THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Protocols for responding to emergencies on busy North Sea shipping routes off the Dutch coast must be urgently improved, an independent Dutch safety watchdog said Thursday in a report into a deadly blaze on a cargo ship .
The warning by the Dutch Safety Board came in its report about emergency services' response to a fierce fire that broke out on the night of July 25, 2023, on the Fremantle Highway freighter that was carrying nearly 3,000 automobiles, including nearly 500 electric vehicles, from Germany to Singapore.

JUNEAU, Alaska — A salvage team is expected to arrive early next week at the scene of a cargo ship that was carrying about 3,000 vehicles to Mexico when it caught fire in waters off Alaska's Aleutian island chain. A tug carrying salvage specialists and special equipment is expected to arrive at the location of the Morning Midas around Monday, the ship's management company, London-based Zodiac Maritime, said Thursday. The crew will assess the ship's condition, and a separate tug with firefighting and ocean towage capabilities is being arranged, the company said in its statement. In the meantime, officials are using the ship's onboard satellite-connected systems to monitor it. The vessel remained afloat as of Thursday morning, and images gathered by the U.S. Coast Guard showed it was still 'alight with smoke emanating' from it, the statement said. The Coast Guard has said it received a distress alert around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday about a fire aboard the Morning Midas, which was roughly 300 miles southwest of Adak Island. The ship was carrying about 70 fully electric and about 680 hybrid vehicles, the Coast Guard said, noting that the information was preliminary. Adak is about 1,200 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. All 22 Morning Midas crew members were uninjured. They were evacuated onto a lifeboat and a nearby merchant vessel rescued them. They remained onboard the rescue vessel Thursday, according to Zodiac Maritime. The 600-foot Morning Midas was built in 2006 and sails under a Liberian flag. The car and truck carrier left Yantai, China, on May 26, according to the industry site It was headed to a major Pacific port in Mexico. Max Verstappen facing ban from F1 race that could reunite Ricciardo and Piastri
With Max Verstappen just one penalty point away from being forced to serve a ban, Daniel Ricciardo has been floated as a shock potential replacement for Red Bull. Verstappen copped three penalty points for deliberately colliding with George Russell in the Spanish Grand Prix, which also saw him hit with a 10-second penalty and relegated from fifth to 10th. The Dutch driver now has 11 penalty points over a rolling 12-month period, and if he reaches 12 he'll cop an automatic race ban. Crucially, the two penalty points he received at the Austrian Grand Prix last year will expire at the end of June, which will drop his tally down to nine ahead of the British GP in July. If he can avoid any penalties at the Canadian and Austrian Grands Prix this month, he'll manage to dodge a ban. But with the defending world champion just one point from missing a race, Red Bull bosses will be weighing up who gets a drive if Verstappen is rubbed out. Isack Hadjar has impressed for Red Bull's junior team 'Racing Bulls' this season, and would seemingly be the first cab off the rank to replace Verstappen. New Zealander Liam Lawson is also in the team stable with Racing Bulls, but had a disastrous two-race stint with Red Bull at the start of the season. Ayumu Iwasa and Arvid Lindblad are both in the Red Bull young drivers' pool, but Christian Horner and the team hierarchy might be keen for someone with a bit more experience. Bringing Riccardo back, even for a one-off race, would be a decision welcomed by plenty of fans, but the 35-year-old has distanced himself from motorsport since losing his Racing Bulls seat last year and would probably require some tempting back."
