AP government creating hurdles for funeral of Basavaraju in Srikakulam district alleges CPI (ML) New Democracy

The Hindu26-05-2025

CPI (ML) New Democracy State spokesperson P.Prasad and the party's Srikakulam District Secretary Tandra Prakash on Monday expressed concern over the not handing over of the body of the slain CPI (Maoist) General Secretary Nambala Keshava Rao alias Basavaraju to his family members although he was killed in an encounter five days ago in Abujhmadh area of Chhattisgarh. They alleged that the AP government ignored AP High Court's order which has given an order in the favour of family members of Mr.Keshava Rao.
According to them, Mr.Keshava Rao's brother N. Ramprasad went to Narayanpur of Chhattisgarh on May 22 to bring back the body to his native place Jiyyannapet of Kotabommali mandal of Srikakulam district. Police officials of Andhra Pradesh declined the permission and prevented Chhattisgarh police personnel from handing over Keshava Rao's body to the family members. Mr.Keshava Rao's another brother N. Dilleswara Rao has been moving around the police station for the last three days to get the nod from the police for the funeral in the native place.
Mr.Prasad who is also the State President of Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU) alleged that AP government was creating hurdles for the funeral in the native place with the unnecessary fear of Maoist activities in the State in future. Mr.Prakash said that respectable funeral was the right of the family members. He charged that the State government was putting pressure on the Chhattisgarh administration to ensure funeral locally since bringing the Basavaraju's body to native place might trigger agitations in Srikakulam district. Higher officials of Srikakulam police department were tight lipped over the issue.

Bharat Mata on poster for CPI meet, party pulls it out

Kottayam: Even as the controversy over displaying Bharat Mata portrait at a function in Raj Bhavan continued, a poster for Kottayam CPI conference displayed Bharat Mata holding a national flag. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Sensing trouble, party district leadership immediately withdrew the poster that appeared on various social media platforms. The poster was brought out in connection with the delegates' meet to be held from June 13 to 15. Bharat Mata was draped in a tricolour saree on the poster. CPI district secretary V B Binu said it was not right to use the national flag along with the party symbol or use it along with party functions. He cited this for withdrawing the poster immediately after it came to his notice. The controversy began on June 5 when agriculture minister P Prasad of CPI opted out of the World Environment Day function at Raj Bhavan after governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar insisted on displaying Bharat Mata's portrait at the event. After CPI withdrew the poster, BJP congratulated CPI's Kottayam district leadership for circulating the poster and termed it as a response to Prasad's decision to boycott the event at Raj Bhavan. In a statement, BJP functionary N Hari said that the poster was the beginning of a big change and that it was regrettable that the Left party withdrew it and issued an explanation. During the freedom struggle, leaders of the movement had proudly raised 'Bharat Mata ki jai' slogans, but that is not the situation now, Hari's statement added. "They are afraid to say Bharat Mata and this fear is due to vote bank politics," he alleged. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On Monday, Arlekar paid tributes to a Bharat Mata portrait during Goa Day celebrations at Raj Bhavan. Goa Foundation Day was celebrated at the Kerala Raj Bhavan as part of 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' initiative, the governor's office said. Earlier, Prasad, who refused to pay floral tributes to the portrait, said there was no official version of Bharat Mata according to the Constitution or India govt, and the portrait at the event was widely used by RSS. Shortly thereafter, CPI announced a campaign of hoisting the national flag and planting saplings before it. On June 7, CPI hoisted national flags and planted saplings at all its branches and also raised Bharat Mata ki jai slogans. The very next day, Arlekar took a dig at the Left party saying, "Those who never thought of Bharat Mata are saying Bharat Mata ki jai. That is a good contribution. I appreciate that." The same day, CPM state secretary M V Govindan came out in support of its LDF ally saying there was no concept of Bharat Mata as it was not there in the Constitution. (With agency inputs)

CPI(M)‘s M.A. Baby tours areas hit by shelling in Kashmir, expresses concern over ‘poor' compensation

