Panthers star blasts vicious social media abuse he was subjected to after 30-30 stalemate against the Cowboys

Daily Mail11-05-2025

Penrith Panthers star Mitchell Kenny has revealed the vile abuse he received on social media in the wake of Penrith's 30-30 draw against the Cowboys on Saturday.
Ivan Cleary's side are currently enduring one of their worst starts to an NRL season, with the defending champions having slumped to second-bottom on the ladder, having lost six of their opening 10 matches this year.
Following Saturday's match, both the Cowboys and Panthers may be thinking about what could have been, with both sides missing opportunities to win the match.
Jake Clifford and Scott Drinkwater both failed to convert shots at match winners for the home side, while Cleary had a shot at goal himself in extra time charged down.
Kenny, meanwhile, could have given the Penrith halfback a shot at goal in regulation time. But the hooker had instead opted to shift left on the last tackle and found contact.
Following the match, Kenny took to Instagram to reveal the disgusting abuse he has copped on social media from some fans.
One appeared to have been incensed by his decision not to pass the ball to Cleary in the dying embers of the game, claiming Kenny had lost him 'a trillion dollars'.
'F*****g useless ****, you've f*****g cost me a trillion dollars cause your a f*****g hog,' the social media user had said to Kenny.
'Imagine having the greatest ever player and not using him so the most f*****g mid **** on the planet can scoot on the last play of the game instead of kicking a field goal.
'What could of possibly been going through your f*****g thick head.
'Moron. F*** you.'
Kenny clapped back with a funny response.
'Send us your bank details, I'll send you the trillion sorry legend,' he added.
He then added: 'These things happen aye! Have a good weekend, everyone.'
Scott Drinkwater (pictured) also missed several opportunities to seal the victory for the Cowboys
It is not the first time an NRL player has been lambasted by a fan over a bet with Josh Morris having once copped flak from a fuming fan.
He replied to the supporter: 'I don't care about your multis'.
North Queensland, meanwhile, will be ruing their missed chances following Saturday's game.
As Todd Payten put it after the match, it's 'two weeks on the trot they had been in winning positions and couldn't get it done'.
'I'm sure I'll feel a little bit better about it tomorrow but right at the moment it's just frustration,' Payton added.
The four-time reigning premiers also regretted giving up a 12-point lead twice in the game, the second time when the Cowboys scored twice in two minutes late.
'Whenever that happens you feel a little bit disappointed,' said Panthers coach Ivan Cleary.
'I feel like we should've definitely closed it out in the second half but having said that, once it was 30-all, I think we did quite well to not lose.'

Talagi continued his rise to help the Panthers in the fight to salvage their slow-starting season, while the Cowboys moved into the top eight to finish the round.
Prized recruit Talagi was unable to break into the team when Penrith fell to the Cowboys in round five but had a hand in all five of their tries this time around.
Talagi managed a one-handed offload to help in-form Isaiah Papali'i open the scoring inside five minutes, with the five-eighth then throwing the last ball for Luke Garner's first.
With his boot, Talagi threaded a grubber kick for Garner to complete his double in the first half and then channelled Cleary by sending a perfect kick over the defensive line for Tom Jenkins to score.
Talagi then put the Panthers ahead by 12 points by scoring a try of his own following a knock-on in the in-goal from Cowboys winger Robert Derby, who had a hellish night.
'He's certainly on the right trajectory,' coach Cleary said of Talagi.
Penrith boss Ivan Cleary (pictured) admitted he was disappointed his sidecould not get the victory
'He's a bit like the moment Blaize, when he gets the ball, both coaches hold their breath. But that's what we love about him, he just comes to the game, gets better all the time.
'I'm really enjoying him being part of our team.'
The Cowboys locked the scores at 30 scoring twice in quick succession in the final 10 minutes, with Derby first redeeming himself on the right before Drinkwater found Tom Dearden in support.
Fighting to hold his NSW fullback jersey from in-form James Tedesco, Penrith's Dylan Edwards had a quieter performance than he'd have liked, notably dropping a Dearden kick to put the Panthers under early pressure.
He finished with 190 metres and one tackle break in his final game before State of Origin teams are picked, with the Panthers on the bye next weekend.

Footy fans rocked by State of Origin disaster - as team bosses rush to replace superstar Mitch Moses ahead of game two

NSW five-eighth Mitch Moses has been ruled out of the second State of Origin match after suffering a calf strain at training. The injury is a big blow to the Blues' hopes of sealing a series victory in Perth on Wednesday. The Blues will determine the Parramatta five-eighth's replacement later on Thursday afternoon, with Wests Tigers star Jarome Luai expected to be a direct swap. Moses was preferred to Luai for the opening game of the series, while Burton was named as a replacement player for game two. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Luai will be ushered into camp. It is understood Luai's handling of his demotion before game one impressed coach Laurie Daley and NSW staff. Statistically, Cleary and Luai are the most successful halves pairings in NRL history by win percentage after 50 games. The duo won four premierships together at Penrith before Luai moved to the Tigers on a deal worth a reported $1.2million a season.

