Olympic silver medallist dies in devastating accident aged 30

Perth Now09-05-2025

Tributes are flowing after the shock death of Fijian rugby player and Olympic silver medallist Josaia Raisuqe, aged 30.
Raisuqe, who plays for French rugby team Castres, was a member of Fiji's rugby sevens Olympic team that won silver last year.
Castres said Raisuqe died in a 'road accident' and that the team learned of the death Thursday morning.
Local media reports his car was struck by a train at a level crossing.
In a statement, Castres said the club 'is in mourning' and postponed its game against ASM Clermont that was scheduled for Saturday.
'The entire CO (Castres Olympique) family is shaken by this terrible news,' the statement read.
'Josh had been part of the club since 2021. He was a wonderful teammate, very much appreciated by all, and by the Castres supporters who had adopted him. We extend our sincere condolences and our thoughts to his family and loved ones.' Raisuqe was a member of Fiji's rugby sevens Olympics team. Credit: Getty
Raisuqe played in the rugby sevens gold medal match in Paris, which Fiji lost 28-7 to host France.
He was a much-loved team member.
The Fiji Drua, who play the Blues later today in their Super Rubgy match, also paid tribute.
'We lost more than a player — we lost a brother, a teammate and a true son of Fijian Rugby,' they said.
'Rest in peace, Jo. Your spirit will forever live on in the game and in our hearts.'
His partner also posted a tribute on Instagram, sharing a range of photos of them together.
'Babe, my love, my beautiful husband. Thank you for all my love. I love you all my life, way up there,' she wrote.
Raisuqe has been playing club rugby in France since 2015, when he joined Top 14 champions Stade Francais.
He also played for second-division side Nevers, and got into an infamous incident in 2021 when, overjoyed by a win, he hoisted the referee over his head after the fulltime whistle. The ref gave him a red card.
The following season, Castres deployed Raisuqe as a flanker en route to the 2022 Top 14 final.
'He was a radiant boy on and off the field, a pillar of the Fijian community we have at the club and to which we are very attached,' Castres chairman Pierre-Yves Revol said.
'It is also difficult at this time not to mention the faith of all these (Fijian) players and of Josaia. My thoughts are with his fiancee and his entire family.'

David Beckham to be awarded knighthood after string of near misses for more than a decade, football news

Don't miss out on the headlines from Football. Followed categories will be added to My News. David Beckham is to finally be awarded a knighthood, The Sun can reveal. The footie legend, 50, will become a 'Sir' in the King's Birthday Honours list next week. His Spice Girl wife Victoria will be known as Lady Beckham. Ex-England and Man United star Becks has longed for a knighthood for years, according to The Sun. The news will also bring some joy to the Beckham household amid a rift with their eldest son Brooklyn and his wife Nicola Peltz. Politicians and fellow sports stars have spent years calling for the man known as 'Golden Balls' to receive a knighthood. The father of four — who played 115 times for England and has made major contributions to charity — has struck up a firm friendship with King Charles. And the monarch dropped a potential hint last month that his wait was coming to an end. Countryside-loving Becks, who is an ambassador of The King's Foundation, was seen greeting Charles and Queen Camilla at the Chelsea Flower Show. David Beckham will be knighted. Becks replied: 'It was incredible, thank you. It was very kind.' Letters inviting recipients to accept honours are sent out weeks in advance – and one may have already landed on David's mat at the time of their chat. He was first put forward for a knighthood in 2011 after helping to secure the London 2012 Olympics. But he was blocked from getting the title by the Honours Committee after becoming caught up in a tax avoidance scheme, along with many other stars. Becks retired from playing in 2013, and his finances were cleared by the taxman at least four years ago – paving the way for him to finally get the coveted honour. Many thought it would finally come in 2022, after he spent 13 hours queuing with the public to pay his respects at Queen Elizabeth's coffin, which lay in state in Westminster. But he was again left waiting for the honour. The Sun understands he narrowly missed out on a knighthood in the New Year Honours List published in December last year. (Photo by Paul Grover –) Former England football manager Gareth Southgate got the award. David had been given an OBE in 2003 for services to football. He received it from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, watched by proud Victoria, sons Brooklyn and Romeo, and his grandparents. David and his wife — who shot to fame with the Spice Girls before becoming a successful fashion designer — have an estimated combined net worth of more than $1 million. David also has a long history of charitable work, which will have been considered by officials on the Honours Committee. Last year, he was formally made a charity ambassador by the King, and beekeeper Becks was buzzing with excitement at teaming up with him. Charles invited Beckham to Highgrove to learn more about the charity, which focuses on 'creating better communities where people, places and the planet can coexist in harmony'. Tours of the grounds help to fund workshops and courses in traditional skills and crafts, and the former footie star met woodworking and embroidery students. Becks said at the time: 'I'm excited to be working with The King's Foundation and to have the opportunity to help raise awareness of the charity's work. 'I've always been keen to help young people to expand their horizons and I'm particularly looking forward to supporting the Foundation's education programs and its efforts to ensure young people have greater access to nature. David Beckham is one of the all-time footballing greats. (Photo by) 'Having developed a love for the countryside I'm also on a personal mission to learn more about rural skills which is so central to the Foundation's work. 'It was inspiring to hear from The King about the work of His Majesty's Foundation during my recent visit to Highgrove Gardens — and compare beekeeping tips.' In 2020, he teamed up with the Chelsea Pensioners as he backed The Sun's campaign to save the Poppy Appeal amid the devastating Covid lockdown. He said he was 'in awe' of the veterans as he delivered poppies to their London HQ. David added: 'With another lockdown coming it is more important than ever that we support our veterans.' Becks, also dad to son Cruz and daughter Harper, has carried out lots of charity work focusing on children, and was appointed a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador 20 years ago. To mark his 50th birthday last month he appealed for donations for the charity. The Beckham family from far left, Romeo, Cruz, Victoria, Harper, David and Brooklyn. Picture: Instagram He was also a founding member of the leadership council of charity Malaria No More in 2009, helping to eradicate the disease, even visiting No 10 to highlight the issue. In 2023, he delighted the Brentford Penguins – a football team for children with Down's syndrome — with a visit to celebrate them winning one of The Sun's Who Cares Wins awards. He took footballing son Romeo with him to lead a surprise training session. David celebrated his 50th last month with a string of parties, though Brooklyn stayed away. The honours will be formally announced later this month. The government does not comment on them beforehand. This article originally appeared on The Sun and was reproduced with permission. A season of promise derailed: Four things learnt in Reds' final defeat

