Ghantasala was not just a singer, butalso a freedom fighter: Andhra MLA Mandali
VIJAYAWADA: Avanigadda MLA Mandali Buddha Prasad on Monday said legendary playback singer Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao was not only a musical genius but also a dedicated freedom fighter who actively participated in the Quit India Movement.
He was speaking after flagging off a heritage walk in Ghantasala village to commemorate the 58th anniversary of Ghantasala's historic musical concert in his native village on April 21, 1967.
The walk, held under the auspices of NRI Gorrepati Ranganatha Babu, saw participation from local dignitaries, students of UVR Gorrepati School and ZP High School, and villagers.
The event began with floral tributes at the statue of Ghantasala Venkateswara Rao, followed by special prayers at the statue of Gautama Buddha. The MLA visited the Veerabrahmendra Swamy Temple, where Ghantasala once performed, and the house of Vemulapalli Veerasekhar, where the singer's family had once stayed.
Recalling Ghantasala's contributions to the freedom movement, Buddha Prasad said the maestro was arrested during the Quit India Movement in 1942 and imprisoned in Gudivada for a year, where he shared a cell with freedom fighter Potti Sriramulu. He later took part in Sriramulu's funeral procession, singing patriotic songs in his memory.
He also remembered how the Challapalli Rani recognised Ghantasala's talent early on and gifted him a ring, which he later sold to fund his music training in Vizianagaram. The program was attended by former ZP Vice Chairman Gorrepati Venkata Ramakrishna and others.

Housefull 2 was the biggest Bollywood opener, Housefull 3 was the 6th biggest and Housefull 4 was the 3rd biggest. The franchise's signature mix of comedy, chaos, and chartbuster music continues to resonate with the Kiwis. Beyond New Zealand, the film is showing promising traction in other international markets. In Australia, advance bookings for the opening day have reached an impressive USD 67,000. The UAE, another key territory for Bollywood releases, is also witnessing solid momentum, with Vox Cinemas projected to sell approximately 10,000 tickets across its chain for the opening day. Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, advance bookings are trending toward a healthy 15,000 euros. These figures collectively point to a strong international opening for Housefull 5, with early estimates projecting a weekend in the range of USD 3.5 to 3.75 million. Akshay Kumar's Good Newwz may likely remain on top of this list because it had much better bookings than the upcoming release in a big traditional market like US-Canada. Coming to the movie's India bookings, Housefull 5 has sold a little over 80,000 tickets in the top national chains as at 10pm on the day before release and it should end in the vicinity of 90,000 tickets if the current trend holds up for the next couple of hours.

Tribute to city's theatre legend Qadir Ali Baig
HYDERABAD Theatre fraternity and Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation paid a tribute to Hyderabad's legendary thespian Qadir Ali Baig with a touching play 'Sunset-Sunrise' that was staged at Radisson Blu Plaza on Tuesday night. The play brought centre stage the pathos of ageing parents living across India, whose children have settled abroad in quest of a successful life. Written by Noor Baig, the play was the last one produced by Begum Razia Baig. Qadir Ali Baig's son Mohammad Ali Baig, who directed the play, played the role of successful NRI Kunal living in the US, while Rashmi Seth and Vijay Prasad played the roles of his parents. Qadir Ali Baig was a legendary figure on stage during the 1970s and 80s who produced several spectacular plays such as 'Quli Qutub Shah', 'Mehboob-e-Deccan', and 'Kohinoor ka Lootera'. His modern plays 'Sakharam Binder', 'Aadhey Adhure', 'Lehron ke Rajhans' and several others were trendsetting. Governor Jishnu Dev Varma said, 'Qadir Ali Baig was a luminary ahead of his times who has a lasting impression on society. The country is proud of his enduring legacy, which his family continues to preserve by shaping Hyderabad's cultural scene. His work continues to inspire theatre practitioners around the country even today. He left behind a legacy that Hyderabad calls its own.' Former Head of Delhi's National School of Drama observed, 'Qadir sahab was a complete theatre person, an actor, director, producer whose plays focused on Indian history and national integration'. Many prominent personalities from the city, including artistes, dancers, bureaucrats, defence personnel and art lovers, attended the annual event.

However, some social media users, instead of just celebrating the Indian champion, have flooded the comments section with racist remarks. Many users targeted Gukesh's nationality with xenophobic and derogatory comments, sparking outrage online. An NRI pointed it out in an X post and wrote, 'Can I ask why isn't @NorwayChess moderating its TikTok account, despite repeated racist comments targeting Gukesh? These comments are visible, liked by thousands, and consistently appear at the top.'