Revealed: How footy star Wes Maas made his $800million fortune - and volunteered to spend big bucks to help NSW win State of Origin

Former NRL player and rich-lister Wes Maas has gone from fringe South Sydney Rabbitoh to running a $1.5billion business - and he's used some of his incredible fortune to make a sensational offer to NSW Blues star Matt Burton. Maas won two reserve-grade premierships with Parramatta before playing for the Rabbitohs at NRL level, but the shrewd businessman now devotes his time to Maas Group, a massive construction and property company that is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX). Like Burton, Maas is no stranger to Dubbo rugby league, having played for powerhouse club Dubbo CYMS, where he was coached by future Bulldogs mentor Dean Pay and played alongside Penrith star Isaah Yeo's father Justin. The 45-year-old was forced into an early retirement from the game due to shoulder issues in 2002, but returned to Dubbo, almost 400km north-west of Sydney, using $14,000 in savings to buy a Bobcat earthmover before borrowing $25,000 to pick up a single tipper truck. And look where he is now. Maas employs more than 1200 people and runs a company worth $1.5billion, with his estimated worth pegged at $814 million in 2024. Maas said business was always more important to him than his footy career. 'I was probably one of the 10 per cent of people who wanted to work. I've always been a workaholic. That was probably to the detriment of my footy career,' he told a Financial Review podcast. 'I was a full-time football player. But I used to go to training at 6am in the morning, and then I finished footy training at 11 or 12, and then I'd get straight to work.' He was a greenkeeper at Parramatta Stadium and Stadium Australia before moving into the hire and construction industry with Coates Hire. The former footy player still owns 50 per cent of his company, which has four divisions: real estate, civil construction and hire, construction materials and manufacturing. 'Most of the things we do, we do 80 per cent of in house. We're quite different to a lot of developers who contract out,' he told Fairfax. 'Our cost is our cost. Obviously, we've seen inflation in house building, but we've been able to pass that on in house prices. We've maintained our margin. 'On the infrastructure side the business is as strong as ever, on the construction materials side it's as strong as ever. We've got a better forward order book than we've ever had.' Burton, who has been the 18th man five times for the Blues, got a call from NSW management during his bye week leading into Origin game one this year. The Bulldogs star was relaxing in his home town of Dubbo and was told that Stephen Crichton had injured himself and was in doubt for the Opener. If Crichton couldn't play, Campbell Graham would be called in to play and Burton would need to get to Brisbane to be the 18th man. Burton decided to call Massa, who is a mate of his. 'There wasn't going to be a flight straight from Dubbo to Brisbane, they'd been booked up, and obviously you want to give Critta as much time as possible to be right,' Burton told the Sydney Morning Herald. 'Because they couldn't make a call on Critta until 8am game day, the situation was pretty tight. Dubbo to Sydney and then flying to Brisbane, that was going to be too much running around and too tight again with not many flights. 'I didn't have any footy gear or anything either. I was on holiday. So I was ringing the Dogs and my manager for boots and footy kit, just having that ready in case. 'And I had a good mate with a plane in Dubbo who was ready to go, and I think he was pretty keen to do it, to be honest. It would've made an awesome story, right?

Aussie cricket legend Matthew Hayden leaves fans in shock with his bizarre fashion sense

Aussie cricket legend Matthew Hayden was a talking point at Lord's during the World Test Championship - and it had nothing to do with his commentary. Hayden, 53, rocked his trademark Stetson hat when Pat Cummins ' men took on South Africa on day one of the World Test Championship final on Wednesday. The decorated batsman - who is yet to comment publicly about the piece of attire he proudly dons on his head - was ridiculed on social media in images showing him alongside Proteas great Hashim Amla and former English star Kevin Pietersen. 'What is Haydos wearing,' asked one fan on Instagram. 'Is Haydos from Texas,' joked another. The popular Facebook page Cricket Related Simpson Quotes also poked fun at Hayden, suggesting he was sporting a hidden camera under the novelty-sized hat. Meanwhile, Hayden was one of seven global stars recently inducted to the ICC Hall of Fame following his glittering career for Australia between 1993 and 2009. With 30 Test centuries and a batting average of 50.73, Hayden's outstanding numbers in the traditional format of the game speak for themselves. The left-hander was just as adept in the 50-over game, with Hayden smashing three centuries alone at the 2007 edition of the ICC men's Cricket World Cup to finish the tournament as the leading run-scorer. It was the second of two World Cup titles Hayden helped Australia win. Hayden was thrilled to receive the induction. 'The ICC Hall of Fame includes many of my heroes of yesteryear as well as contemporaries whom I admired and enjoyed competing against,' he said. 'Each of these players gave something to the game in their own way. It is incredible to be recognised along with them.' His daughter Grace also took to Facebook to toast the achievement. 'To say I'm proud would be understatement,' her post began. 'But the man I knew was just my Dad. The big soft teddy bear that gave every part of himself to his family.
