India-Pakistan Ceasefire After Operation Sindoor: US Mediation, Nuclear Tensions, and What Comes Next

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on May 10 confirmed that India had agreed to a ceasefire with Pakistan after the latter reached out. Shortly before that, US President Donald Trump stated that India and Pakistan had agreed to a 'full and immediate ceasefire' after a fourth day of strikes and counter-strikes against each other's military installations.
'The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan called the DGMO of India at 1530 hours (3.30 pm) this afternoon. It was agreed between them that both sides would cease all firing and military action on land, in the air, and at sea with effect from 1700 hours (5 pm),' Misri told media.
The Foreign Secretary, in a brief press conference announcing the ceasefire agreement, added, 'Instructions have been given on both sides to implement this understanding. The Directors General of Military Operations will speak again on May 12. Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also said both countries had agreed to a ceasefire 'with immediate effect'.
On the social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: 'After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence.'
The ceasefire announcement followed fears that both countries' nuclear arsenals might come into play, as the Pakistan military said a top military and civil body overseeing its nuclear weapons would meet. But Dar later said no such meeting was scheduled. At the same time, officials from both sides showed a willingness, for now, to take a step back following the day's exchanges, while the civilian death toll on both sides of the border mounted to 66.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, 'Over the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I have engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.'
US Vice President J.D. Vance, who just days ago claimed the conflict between India and Pakistan was 'none of our business,' has also shared President Donald Trump's announcement of a ceasefire between the two nuclear-armed countries.
'What we can do is try to encourage these folks to deescalate a little bit, but we're not going to get involved in the middle of war that's fundamentally none of our business and has nothing to do with America's ability to control it,' Vance told Fox Newson May 8.
The announcement comes after weeks of tension and back-and-forth strikes—for the past several days, India carried out major counterterror operations under 'Operation Sindoor', targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This was in response to the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, which killed 26 people and was allegedly sponsored by Pakistan.

"It is not that Rahul Gandhi doesn't understand how the electoral process works. He does very well. But his goal is not clarity, it is chaos. His repeated attempts to sow seeds of doubt and dissension in the minds of voters about our institutional processes are deliberate," Malviya's post added. In response to the allegation made by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi regarding the Maharashtra election, the Election Commission described it as "unsubstantiated allegations." "Unsubstantiated allegations raised against the Electoral Rolls of Maharashtra are an affront to the rule of law. The Election Commission brought out all these facts in its reply to the INC on 24th December 2024 itself, which is available on ECI's website. It appears that all these facts are completely being ignored while raising such issues again and again," the ECI statement read.

Bharat Mata portrait row: CPI hoists national flag, plants saplings
Thrissur , CPI, the second-largest partner in the ruling LDF in Kerala, on Saturday hoisted the national flag and planted saplings as a mark of protest against the usage of the Bharat Mata portrait at an Environment Day event in the Raj Bhavan. State Agriculture Minister and CPI leader P Prasad had boycotted the event at the Raj Bhavan on June 5 over the use of the portrait, citing that it was the one used by the RSS. The Left party had announced that it would hoist the national flag, which is the symbol of Bharat Mata, at all its branches on Saturday and would plant saplings as a mark of protest against the Raj Bhavan's action. CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam hoisted the flag and planted the sapling at the party district office in Thrissur on Saturday morning. State Revenue Minister P Rajan and senior leader and former minister V S Sunil Kumar were among those who were present during the protest event. After the event, Viswam sought to know whether the Constitution of the country or the policies of the RSS were important for Governor Vishwanath Rajendra Arlekar. "This flag is the Bharat Mata. There is no Bharat Mata other than this," he said, hoisting the national flag. Apparently criticising the Governor, he said any attempt to impose another concept of Bharat Mata is "unconstitutional" and "anti-national". Minister Prasad, who had boycotted the event, said on Friday that those in constitutional offices cannot convert government programmes into political events. A similar view was also expressed by state General Education Minister V Sivankutty, who said that the Raj Bhavan and the Governor were above politics and said that Arlekar should withdraw from the stand taken by him. As the incident triggered a row, the Governor had issued a statement saying that "Whatever be the pressure, from whichever quarters, there will be no compromise whatsoever on Bharat Mata."

YouTuber Jasbir Singh Sent To 2-Day Police Remand In Pak-Linked Espionage Case
Social media influencer Jasbir Singh, who was arrested by Punjab Police on charges of espionage, has been sent to two days of police remand by a Mohali court on Saturday. "The police had asked for 7 days remand... We asked the police through the court what they did in 3 days. Today, he has been sent to a 2-day police remand," ANI quoted Jasbir's lawyer as saying. Jasbir, who runs a YouTube channel "JaanMahal Video" with over 11 lakh subscribers, was arrested by the Punjab Police's State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) on June 4 on espionage charges. According to the Police, Jasbir is allegedly linked to a terror-backed espionage network involving Pakistani intelligence operative Shakir alias Jutt Randhawa. The YouTuber is said to have maintained close contact with Haryana-based YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who was arrested last month for spying, and Ehsan-ur-Rahim alias Danish, a Pakistani national and expelled Pakistan High Commission official, ANI quoted police as saying.
