‘There was a body going over the hood and he just kept driving': Chester Avenue hit-and-run suspect arraigned in court
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A man was arraigned Friday on charges of hit-and-run resulting in death.
The crash occurred Wednesday morning on the Chester Avenue bridge.
According to Bakersfield police, the crash happened early Wednesday morning on the Chester Avenue bridge near Columbus Street, the main throughway between central Bakersfield and Oildale. The driver of the truck didn't stop, and kept going.
Another man was walking on the sidewalk next to Ross, and he was struck by debris. He identified the vehicle and police used Flock cameras to find the owner.
'Immediately found an older model, white truck which matched parts at the scene that were left behind from the collision,' said Rex Davenport, a sergeant with Bakersfield Police.
Flock cameras are black, surveillance cameras that are constantly recording for police to check after the fact, in an investigation.
Headlight parts were left at the scene that matched the truck found in the footage.
'We get hundreds of hit-and-runs here in town, whether they're online reports or in-person reports and that's pretty much the first thing we go to are Flock cameras when there's suspect vehicle information,' said Davenport.
Officers ultimately arrested 35-year-old Bobby Lemons, and he was arraigned in court Friday afternoon.
In court, when asked about bail, Court Commissioner Sally Ackerknecht said, 'My concern was the fact that there was a body going over the hood and he just kept driving.'

Lemons was allegedly arrested for hit-and-run resulting in death and faces up to four years in prison, and a $10,000 fine.
Family has identified the victim in the crash as 48-year-old John Ross. While they didn't want to go on camera, his daughter sent us a statement:
'He loved his family more than anything. He was goofy, giving, caring, and spontaneous. He leaves behind two kids and four grandchildren. We didn't get a chance to see my father. We didn't get to say goodbye. This driver took away so much from us. We will never get back.'
By our count, There have been five pedestrian fatalities on Chester Avenue since 2023, three of them being hit-and-runs. The other two happened just one day apart from each other in March of 2023.
The victims are Jesus Alberto Nelson and Sandra Marie Gannaway.
At last check, no arrests have been made.

Pack of dogs kill 15-year-old Arkansas girl who was caring for them
A 15-year-old girl in Arkansas died Wednesday after a pack of dogs she was caring for attacked her, authorities said. The Saline County Sheriff's Office said it received a 911 call around 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday reporting that a girl had been attacked by dogs. When deputies and EMTs arrived at the scene, they found a 15-year-old who had been fatally attacked by dogs "within a secured, fenced area" on the property. Officials said about 30 dogs were being housed on the property as part of a makeshift animal rescue. "The victim has been previously assisting the rescue with the care of the animals and was helping to find them permanent homes," the sheriff's office said in a statement on social media. "The reason for the sudden and tragic attack is currently unknown." Officials did not name the victim but local outlet MySaline identified her as 15-year-old Makayla Fortner. The teen was remembered as a "beautiful, bright girl with the kindest soul," according to a GoFundMe set up to assist her mother. The sheriff's office said the city of Benton's animal control seized the dogs involved in the attack. The investigation remains ongoing. Officials said Thursday that 14 of the dogs involved were euthanized, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported. "It's one of those horrible situations," Matt Thibault, a spokesman for Benton, told the newspaper. "This had all the best of intentions, and it turned into the worst nightmare for everybody involved." Neighbors told ABC affiliate KATV that they had complained multiple times to the county about the dogs, which they said were not controlled by their owners. "These dogs were very vicious at the fence to the point that no one wanted to let their children walk to and from the bus stop, like you had to get out here to get your 15-year-old off the bus because of these dogs… they do not look well-cared for," Heidi Clay told the station. Neighbors believe the girl's death could have been prevented if the county had acted sooner. "And if somebody had done something, then maybe this little girl would be alive," Clay said.

Arrest made in local sports reporter's murder, six months after deadly roadside shooting
A Missouri man has been arrested and charged in connection with a Jan. 10 road-rage shooting that left a former sports reporter dead. Ruslan Huseynov, 34, is charged with second-degree murder, two counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon in connection with Dennis Sharkey Jr.'s death, according to Platte County records. The Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department initially received a 911 call around 7 p.m. on Jan. 10 from a man and his girlfriend, who had been driving behind Huseynov's and Sharkey's vehicles on I-29, driving southbound in the right-hand lane. Huseynov's vehicle was at the front with Sharkey's directly behind his, and the witnesses behind Sharkey, according to a probable cause statement filed in Platte County. The witnesses described seeing the suspect and victim's vehicles come to a stop in front of them, forcing them to stop on the interstate, as well, the probable cause statement says. The witnesses then pulled into the middle lane and continued southbound on I-29, but as they were driving by the two stopped cars, they saw the suspect, who appeared to be of 'Middle Eastern or Italian' descent, in the first car get out of his vehicle with a gun. 'They noticed the man with the gun point it at the victim's car and then fled the scene. They heard a gunshot as they continued southbound on I-29 and called 911,' the probable cause statement reads. 5 Dennis Sharkey Jr. was killed in a shooting while driving with his wife on I-29 on Jan. 10, 2025. Renton, WA couple looks to move after claiming years of homophobic harassment

Renton Police are investigating the incidents, and the family is raising funds to move to a safer neighborhood. RENTON, Wash. - A Renton couple says they are looking to move to a new home after enduring years of homophobic harassment in the Fairwood neighborhood. Fernando Vega says his Ring camera captured kids in his apartment complex ripping off a Pride flag from his porch in the summer of 2023. Vega says he spoke with the boy's parents, who later apologized. But in April 2025, Vega says his Ring camera captured a boy, claiming he was the person who stole his Pride flag in 2023. Vega claims he, his husband and his sister have suffered harassment, homophobic and racial slurs, and this past week, an attempted break-in. "I do not believe this is a joke, this is malicious," said Vega. Vega says he and his family were at home on Wednesday night, when a group tried to break into his sister's room, and he went running after them. "That's when I told them they needed to get off the property, yelling at them, trying to get them to leave," said Vega. Instead of apologizing, Vega says someone in the group pulled out an airsoft gun and began shooting at him. "I was hit probably between 20 to 30 times," said Vega. The Renton Police Department confirms officers did meet with Vega for a report of malicious mischief, and they are currently investigating this case. In the meantime, Vega and his family are trying to move to a more accepting neighborhood and have started a GoFundMe to help them with moving expenses.
