While Ohio State football has torn it up on the recruiting trail over the last few years, the offensive line continues to be a sore spot for many Buckeye fans. Whether it's because of the recruiting pitch, emphasis put on skill positions, or a lack of emphasis with NIL money, Ohio State just hasn't been able to land some of the premier talent on the offensive line coming out of high school.
That trend continued on Thursday when four-star offensive tackle Drew Evers chose SMU over Ohio State in a bit of a late surprise. Many experts and analysts leading up to Evers commitment thought the recruiting battle would boil down to Ohio State or Texas A&M, but SMU became a player late in the game and was eventually able to land his services.
Out of Flower Mound, Texas, Evers was ranked as the No. 14 interior offensive lineman and 208th player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He was a priority target for the OSU coaches, but now that he's off the board, Ohio State will continue to look elsewhere, including landing another offensive lineman on Thursday.
We'll continue to keep an eye on what Ohio State continues to do on the recruiting trail as it looks to put the finishing touches on its 2026 class. It's looking to be another very good class, but where it finishes will all depend on plugging some of those holes of need still out there.

Behind the Aggies and Buckeyes are Florida State and Washington who have potential to land the recruit. In his announcement post on X, he also grouped Texas into the mix, though the Longhorns don't seem to have solid traction with the offensive tackle. Crystal Ball® Predictions are suggesting that Texas A&M has a 100 percent chance to reel in the offensive lineman. Elko currently has four-star interior offensive lineman Samuel Roseborough committed, meaning Thomas would have more room to work with within the position. Ohio State and Washington both have two tackles on their class of 2026 roster. Advertisement Florida State, though, not only has a clean slate in the position like Texas A&M but also a family connection. According to Texas A&M Aggies on SI, Thomas' father, Eric, played for the Seminole's offensive line. Even though Florida State isn't currently projected to be a top two team in the rising senior's mind, things can flip at any moment right down to the last second. Jayce Johnson has already received 29 offers in his inbox. The four-star recruit is a Valdosta, Ga. native that's ranked No. 32 overall from his class. He's also the second highest rated quarterback and fourth most rated recruit from Georgia. With a slew of schools to choose from (and likely more coming in the future) and no deadline pressuring Johnson, an Aug. 3 announcement date for his commitment may seem a bit premature. Regardless of which team is announced on that Sunday, it will be necessary to try and buckle Johnson in as coaches continue to apply pressure. 247Sports' Cooper Petagna wrote in Johnson's scouting report: "Imposing frame for a prospect who is still 15 years of age. Physically advanced for his age . . . Displays above average athleticism avoiding and escaping pressure in the pocket . . . adequate mobility as a runner. Flashes excellent arm strength with a tight, abbreviated motion, showing the ability to get the ball out quickly. Flashes some touch on his deep ball but will need to continue to learn how to play with touch and change velocity . . . Shows a natural gamer demeanor, along with the ability to play within the structure of the offense . . . Still needs some technical and athletic development, but one of the most physically talented QB prospects in the class at this early stage." Being in the top five consideration now, though, is always a good feeling. After his decision, it'll be likely that the remaining four schools have a higher chance to flip Johnson's decision later on. Texas A&M is in that position one way or another. At the time, it's very uncertain if the rising junior is leaning one way or another. The class of 2026 student-athlete is No. 208 overall and listed as the No. 14 interior offensive lineman despite being recruited as a tackle. He's also ranked No. 27 out of Texas. "214 . . . I'm staying home. Let's work #PonyUp," he wrote, according to On3's Hayes Fawcett. Another offensive tackle, Aaron Thomas, also veered away from the Aggies and decided that Ohio State would be his NCAA home. Thomas is a three-star recruit from Phoenix, Ariz. and is ranked No. 439 overall. He's also the No. 36 overall tackle and No. 5 athlete from his state. Advertisement Greg Biggins wrote in his scouting report: "He's a fluid mover, a natural athlete and looks to have all the physical traits to play offensive tackle at the college level. He's a reactionary athlete with good feet and balance. He's still raw in some areas, plays high at times and doesn't always use his length but we like the natural aggressiveness and finishing ability he flashes." Thomas was originally favored unanimously to choose the Aggies, but the Buckeyes were always their biggest competition. At some point, Florida State was a top consideration as well given his father was an offensive lineman for the Seminoles. The two recruits opting to take their talents elsewhere isn't heartbreaking for Texas A&M, though. After landing Krempin and Morcho, Elko's in a decent spot going further as recruits roll out their commitments.
