The United Kingdom has announced plans to build 12 new nuclear submarines in preparation for potential armed aggression from Russia.

Details: According to The Sunday Times, the UK is planning to construct 12 new nuclear attack submarines to replace the seven existing Astute-class submarines equipped with conventional weapons and to complement the four Trident nuclear missile strategic submarines that form the sea-based component of the UK's nuclear deterrent.
The new submarines are expected to enter service by the late 2030s.
They will be part of the AUKUS trilateral security pact signed between the UK, the US and Australia in 2021. The alliance provides for the sharing of military technology and intelligence and the joint development of submarines. The total number of submarines ordered under AUKUS will reach 20.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will also promise to invest £15 billion (around US$20 billion) in a nuclear warhead development programme.
The Sunday Times noted that this is the first time the UK has revealed both the number of nuclear attack submarines to replace the Astute class and the scale of investment in warhead development programmes.
Details about the rearmament of the British forces are expected to be outlined in the UK government's strategic defence review, which will be published on Monday 2 June.
Defence Secretary John Healey said that the UK must be ready for armed attack from Russia and that the review will send a "message to Moscow" about the country's readiness for combat.
The 130-page document will also recommend putting the UK armed forces on a state of combat readiness in response to the "immediate and pressing" threat from Russia.
Background: Prior to that, The Sunday Times reported that the UK government is negotiating with the Pentagon to purchase US F-35A Lightning stealth fighters capable of launching tactical nuclear weapons.

DOD civilians can now aid DHS with ‘internal immigration enforcement,' per memo
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has authorized Defense Department (DOD) civilian employees to aid Department of Homeland Security (DHS) operations at the southern border and with 'internal immigration enforcement,' in some cases for no pay, according to a new memo released Monday. DOD civilians can now travel to support DHS with the Trump administration's immigration enforcement, though it is unclear whether they would volunteer for such roles or be assigned to DHS activities. The memo did not specify what types of jobs they would be doing. But Hegseth made clear that some individuals might not be paid for their work, noting that assignments 'may be either reimbursable or non-reimbursable.' The document, dated June 1, noted that the under secretary of Defense for personnel and readiness would provide further guidance. 'Protecting our homeland from bad actors and illegal substances has been a focus of the President and of the Secretary of Defense since Day One of this Administration,' chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement accompanying the memo. 'Whether on the border or in our communities, allowing qualified DoD civilian employees to support DHS will accelerate the progress already made by Service members in achieving our national security goals.' The Pentagon did not respond to requests for comment from The Hill. The memo comes amid the Trump administration's increasing use of the military to aid in combatting illegal immigration and removing immigrants in the United States without legal status. Last month, DHS requested 20,000 National Guard troops'to help carry out the President's mandate from the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens,' DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia told The Hill at the time. And just 11 days ago the Pentagon announced it was sending 1,115 additional active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, bringing the number of service members there close to 10,000. But with Hegseth's latest memo, it appears DOD civilians for the first time would be actively assisting in DHS immigration crackdown efforts, and possibly on their own accord. He notes that in the case of a non-reimbursable detail assignment, it could be authorized 'where the expected benefit of a detail would be comparable to training or development programs that otherwise would be conducted' at the Pentagon's expense. He instructs defense leaders to consider factors 'such as whether the tasks to be carried out by employees during the detail are of a similar nature to the tasks those employees execute in the course of their normal duties; whether the detail would otherwise enhance the skills and further develop the employees professionally;' and the duration of the considered detail, which could impact to Pentagon is the employee is gone too long. Hegseth Orders Renaming Of Navy Ship Honoring LGBTQ+ Icon Harvey Milk: Reports
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the Navy to rename the USNS Harvey Milk honoring the slain LGBTQ+ rights icon and military veteran, according to reports. The timing of the name change, which was reported on the third day of Pride Month, was intentional, a person familiar with the plans told which was the first to report Hegseth's order. When reached for comment, chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell wouldn't confirm the name change but said Hegseth is focused on aligning military institutions with President Donald Trump's views. 'Secretary Hegseth is committed to ensuring that the names attached to all DOD installations and assets are reflective of the Commander-in-Chief's priorities, our nation's history, and the warrior ethos. Any potential renaming(s) will be announced after internal reviews are complete,' Parnell said. A memo obtained by shows that the name change is scheduled to be announced June 13 aboard the USS Constitution. Milk was the first openly gay man elected to public office in California. He served less than a year on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors before being assassinated in 1978. Prior to his career in politics, Milk joined the Navy during the Korean War and served until 1955 when he was forcibly discharged because of his sexual orientation. The USNS Harvey Milk was named in his honor in 2016, while President Barack Obama was still in office. It was one of several ships named for civil rights icons that year. Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, who represents much of San Francisco in Congress, reacted to the reported name change, calling it a 'shameful, vindictive erasure of those who fought to break down barriers for all to chase the American Dream.' Barclays mobilized over $687M in climate tech investments since 2020: report

Barclays' climate investment arm has enabled 508 million pounds (nearly $687 million) in investments focused on climate technology and innovation since 2020, the British bank said in its latest impact report Monday. This figure includes Barclays Climate Ventures financing 203 million pounds (around $274 million) of the bank's own equity and facilitating a further 305 million pounds (around $412 million) through third-party investments, per the bank. Barclays said it led or co-led 61% of the funding rounds it participated in, and every one pound invested through Barclays Climate Ventures unlocked an additional 2.18 pounds from third parties. The fund has a mandate to invest half a billion pounds into equity capital in climate tech startups between 2020-2027. The London-based bank said the investments will help 'address a systematic growth-stage financing gap' that is often associated with developing climate tech companies. Steven Poulter, head of Barclays Climate Ventures, called climate tech 'key to delivering the next generation energy system,' in a June 2 release, adding that it helps address climate change while 'supporting a successful and growing economy with affordable and resilient energy.' 'New climate tech is needed to improve the resiliency of the energy grid, increase energy efficiency, and diversify energy supply, including the provision of alternative energy sources for sectors of the economy where energy demand can't viably be met through electrification, such as aviation,' Poulter said. Since launching in 2020, Barclays Climate Ventures has backed over 20 companies focused on climate innovation, as of December 2024. The subsidiary has supported a wide range of climate tech solutions through its investments, including long-duration energy storage, hydrogen and carbon management technologies, according to its website. Barclays impact report said the bank prioritizes investments in technologies that are both commercially scalable and can help unlock the clean energy transition for high emitting sectors, especially those where Barclays has substantial client exposure. These sectors include energy and power, real estate and food and agriculture. In addition to financial backing, the bank gives early and growth stage startups access to its in-house climate tech escalator, which helps climate tech companies develop their product and scale in size by offering them dedicated, customized support. Such support includes counseling from Barclays board members; advice from senior bankers, policy experts and sector specialists; access to the bank's client base and exposure through events, marketing platforms and communications. Barclays' impact report comes shortly after its Group Head of Sustainability Laura Barlow stepped down from her role in January. At the time, a Barclays spokesperson told ESG Dive that Barlow would remain with the bank in the capacity of a senior adviser while her responsibilities would be taken on by Daniel Hanna, who serves as Barclays' Group Head of Sustainable and Transition Finance.
