East Alabama husband grieves wife killed by neighbor's Cane Corso dogs
BEULAH, Ala. (WRBL) – A Beulah man is mourning the loss of his wife after she was attacked and killed by her neighbor's dogs along Lee Road 356 near the backwaters of Lake Harding
Thomas Burt says he and his wife, Patricia Burt, 78, were inseparable for 35 years, spending every moment together. Now, he is left struggling to process the tragedy that took her life.
'She was a good person. She was my friend, my best buddy. We spent every waking minute together. I loved her so much,' Burt told WRBL's Elizabeth White in an emotional interview.
Thomas and Patricia first met at work. After their first date at a Halloween party, Thomas knew she was the one. Their bond only grew stronger over the years.
'Stayed together 35 years—back and forth every day, never missed a minute of trying to be with one another. She was a good woman. I don't know what I'm gonna do without her,' he said.
On Monday, February 24, Patricia was visiting her neighbor's mother, who was housesitting for her son. As the two women hugged hello, the son's two Cane Corso dogs suddenly escaped their enclosure and attacked Patricia.
The attack was so vicious Thomas had no choice but to act. Desperately trying to save his wife, he shot both dogs. Patricia was rushed to the hospital, but despite all efforts, she died the next day.
'Just pray for me that I am going to get through this,' Thomas pleaded.
WRBL spoke with David Kelley, the owner of the Cane Corsos, who breeds the dogs at his home along Lake Harding. Though he declined an on-camera interview, he told WRBL over the phone he is heartbroken over the loss of his neighbor and is fully cooperating with the investigation.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones confirms there were prior complaints about the dogs harming other animals who walked onto the property, but no reports of them attacking people or getting out of their property. Despite his unimaginable loss, Thomas Burt does not blame his neighbor for what happened.
'Couldn't ask for a better neighbor than David. Wasn't his fault. It was the dogs' fault,' he said.
As the investigation continues, Thomas is left trying to pick up the pieces of a life that will never be the same.
'We had a lot of good years together—it's hard to think about,' he said.

Udall neighbors rattled after park restrooms set on fire — twice
UDALL, Kan. (KSNW) — You could smell it before you saw it — the charred remains of the city park restrooms, torched and melted from the inside out. Udall Police Chief Erik King is calling it arson and says it's unlike anything he's dealt with in town before. The damage is estimated at around $10,000. Loose tire injures two highway cyclists near Atwood 'This is where the trash can was right here in this corner,' King told KSN. 'Melted the alarms, melted the drains, melted the light switches.' Police say it happened Thursday around 4:30 in the afternoon. Then, just hours later, it happened again. 'The same person returned and, at about 8:40 at night, lit the boy's bathroom on fire, and that caused significant damage,' King said. 'It was on fire for 20 minutes before the alarm company notified us.' He says the timing couldn't be worse, with the Fourth of July just around the corner. Neighbors say the smoke drew their attention before they knew what was happening. 'I was doing yardwork and I had the boys, and a lady from out of town came up to the fence and asked if I had seen a person walking around,' said Skylar Kistler, who lives next to the park. That's when she noticed the smoke coming from the bathroom. 'It kind of made us, I guess, feel protective, like a little more protective, like kind of upset that anybody would do that,' she said. Her husband Tylor says the damage is personal. 'I've lived here my whole life, so it's kind of nice to have a park like this with a splashpad, and you know everything here for the boys right in our backyard, and it's just kind of bad. This is a good building, and it's terrible,' he said. Chief King says the person believed to be responsible has been arrested and is currently being held in juvenile detention. In the meantime, the city is bringing in port-a-potties, and repairs could take up to two months. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rapid City man gets 25-years for dealing meth
RAPID CITY, SD (KELO) — A federal judge on Friday sentenced a Rapid City man, tied to a Mexican drug cartel, to 25-years in prison. 38-year-old Guillermo Calderon pleaded guilty in March to Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance. Prosecutors say Calderon was the leader of the conspiracy that trafficked significant amounts of methamphetamine to Rapid City and Pine Ridge from Mexican cartel operatives. Authorities in Iowa arrested Calderon in January 2024, while he was allegedly driving 20-pounds of meth into South Dakota. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Father disarmed son after deadly shooting
WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Newly released court documents are shedding light on the case of a Wichita man charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of his pregnant girlfriend, 20-year-old Naomi Oglesby. Matthew Criscenzo, 19, was arrested at the scene on May 25 after officers found Oglesby shot in the head inside a home on South Laura Street. According to an affidavit made public this week, Criscenzo made multiple unsolicited statements to officers while in custody, saying he 'shot her,' 'didn't want her to go,' and 'didn't think [his] finger was on the trigger.' Flooded in Butler County? Here's how to report damage Oglesby, who was 37 weeks pregnant, was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead minutes after her baby girl was delivered via emergency C-section. The infant survived but suffered severe brain trauma from a lack of oxygen and remains in critical condition. Criscenzo's father was home at the time and called 911 after hearing a gunshot. He told police he found Naomi on the ground and Matthew holding a gun. He took the weapon away and placed it on the front porch before emergency responders arrived.
