Prime Minister is not above the law

Hamzah Zainudin. KUALA LUMPUR - Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has reminded that the Prime Minister is not above the law and should not use his position to shield himself from legal proceedings, especially in the eyes of both the people and the international community. In a statement on Friday, Hamzah stressed the importance of upholding justice, saying that dignity and accountability go hand in hand for any national leader. He criticised the move by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's legal team to file an extraordinary application to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court, including the matter of immunity in a civil lawsuit filed by former aide Muhammed Yusoff Rawther. Hamzah criticised the move by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's legal team to file an extraordinary application to refer eight legal questions to the Federal Court, including the matter of immunity in a civil lawsuit filed by former aide Muhammed Yusoff Rawther (in white).. 'Defending the honour of a leader, particularly the Prime Minister, is important because it reflects the authority of the nation. However, at the same time, the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law must be upheld 'Those in power must never abuse the justice system because doing so would erode public trust in the leadership and the country's legal institutions,' he warned. He reminded that the courts are the rightful avenue for individuals to defend themselves fairly under the law, and any failure to uphold justice could lead to perceptions of double standards. He warned that such a scenario would erode public trust and send a signal to foreign investors that the country operates without proper legal order. The Larut Member of Parliament (MP) added that such actions could have a lasting impact on Malaysia's stability and economic growth. Citing Article 8(1) of the Federal Constitution, he said: 'All individuals are equal before the law and entitled to equal protection under it. If this right is denied, the people will rebel and the system will collapse. 'The position of Prime Minister does not provide immunity from the law. In this case, he must defend his personal honour and the integrity of the Prime Minister's institution, not seek immunity from the court. 'The role of Prime Minister is a trust given by Allah SWT, for which one will be held accountable not only in this world, but also in the hereafter,' he said. More Like This

Kota Madani project expected to be completed by end-2027, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Kota Madani, slated for completion by 2027, aims to provide integrated and centralised basic facilities to support community welfare, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today. During the presentation session, Anwar said that among the planned developments included vertical schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. He added that financial institutions, health clinics, fire stations, police stations and mosques would also be built near the residential areas. "The first phase involves the construction of around 3,000 residential units and a vertical school, expected to be completed and fully operational by the end of 2027. "The design of the mosque and school will feature local cultural elements, in line with efforts to preserve architecture and heritage. "I hope the plans proceed smoothly and can be implemented effectively for the benefit of the community," he said through an entry on X, today. Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, through a separate post on X said that the Kota Madani project, covering 41.28 hectares, would provide 10,000 residential units to accommodate over 30,000 residents. The development will adopt a high-density vertical design. She said the city would integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technology, advanced digital infrastructure, and green mobility systems, forming the foundation for a low-carbon, sustainable and safe urban environment. "This is a long-term strategic investment to shape Putrajaya as a model city that reflects Madani values and aligns with the vision of Bandar Chase," she said. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 26.

Heed King's call to build a safe, inclusive, and united Malaysia, says Lam Thye

PETALING JAYA: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's call for unity is a powerful reminder that Malaysians are stronger and better when standing together as one people, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said unity is the cornerstone of the nation's harmony, peace, progress and prosperity. 'It transcends political affiliations, religious beliefs and ethnic backgrounds. 'As Malaysians, we must never take for granted the harmony that has allowed us to thrive as a multiracial, multicultural society. 'His Majesty's call is a powerful reminder that despite our differences, we are stronger and better when we stand together as one people, united in our shared hopes and common destiny,' Lee said in a statement on Tuesday (June 3). He said the responsibility of fostering unity lies with every segment of society, but especially with those in leadership. 'Inclusive policies that protect the rights and dignity of all citizens, regardless of race, religion, or background must continue being implemented. 'National policies should be rooted in fairness and aimed at bridging gaps,' he said. Politicians, Lee said, also carry a moral obligation to promote messages of inclusion, tolerance and mutual respect. 'They must rise above narrow interests and avoid rhetoric that incites division or undermines our national cohesion. 'Instead, they should work together, across party lines, to strengthen the unity that forms the bedrock of our nation's stability,' he added. He said civil society also has a crucial role to play in building bridges between communities, advocating for justice, and encouraging understanding through dialogue and engagement. 'Let us all respond to His Majesty's call by rejecting divisiveness, embracing respect and compassion, and working hand-in-hand to build a Malaysia that is safe, inclusive, and united,' he said. In a royal address at the investiture ceremony for 2025 in conjunction with His Majesty's official birthday celebration at Istana Negara, the King reminded leaders not to politicise sensitive issues that could fuel discord within the society and threaten the nation's stability. Sultan Ibrahim said the existence of more political parties or factions within parties could lead to widening rifts among the people, resulting in escalating enmity among them. 'Use your wisdom before making any decisions. There is no greater gift to me than a united rakyat. 'I have mentioned before that there is a 'virus' that will strike our nation. 'Now, this virus has begun to spread and cannot be cured. I often speak of this so that we do not easily forget,' His Majesty said. His Majesty also called on all Malaysians to keep fostering unity as a gift to him.