The outside centre was about to play his first game in three months after suffering a ruptured hamstring, and since his comeback, the 23-year-old has hardly put a foot wrong. It began with his try-scoring return against the Fijian Drua last week before his exploits on Friday night threatened to get the Reds on thee front foot early. His well-weighted kick in behind the Crusaders while on the run to give his side a golden chance to build some pressure, and he followed it up with a linebreak and brilliant long ball to Lachie Anderson to present another opportunity. Flook was lauded by Wilson as 'our best player on the field tonight' – topping the Reds run metre count with 44 from six carries while beating three defenders, to keep him in the Test hunt to take on the Lions. Did injuries cruel Queensland's cause? This was a Queensland team clearly on its last legs, with their overflowing casualty ward forcing them to use 36 players this year. The Crusaders were clear victors in the territory battle. Rarely did they look flustered at the breakdown, and they were frequently able to exploit gaps behind the ruck. That much was evident as they scored through halfback Noah Hotham in the second half, darting and kicking behind after a pair of strong carries from his forward pack – winning the race to the punt ahead. By contrast, the Reds got too few opportunities to unleash their clinical backline, and appeared unable to string together a consistent run of phases to build momentum and field position to target their strengths. Loading On the sidelines Matt Faessler, Liam Wright, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Alex Hodgman and Massimo De Lutiis with injuries, but perhaps the biggest loss given how the contest played out was Seru Uru. Uru's unpredictability, late offloads and damaging ball carries would have injected some hesitancy in the Crusaders defence, with the Reds not showing some x-factor until it was too late – Harry Wilson's remarkable chip dived on by Frasere McReight to add some respectability to the score. Uru, who just missed out on recovering from a knee injury in time to take the field, has become one of the most innovative forwards in Australian rugby, with Reds and Wallabies lock Josh Canham alluding as much about his teammate's unique skillset. Where to now for the Reds? There is clearly a feeling within this Reds squad they are building towards something special, and Kiss' last season at the helm could be the time to prove it. Second-string halfback Kalani Thomas suggested as much upon his re-signing until the end of 2027 this week, when he hinted at having other options overseas to consider – where he may have had a better chance at starting rather than being stuck behind Tate McDermott. Thomas – who replaced McDermott with 20 minutes remaining – is not alone in extending his tenure at Ballymore, with fellow fringe star Richie Asiata, who became the club's leading hooker in the injury absences of Matt Faessler and Nasser, also signing for 2026 this week. Wallabies superstars Fraser McReight, Harry Wilson, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Filipo Daugunu, Seru Uru, Zane Nonggorr, Flook and Faessler were all joined by Jeffrey Toomaga-Allen and Joe Brial in securing their stay in Queensland. The reality, however, is that the Reds have finished in the same spot as they did last year – fifth, and a limp exit playing in New Zealand. But with other prospects such as Dre Pakeho, Nick Boomfield, Brial and De Lutiis making their mark, Kiss believed next year's outlook was a promising one to break this streak of early finals exits.
