Whitnell sinks two hole-in-ones in second round of SA Open
Feb 28 (Reuters) - Englishman Dale Whitnell may well toast his good fortune with a few expensive rounds in the clubhouse after making not one but two holes-in-one at the DP World Tour's South African Open at the Durban Country Club on Friday.
Whitnell had never made a hole-in-one in tournament play, but aced the second and the 12th in his second round, both par threes, in a rollercoaster 63 that leaves him on nine under-par for the tournament, five shots behind the clubhouse leader Shaun Norris (64) from South Africa.
Whitnell is the second player in tour history to make multiple holes-in-one in the same round after Andrew Dodt at the Nordea Masters in 2013.
"I birdied the first and then hit a flush seven iron on the second and didn't realise that it had gone in until down the bottom (at the green) they cheered, so that was lovely," Whitnell said.
"I was five under through three (holes) which I have never done before and then managed to get another hole in one at the 12th. It was bizarre.
"I had everything today. An air shot, two bogeys, a double bogey, three eagles and I come out nine under par, so I can't complain."
South Africa's Dylan Naidoo carded a superb 61 that included 10 birdies and an eagle, and is in second place, one shot behind Norris.

McIlroy first to qualify for Team Europe at Ryder Cup
June 16 (Reuters) - Rory McIlroy became the first player to qualify for Europe for the 2025 Ryder Cup, the team announced on Monday, with the Masters champion set to make his eighth consecutive appearance in the biennial event. McIlroy sealed his spot through the European Points List, a qualification pathway based on performances in DP World Tour and co-sanctioned events, as the Northern Irishman has enjoyed four victories so far since last August. The 35-year-old completed a long-sought career Grand Slam at Augusta National in April, on top of victories at the Dubai DP World Tour Championship in November, the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and The Players Championship. A top-20 finish at the U.S. Open over the weekend was enough to mathematically guarantee his place on the team. The 2025 Ryder Cup will be held at Bethpage Black in New York from September 26–28, with European captain Luke Donald set to round out his 12-man squad later this year through six automatic qualifiers and six captain's picks. "It's always a huge honour to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup, so it means a great deal to have qualified for my eighth in a row and to be part of Luke's team again at Bethpage," McIlroy said. "Winning a Ryder Cup away from home is one of the biggest challenges there is in golf. We know it is going to be tough in New York, but we are all looking forward to that challenge in September and the opportunity to potentially do something special." McIlroy has been a Ryder Cup mainstay since his debut in 2010, helping Europe to five victories in seven appearances.

Man Utd's true feelings on Bryan Mbeumo U-turn as Spurs attempt to hijack deal
Bryan Mbeumo is being chased by both Manchester United and Tottenham, with Spurs looking to take advantage of their recent appointment of Thomas Frank as their new manager Manchester United are remaining relaxed over their move for Bryan Mbeumo with Tottenham still attempting to hijack the deal. Mbeumo grabbed the attention of top Premier League clubs with a stunning season for Brentford. After Ivan Toney's move to the Saudi Pro League, Mbeumo became the Bees' main man. He duly stepped into that role, scoring 20 league goals to help Thomas Frank's side to finish 10th in the top-flight. He has one year to run on his contract, with a club-held option for another 12 months. The London side are likely watching with relish as an auction over Mbeumo emerges between United and Spurs. Both sides are keen to add to their attacking options, with Tottenham also hoping to use the fact that Frank is now their manager to their advantage. United saw a £55million offer rejected before Spurs moved for Frank. And now the Dane is in place across the capital, Mbeumo is more open to joining his boss at the Europa League champions. If Mbeumo did snub a move to Old Trafford to join Spurs, it would be a major blow to United's summer plans. They have already missed out on signing Liam Delap, with the Englishman opting to join Chelsea instead. Despite the threat of Mbeumo also snubbing them, BBC Sport claim that United are 'not concerned' that their move for the attacker will fall through. Mbeumo spoke out on the speculation around his future ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday. While he wished Frank well, United are not reading anything into his interview. Spurs have held initial discussions over a move, but Mbeumo's future is currently in something of a holding pattern. He was quizzed on the speculation on Sunday, but opted to largely avoid making any definitive statement. "It (transfer speculation) is a bit new for me I would say! I think it can be the life of a footballer and you need to accept it," Mbeumo told Sky Sports. "It's been my best season so far in the Premier League. And even collectively, I think we did play very good games. I think we've been unlucky to chase the Europe spot, but I think it's been a fantastic season. "He's [Frank] done so much for me. He literally trusted me from the start. I think he developed the team so well. He developed me as a human and a player as well. So I can only wish him all the best, and I'm sure he's going to do well. "I think he knows everything. He's really smart. He knows where he wants to bring the team, how he wants to play. I think he's been fantastic for Brentford. I think he's going to have some time to adapt, obviously. "[ Champions League ] games, more expectations, as you said, but I'm sure he's going to do well. He knows how to talk to people. He knows how to build a group. And that's why we've been playing so well."
