Nvidia, Perplexity partner with European firms to boost local AI models
SAN FRANCISCO :Nvidia and artificial intelligence search firm Perplexity on Wednesday said they are partnering with more than a dozen AI firms in Europe and the Middle East to refine those firms' AI technologies and distribute them to local businesses.
Nvidia said it will work with model makers in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and Sweden to help make AI models in local languages become what are called reasoning models, which are capable of carrying out more complicated tasks.
AI technologies built in English and Chinese have started to shift to that technology, but that transition is more difficult in languages where less training data is available.
Kari Briski, vice president of generative AI software for enterprise at Nvidia, said the company will help model makers generate new data - known as synthetic data - in local languages to help improve them.
"We're doing a lot of synthetic data generation to bring to these low-resource languages and translating our reasoning data so that they can train on it," Briski said in an interview Tuesday. "Europe needs strong models that reflect each nation's unique language and culture."
Once those local models are trained, Perplexity will help distribute them in Europe, where businesses can run them in local data centers and use them to carry out business tasks such as researching a new topic. Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said Germany is already Perplexity's second largest market by revenue.
"That's the kind of system we are heading to in the future, where models are basically doing a few hours' worth of work in one single prompt," Srinivas said.
The deal was part of a number of announcements Nvidia made at an AI conference in Paris on Wednesday. Nvidia and Perplexity did not disclose any financial terms of the deal.

Meta signs deal for advanced geothermal power in New Mexico
NEW YORK :Meta signed an agreement with XGS Energy to help develop 150 megawatts of advanced geothermal electricity in New Mexico to power the Facebook parent company's artificial intelligence expansion, the companies said on Thursday. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Giant technology companies like Meta are striking unprecedented power deals to secure massive amounts of electricity for the data centers needed to develop AI, which is a top driver of the record U.S. power consumption projected for 2025 and 2026. Geothermal energy, which does not produce climate-warming carbon emissions, has become a popular source of electricity for Big Tech companies, many of which have emissions reduction goals. Unlike conventional geothermal power production, advanced geothermal does not rely on natural water sources. Last year, Google announced plans to fuel its data centers with advanced geothermal power produced by Fervo Energy. CONTEXT While 150 megawatts is a tiny fraction of the many gigawatts of power sought by technology companies to power AI, it would represent about 4 per cent of total U.S. geothermal production. New Mexico, which lays claim to a section of the world's largest shale oil basin, has 160,000 megawatts of untapped geothermal power generation potential. The phased-in project between XGS and Meta is projected to be operational by the end of the decade. The advanced geothermal electricity will be deployed to the electric grid and support Meta's operations in the state. KEY QUOTE 'With next-generation geothermal technologies like XGS ready for scale, geothermal can be a major player in supporting the advancement of technologies like AI as well as domestic data center development," Urvi Parekh, Global Head of Energy at Meta said in a written statement.

Sporting say no gentleman's agreement, or offers, for Gyokeres transfer
Sporting President Frederico Varandas has shot down reports the club would accept 70 million euros ($81.05 million) for Viktor Gyokeres and said he had not received an offer for the Sweden striker who has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal. Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals last season, has three years left on his contract, which contains a 100 million euros release clause. While Varandas said the club would not seek the full amount of the clause for the 27-year-old, he denied reports there was a "gentleman's agreement" that would allow him to leave for 70 million euros in the transfer window. "I can guarantee that Viktor Gyokeres will not leave for 60 million euros plus 10 million euros because I never promised that," Varandas told reporters on Wednesday. "To this day Sporting has not had an offer for Gyokeres — neither today nor last season." Gyokeres has bagged 97 goals in 102 matches for the Portuguese side since his 2023 move from Coventry City, winning the Primeira Liga title in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. No player in European leagues had scored more league goals this season than Gyokeres (39 in 33 games). The striker said in a post on Instagram: "There is a lot of talks at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right." Varandas said he had told Gyokeres' agent that while they would not demand the full release clause the club would not set a specific price that would trigger a transfer. "I said this sentence: 'It's not worth us setting a value because I don't know what will happen in a year's time," he added. ($1 = 0.8636 euros)

Adobe raises annual forecasts on steady adoption of AI-powered tools
Adobe raised its full-year results forecast on Thursday, helped by continued demand for its AI-powered software tools that generate images and video content. The company, an industry veteran in the creative software market, is known for its flagship products, such as Photoshop and Premiere Pro, which have become essential tools for professionals worldwide. Despite a weak first quarter marked by budget constraints and project delays amid macroeconomic uncertainties, Jefferies analysts said demand seemed to start recovering in the second quarter as clients resumed stalled projects and adjusted to the changing environment, supporting ongoing growth targets. Adobe expects revenue to be between $23.50 billion and $23.60 billion in fiscal 2025, compared with its prior range of $23.30 billion to $23.55 billion. Excluding items, it raised its full-year profit to between $20.50 and $20.70 per share, from its prior range of $20.20 to $20.50 each. "We continue to invest in AI innovation across our customer groups to enhance value realization and expand the universe of customers we serve," finance chief Dan Durn said. In 2023, Adobe launched Firefly, which enables users to create, edit and enhance images and videos from simple text prompts. Powered by ethically sourced training from exclusively licensed or public domain images, Adobe Firefly expands the company's AI-driven creative tools, enabling users to accelerate ideation and content creation while ensuring brand safety and copyright compliance. Adobe said in April it was integrating image-generation AI models from OpenAI and Google into its Firefly app. Revenue for the second quarter stood at $5.87 billion, above the analysts' average estimate of $5.79 billion.
