Prolonged infra issues could jeopardise future: Shafie
Published on: Tuesday, June 10, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 10, 2025 By: Azmie Lim Text Size: Shafie said remedial measures such as terminating concession contracts and absorbing more than 1,000 contract workers into the department had been done before, but the problem remains unresolved. SEMPORNA: The prolonged basic infrastructure issues in Sabah could jeopardise the State's future, including the education sector and foreign investment, said Parti Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal. He said long-standing water problems, including at higher learning institutions like Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), continue to burden students. Advertisement 'In several meetings with university students, they raised their concerns over this issue. Some are forced to buy mineral water or rely on donations just for bathing and drinking. 'This not only affects their comfort but also disrupts their focus on their studies,' he said after officiating the SPM 2024 Excellence Incentive and Appreciation Programme, here. Shafie said remedial measures such as terminating concession contracts and absorbing more than 1,000 contract workers into the department had been done before, but the problem remains unresolved. 'The State's water problem has dragged on for years, mainly due to management weaknesses, including at the Sabah Water Department. 'Basic infrastructure issues like this not only affect the people's comfort but also impact State investments,' he said. Shafie also touched on the sharp increase in cooking gas cylinder prices, which have now soared to over RM70 per unit. 'Sabah is the second largest gas producer after Sarawak. It is unfair that our own people should bear this high cost,' he said. He said he would raise the issue in the upcoming Parliament session. During the event, more than 100 top SPM 2024 students from across Semporna were celebrated. Shafie expressed pride in their achievements and said he would continue to support efforts to develop the State's education sector. He also urged all parties to work together and not sideline local leaders in advancing the sector. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? DAP's Bandar Utama rep Jamaliah Jamaluddin announces marriage to long-time partner
KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 — Bandar Utama assemblyman Jamaliah Jamaluddin today announced that she has tied the knot. The Selangor executive councillor for public health and environment said she had married her partner whose name she gave only as 'Joshua' in a private ceremony. 'With great gratitude to Allah SWT, I would like to share one happy news that is very personal to me — Alhamdulillah with His permission, my spouse and I have safely married yesterday,' the DAP state lawmaker wrote in a Facebook post this morning. Jamaliah said the wedding was held in a 'small and intimate setting' attended by immediate family members and close friends who had known the couple since their secondary school days. 'The decision was made based on discussions with family, and in respect of the family's request to focus on the wisdom of the marriage bond itself.' She added that Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari – her former 'boss' who had also 'once mentored my husband while undergoing industry training' – and Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin were among those present for the marriage ceremony. Jamaliah also apologised to those who might feel left out of the quiet ceremony. 'Humbly, I apologise if this decision creates a feeling of disregard or displeasure to any party. 'It was not an easy decision, apart from friends and family members, I know many of the members and party leaders also always pray and expect the best for me,' she posted. She said the ceremony was made with 'great care' and guided by the agreement of both families. 'InshaAllah, my partner and I hope there will be another space and time to celebrate this happiness together with friends and acquaintances in a more open and lively atmosphere.'

Ramasamy wants Penang EXCO reprimanded for unilateral decision on Indian Muslim housing discount
I CANNOT stop wondering at how the Penang state government could permit an EXCO member to make unilateral announcements without the approval or endorsement of the state executive council (EXCO). I am bewildered that Penang state Housing and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Seri S. Sundarajoo could announce a 5% housing discount for Indian Muslims under the Madani housing scheme without apparent consultation with his other EXCO colleagues. Sundarajoo justified the move on grounds of low participation among Indian Muslims in state housing. But can he furnish data to back this claim? What are the comparative participation rates of Malays, Chinese, Indians and Indian Muslims? He also stated that this discount would not affect allocations for the Malays – yet he seems to overlook the complex identity overlap where some Indian Muslims are classified as Malay/Bumiputera while others maintain their distinct ethnic identity. Has there been any study quantifying the percentage of Indian Muslims who qualify under the Bumiputera category versus those who identify separately? Jumping the gun? Without such data, it's hard to justify a policy decision that could result in dual benefits for a segment of the population, raising questions of fairness and equity. Had this proposal been tabled in an EXCO meeting, its flaws could have been debated and possibly avoided. But instead, Sundarajoo proceeded based on consultations with developers – not the state government – casting doubt on the integrity of Penang's housing policy framework. This was a poor decision made without transparency and without consideration for other equally deserving communities. The policy lacked sound rationale and undermined public confidence. In this regard, I commend Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow for stepping in to reverse the decision and broadening the discount to all eligible Malaysians. I urge Chow to go a step further – reprimand Perai state assemblyman Sundarajoo for bypassing proper procedure and acting irresponsibly on a matter of public policy. – June 9, 2025 Former DAP stalwart and Penang chief minister II Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy is chairman of the United Rights of Malaysian Party (Urimai) interim council.
