Man charged in deadly crash that killed Endicott police officer to be arraigned
The man accused in a deadly crash that killed an Endicott police officer will be arraigned on Tuesday.
Prosecutors say Keoma Duarte was so drunk the night before Thanksgiving that officers could smell the alcohol on him as they worked to free him from his crumpled Tesla on Interstate 95 near Newbury.
Duarte's Tesla had slammed head-on into a car that Endicott College Police Sgt. Jeremy Cole was driving, killing the 49-year-old husband and father of four as he drove home from work.
Duarte, 40, was arraigned on vehicular homicide and manslaughter charges from his hospital bed in December. He spoke only once, acknowledging he could hear the judge.
Jeremy Cole was a police sergeant at Endicott College. News of his death shook the close-knit community of students and staff. Many turned out Monday to light candles and write messages of love and support to his family.
New Hampshire State Police said Duarte was spotted entering the parking lot of the NH Liquor & Wine Outlet along the northbound side of I-95 before he got on the highway in the wrong direction. The outlet was closed at the time.
Prosecutors also said that Duarte had a blood alcohol level of 0.19 at the time of the crash. That's more than double the legal limit of 0.08.
In addition to vehicular homicide and manslaughter charges, Duarte faces additional civil infractions for wrong-way driving and speeding.

Canadian teen arrested in Vermont trying to drive dad to airport
DERBY, Vt. (ABC22/FOX44) – U.S. Border Patrol arrested a father and son Thursday after they tried to use a historic library as a cover to cross into the country. Reason Phung, 18, admitted to dropping his father Van Hoa Phung, 49, off at the Haskell Free Library in Derby Line, Vermont. The library, which was built exactly on the Canada-U.S. border in 1904, has tightened restrictions on non-American visitors this year after pressure from the Trump administration. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol cited a rise in illicit activity as justification for the changes. Both Phungs are Canadian citizens. According to court records, border patrol agents saw Van Hoa Phung walking south wearing a red shirt and shorts and crossing the border near the library at around 2:35 p.m. on June 5. He was then picked up in a car by his son, who had legally crossed the border on his own earlier. The two men were then taken into custody. Both the younger and the elder Phung pleaded guilty in court on Friday, and received sentences of time served for making false statements and illegally entering the U.S., respectively. Driver killed in New Hampshire crash, state police say
A driver has died in a single-vehicle crash in Salisbury, state police said Monday. The identity of the driver is being withheld pending next of kin notification, state police said in a statement shortly before 6 p.m. Monday. Hours earlier, at 3:30 a.m. Monday, state police dispatch received a report of a single-vehicle crash on North Road, state police said in a statement. The caller reported that a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck had crashed into a tree and the driver was unconscious. When emergency crews arrived, they found the driver dead at the scene, state police said. Troopers and members of the Salisbury Fire Department and the Penacook Rescue Squad responded.
