Utkal Sanskrutika Samaj (USS), a socio-cultural organisation for the Odia community, elected its new governing body for 2025-26, during the annual general body meeting held on Sunday.
J.K. Nayak was elected president, Somnath Sahub and Karunakar Padhi, vice presidents, Bimal Kumar Mahanta, secretary, Seema Mohanty, cultural secretary, and Maheswar Behera will serve as treasurer.

BJD slams BJP for failing to ensure women's safety
Jajpur: The Biju Janata Dal on Friday accused the BJP of 'betraying' women by making false promises before the elections in 2024. The BJD held its public meeting 'Mahila Jana Jagaran' at Jajpur under the leadership of party's senior leader Pramila Mallik. She and party vice president Debi Prasad Mishra accused the BJP government of 'betraying' women. 'The BJP had promised to give Rs 50,000 to each woman in two years. However, now they are giving Rs 10,000 in two instalments in a year. What business a woman will do with capital of Rs 5,000', asked Mishra. Mallik alleged that the BJP has betrayed women because a beneficiary of Subhadra Yojana gets Rs 27 per day. 'How can Rs 27 a day help the women,' she asked and called it a 'complete betrayal' of women by the BJP after getting their votes. The BJD leaders alleged that women and girls are not safe in Odisha as there have been reports of sexual assaults on them. 'We demand re-introduction of Mahila and Sishu Desk in all police stations which helped the victims of sexual abuse in the State,' Mallik said, adding that a seven-point proposal was unanimously adopted by the women at the meeting. The BJD leaders also alleged that the State's BJP government has destroyed the economic independence of 70 lakh women in the State. Besides, the State government has also 'failed' to control the prices of essential goods, provide systematic 'darshan' in temples, maintain Odia pride and purchase paddy from farmers. The BJD meeting passed a political resolution on implementation of the 33 per cent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the 2029 polls according to the Nari Shakti Vandhan Act passed by Parliament.

Govt marks first anniversary with Vikas Mela
Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday inaugurated the state-level Vikas Mela 2025 at IDCO Exhibition Ground, marking the completion of his govt's first year in office. A special food festival highlighting Odia cuisine is being organised with 40 stalls managed by Subhadra Shakti women's groups. "We successfully transformed our promises into reality within a year," Majhi said during the inauguration. "Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guidance, we achieved significant milestones across various sectors," he added. Majhi highlighted key achievements, including the implementation of the farmer welfare schemes, which increased annual farm household income by Rs 30,000, and the steps to create employment opportunities for 12.90 lakh youngsters through the Utkarsh Odisha 2025 initiative, which attracted investment intents of close to Rs 17 lakh crore. "Other notable accomplishments include the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat healthcare scheme, raising the govt recruitment age limit to 42 years and reserving 11.25% of seats in higher education for SEBC category students. The govt also provided over 27,000 govt jobs during this period," he said. "We launched a decisive war against corruption," Majhi emphasised, noting that strict action was taken against corrupt officials at all levels. Speaking separately at an intellectuals' meet, Majhi highlighted his govt's achievements during its first year in office, emphasising the administration's commitment to public feedback and cultural preservation. He stressed that public opinion remains central to the govt's decision-making process. The administration announced ambitious plans to install statues of 21 prominent personalities across the state. Additionally, the govt will develop memorial museums, lecture centres and children's parks at the birthplaces of these historical figures. "We aim to transform 100-150 villages associated with these personalities into model villages," Majhi added.

IGNOU to offer courses in Odia
Bhubaneswar: Odisha's Higher Education department and Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to offer a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certificate programmes in Odia language. According to the agreement, IGNOU will now provide courses such as Bachelor's and Master's degrees, postgraduate diplomas, diplomas, certificates and specialised programmes — including travel and tourism management, BBA, MBA and other professional courses — in Odia language across the State. Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj attended the signing ceremony as the chief guest on Monday. 'Through this MoU, our students can now pursue higher education in Odia,' Suraj said. The minister said offering programmes in mother tongue removes barriers. 'Language or medium should no longer be a hindrance in access to higher education,' he said, adding that this initiative reinforces the National Education Policy's focus on providing education in regional languages. The MoU is expected to foster students' creativity, reduce dropout rates and boost the State's gross enrolment ratio in higher education, Suraj added. Higher Education Secretary Arvind Agarwal, department Special Secretary Ramakant Nayak, IGNOU Vice Chancellor Uma Kanjilal and Registrar Alok Chaubey were present at the event.