A high-level delegation of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), headed by party general secretary M.A. Baby, on Tuesday (June 10, 2025) visited the population affected by shelling near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. Mr. Baby expressed concern over the poor compensation provided to affected families. Mr. Baby was accompanied by CPI(M) MPs Amra Ram, K. Radhakrishnan, John Brittas, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya, S.U. Venkatesan, and A.A. Rahim. 'The situation is highly distressing because of the devastation and destruction [during Operation Sindoor]. The decision to grant ₹1.30 lakh as compensation is very meagre. J&K is a Union Territory now and is being ruled by the Centre. It's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah who are controlling everything here,' Mr. Baby, a former Rajya Sabha MP and Kerala Minister, said. He said the decision to revoke J&K's special status and reduce a full-fledged State into a Union Territory was 'an attack on democracy'. 'I am told the elected Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is not invited to important review meetings. These meetings are chaired by the Lieutenant Governor. Even the democratic process is being destroyed in J&K,' Mr. Baby said. The CPI(M) general secretary said his party MPs would take the issue of compensation in Parliament 'very seriously'. 'There are families, with eight members, living in one room in the name of shelter. The plight of border residents needed to be discussed. It's unfortunate that the Prime Minister did not attend the recent all-party meeting. His rhetoric cannot compensate for what people have suffered here,' Mr. Baby said. He also expressed concern over the lack of individual shelters for the population in vulnerable areas of the LoC. The CPI(M) is holding a one-day convention on the restoration of the legitimate constitutional rights of the people of Jammu & Kashmir in Srinagar on Wednesday (June 11, 2025). Mr. Baby and his party colleague, MLA M.Y. Tarigami, among others, will address the convention.

CPI(M-L) likely to contest around 45 seats in Bihar Assembly election

The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), an ally of the Opposition Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) in Bihar, is planning to contest around 45 seats of the total 243 in the Assembly election due later this year. The CPI(M-L) will also launch a campaign, 'Badlo Sarkar-Badlo Bihar' (change the government, change Bihar)', across the State soon. Addressing mediapersons in Patna on Tuesday (June 10, 2025), CPI(M-L) national general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said: 'Our party has been making preparations to contest 40-45 Assembly seats in the upcoming election. In the coming days, there would be talks on seat sharing and the agendas on which the Mahagathbandhan would contest the poll.' Won 12 in 2020 election In the last 2020 Assembly election, the party won 12 seats out of 19 it contested. The CPI(M-L), the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) together won 16 out of the total 29 seats in the election. The CPI had contested six seats, while the CPI(M) fought on four seats. Both won two seats each. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the CPI(M-L) won two seats of Ara and Karakat of the total 40 seats. 'No governance' The CPI(M-L) slammed the NDA governments led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Centre and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in the State on national security and law and order issues. 'Today there is no government as such in the State. Law and order has collapsed and the people of the State are caught between crime and corruption,' Mr. Bhattacharya alleged. 'Cases of rape have become common, and feudal atrocities have increased in the name of development and good governance in the State. People of the State now are trying to get rid of this oppressive government,' he said. The party leader said the CPI(M-L) would run the Badlo Sarkar-Badlo Bihar campaign from June 18 to June 27, especially in the four regions of Shahabad, Saran-Champaran, Magadh, and Muzaffarpur to Darbhanga. Calls for special session The CPI(M-L) leader criticised the Modi-led government over its foreign policy too. 'The Modi government had sent seven delegations to 32 countries (following Operation Sindoor), but India's international isolation continues. They [the Central government] should call a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terrorist incident and the situation thereafter,' he said. 'The BJP-led NDA government has weakened the country on every front, especially on issues related with national security and foreign policy,' he said. On the ongoing (anti-Maoist) 'Operation Kagar' in Chhattisgarh, Mr. Bhattacharya said: 'It's all state- sponsored violence. The five Left parties of the country have written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 9 demanding an immediate stay on the ongoing operation.' Polit Bureau member Dhirendra Jha, party legislators Gopal Ravidas and Sandeep Saurabh, party MLC Sashi Yadav, and senior State leaders K.D. Yadav and Umesh Singh were present on the occasion.
