Asean ministers convene in Langkawi for education roundtables on June 17

LANGKAWI: Asean education policymakers are set to gather here, at the Jewel of Kedah, starting Tuesday (June 17) for the Asean Ministers of Education and Higher Education Roundtables (#EduRoundtables2025).
Throughout the three-day event, Ministers of Education and Higher Education, along with senior officials from Asean member states and Timor-Leste, are expected to deliberate on a new framework that will guide the region's educational direction moving forward.
In addition to the closed-door Asean Ministers of Education Roundtable session on June 19, Malaysia's Education Ministry will host the Asean Forum on Education on Wednesday with the same theme, "Accelerating Innovative Strategies: Mitigating OOSCY Challenges."
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek is scheduled to deliver her remarks on Thursday.
Besides that, a Joint Statement entitled "Langkawi Joint Statement on Out-of-School Children and Youth (OOSCY): Accelerating Innovative Strategies: Mitigating OOSCY Challenges" is envisioned as a key document that reaffirms the commitment of Asean Member States to accelerate efforts in reducing the number of OOSCY, particularly as the grouping approaches the 10-year milestone of the Asean Declaration on Strengthening OOSCY.
The Statement aims to address critical challenges that have hindered progress towards inclusive education and to provide a guiding framework for advancing collective action through innovative and adaptive strategies.
For the higher education segment, key items on the agenda include the expected endorsement of the Asean Leaders' Declaration on Higher Education and the Asean Global Exchange for Mobility and Scholarship (Asean GEMS).
Among other important developments are the anticipated adoption of the Roadmap and Workplan on Common Space in Southeast Asian Higher Education, as well as the adoption of the Terms of Reference (TOR) of the Steering Committee on Common Space in Southeast Asian Higher Education.
Delegates, including ministers, will also take time to enjoy Langkawi's natural beauty with a visit to the scenic Unesco Global Geopark.
Malaysia, which holds the Asean Chairmanship for 2025 under the theme "Inclusivity and Sustainability," recently hosted the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits from May 23 to 26 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC).
This marks the fifth time Malaysia has assumed the Asean chairmanship, having previously held the role in 1977, 1997, 2005, and 2015. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Protectionism and geopolitical tensions must not be allowed to threaten the transition to green technologies and energy security, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said here on Monday. Considering the long-term nature of these challenges, efforts to provide security against such disruptions must be a top priority to ensure the stability of the global economy and the continuation of human growth and development, Anwar said in his keynote address at the Energy Asia 2025 conference. "Geopolitical tensions, retaliatory tariffs, and disrupted supply chains have fueled uncertainty; eroding the predictability, reliability and stability that global trade and economic systems once offered," he said. "This fragility is perhaps most evident in the energy and climate domain. Rather than fostering collaboration, we are witnessing polarizing policy shifts driven by strategic competition, even as energy security remains out of reach for many," he said. As part of efforts to build resilience against such disruptions, Anwar suggested a clear and coherent financial architecture that inspires investor confidence and mobilizes greater capital flows into renewable energy projects across Southeast Asia, as well as upgrading electricity grids, which will pave the way for an accelerated adoption of green technologies. "This is critical, given that in 2023, Southeast Asia attracted only 2 percent of global clean energy spending -- a stark contrast for a region endowed with immense potential in renewable energy: wind in Vietnam, hydropower in Laos, solar in Malaysia and geothermal energy in Indonesia," he said. "At the recent ASEAN Summit, we took a significant step forward by accelerating the ASEAN Power Grid (APG) initiative through an enhanced memorandum of agreement and the establishment of a dedicated APG financing facility network. This will enhance cross-border funding flows and bring us closer to a truly integrated regional energy market," he explained. Anwar also noted the progress that Malaysia has made as chair of ASEAN in putting dialogue and multilateralism first and building strong ties with major energy exporters in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), noting the successful inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China summit last month. "Here in Asia, we hold fast to the belief that diplomacy prevails over autocracy, and healthy competition can coexist with mutually-beneficial outcomes," he added. The conference gathers representatives from 38 industries across more than 60 countries and regions under the theme "Delivering Asia's Energy Transition," bringing together policymakers, industry leaders and energy professionals to align strategies and pragmatic solutions that meet the unique challenges and opportunities of developing and emerging economies.

Pupils fight in Terengganu: Fadhlina orders probe, denies link to a student's mother
PUTRAJAYA: Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek today strongly condemned the actions of some quarters who politicised the recent fight involving two pupils at a school in Terengganu. She also denied baseless allegations linking the mother of one of the students involved being related to her. "The slander linking one of the mothers of the students involved with me is irresponsible and malicious. "I have never known the individual," she said in a statement here today. Fadhlina said the Education Ministry (MOE), through the Terengganu State Education Department, had taken action on this case in accordance with the Bullying and Misconduct Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) currently in force. As a follow-up step, she also instructed the ministry's Integrity Unit to conduct further investigations into the incident. "I am closely following the development of this issue and want it to be resolved immediately. "The MOE does not compromise with bullying and other misconduct. Strict action must be taken against anyone who is guilty," she said. Fadhlina also stressed the ministry's commitment to ensuring that all educational institutions remain a safe environment for the well-being of students, teachers and all school staff. — BERNAMA
