India tell Reddy to be ready for bigger bowling workload in England
India's bowling attack will need regular contributions from all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy on the tour of England with Mohammed Shami absent due to fitness concerns and Jasprit Bumrah's workload to be managed, bowling coach Morne Morkel said.
Team management have said pace spearhead Bumrah is likely to play only three of the five tests in the series, which begins on June 20 in Leeds, with seam-bowling all-rounders Reddy and Shardul Thakur on standby to fill any gaps.
Morkel said he had challenged Reddy to bowl a bit more.
"He's a guy that can bowl that magical ball, so for him it's about creating that consistency, it's something we want to work on, it's important for his game as well," he said after India's practice session in Beckenham on Wednesday.
"I want to see the ball more in his hands, we all know what he can do with the bat.
"For a team, if we can have the bowling options especially in these conditions, I think he'll be exciting and can complement this bowling attack."
Reddy has five wickets from five tests - all in Australia.
Bumrah, whenever fit, and Mohammed Siraj are the only automatic picks in the pace attack, while India can also turn to seamers Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna.
Against an England side renowned for their ultra-aggressive batting, India bowlers will have to make an immediate impact and Morkel was pleased with their level of preparedness.
"England, the brand of cricket they play, we need to be on top of our game," the former South Africa quick said.
"We can't afford (time) to find our feet in this series. That's one of the things that has impressed me so much in the two days, the few sessions we've had.
"The guys have stepped up by themselves, they've taken the ownership and responsibility, they've realised it's going to be a tough tour." REUTERS

The Michael Johnson-fronted track series lured in top talent with super-sized prize money but saw poor attendance at its kick-off meeting in Kingston, Jamaica, and later cut its third meet in Philadelphia from three to two days. "The decision to conclude the inaugural Grand Slam Track season is not taken lightly, but one rooted in a belief that we have successfully achieved the objectives we set out to in this pilot season," Johnson said in a statement. "As we've said all along, we were going to have learnings, make adjustments, and continue to improve. Sometimes we have to make moves that aren't comfortable, but what's most important is the future and sustainability of the league. "The global economic landscape has shifted dramatically in the past year, and this business decision has been made to ensure our long-term stability ..." The economics of the deal with Drake Stadium in Los Angeles was the motivating factor in cancelling what was intended to be the final meet of the year, Grand Slam Track sources told Reuters. Organisers have offered full refunds to any fans who had bought tickets to the June 28-29 Los Angeles meeting and Johnson said the series would return in 2026. "Our attention is now on 2026, with our eyes set on continuing to deliver the best-in-class storytelling, content, and competition," the four-times Olympic champion added. "We are committed to calling Los Angeles home, and look forward to hosting a Slam in LA as part of the 2026 season." Grand Slam was announced ahead of the 2024 Paris Games amid mounting concerns over athlete pay, as World Athletics for the first time paid $50,000 to gold medal winners in a controversial move that bucked 128 years of Olympic tradition. With a whopping $12.6 million in total prize money across what was set to be four meets, Johnson's start-up caught the attention of track's established circuits, as the long-time standard-bearer Diamond League added more to its prize pot. Sprinters Kenny Bednarek and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden were awarded the Grand Slam Track Racers of the Year, the statement added. Jefferson-Wooden, who like Bednarek was undefeated over the three meets, said she had no regrets about taking part. Spaun could not escape the talk about how punishing a setup Oakmont Country Club is, and while that left him plenty nervous, the unheralded American felt the threat of danger at every turn helped power him to the first-round U.S. Open lead on Thursday. Spaun, three years removed from his lone win on the PGA Tour, did not just outplay the game's biggest stars in the opening round of the year's third major but carded only the eighth bogey-free round in a U.S. Open at Oakmont. After signing off for a four-under-par 68 that left him with a one-shot lead over South African Thriston Lawrence, Spaun admitted to feeling uneasy going into only his second U.S. Open. "I was actually pretty nervous. But I actually tried to harness that, the nerves, the anxiety, because it kind of heightens my focus, makes me swing better," said Spaun. "I kind of get more in the zone, whereas if I don't have any worry or if I'm not in it mentally, it's kind of just a lazy round or whatever out there." Despite being nervous, Spaun was a picture of calm as he made his way around a course that has a reputation for being kick-your-teeth-in tough given the dense rough that lines the skinny fairways which lead to super-slick greens. Spaun, who began his day on the back nine, left his approach at the par-four 10th in thick rough beside the green but calmly chipped in from 20 feet away and never looked back. "It was a nice little wake-up call at 7:10 in the morning or whatever it was," said Spaun, who added three more birdies before the turn and then parred each hole on his inward nine. "It was a nice way to start the day, and I obviously kind of rode that momentum throughout the day." Spaun, who missed the cut at the 2021 U.S. Open and earned a career-best major finish at the 2022 Masters where he earned a share of 23rd place, is hoping his near-misses on the PGA Tour this year have made him a more confident player. The 34-year-old American finished runner-up to world number two Rory McIlroy at The Players Championship in March two weeks after earning a share of second place at PGA National Resort. "To go head-to-head with Rory on Sunday, and then the playoff was great for my confidence," said Spaun. "Unfortunately, I didn't win, but it was great for me to kind of lean back on that experience and know that I can perform on the biggest of stages and handle it with the pressure.
