eight days of police custody.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday conducted a large-scale search operation at 24 locations across Rajasthan and Gujarat in connection with a money laundering case worth ₹2,700 crore linked to the Nexa Evergreen project. 'ED has recorded an ECIR (Enforcement Case Information Report) on the basis of FIRs filed by Rajasthan Police against Nexa Evergreen. They duped investors to the tune of ₹2,700 crore by luring them with promises of high returns and land plots in Dholera city, Gujarat. Searches were conducted at 24 locations in Sikar, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Jhunjhunu, and Ahmedabad,' sources said. The company is accused of defrauding nearly 62,000 individuals, primarily by offering affordable flats and land parcels in Dholera, Gujarat. In cases where land could not be allotted, investors were promised high-interest returns. Although some received possession initially, the scheme was later exposed as fraudulent, leaving most investors without recourse. A senior official told Business Standard that the company had raised around ₹2,700 crore from investors through misleading assurances. The company's promoters, Subhash Bijarniya and Ranveer Bijarniya—both from Sikar in Rajasthan—allegedly targeted both civilians and government employees, including members of the police and armed forces. The duo marketed a scheme that promised to double investments within 14 months. Nexa Evergreen's background Nexa Evergreen Private Limited is a Gujarat-based real estate firm incorporated on 17 April 2021 and registered in Ahmedabad. The company claims to be engaged in buying, selling, and developing residential and commercial land. Separate ED action in Jaypee Group case last month Last month, the ED said it had seized ₹1.7 crore in cash and documents related to immovable assets during raids against Jaypee Infratech Ltd (JIL), Jaiprakash Associates Ltd (JAL), and associated entities in a separate money laundering investigation linked to alleged fraud involving homebuyers. The searches were carried out on 23 May at 15 premises in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Mumbai under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). "The search covered offices and premises of JAL, its related entities, and its promoter directors," the agency stated. Searches were also conducted at premises associated with key business partners of JAL, including Gaursons India Pvt Ltd, Gulshan Homz Pvt Ltd, and Mahagun Real Estate Pvt Ltd, the statement added.
