Bride shot dead at wedding party in French village
A 27-year-old bride was shot to death as she left her wedding celebrations in a small French village in the early hours of Sunday.
Authorities have not released the woman's name. Her husband, 25, and a 13-year-old child were also seriously wounded in the attack, which took place at 4.30 a.m. local time (10.30 p.m. ET Saturday), according to a statement from local prosecutor Florence Galtier, published Sunday.
The couple were married on Saturday and celebrated with around 100 guests, before getting into a car to leave the venue in Goult, a village to the east of the city of Avignon in southeastern France.
'A vehicle pulled in behind them, blocking their way, with a number of hooded individuals on board,' the statement from the prosecutor said.
'These people then got out of the vehicle and started shooting in the direction of the victims, with what appear to be have been various different kinds of weapons,' it continues.
One of the assailants died in the attack, while the rest fled the scene on foot, according to the statement, which adds that another wedding guest was also slightly injured.
Prosecutors said autopsies are scheduled to be performed at the beginning of the week, and that they have launched an investigation on charges of murder committed by an organized criminal group and attempted murder as part of an organized criminal group.
Local mayor Didier Perello told CNN affiliate BFMTV that the shooting is unprecedented.
'Goult is a quiet village, which has never experienced events of this type. Twenty-four hours later, we are still in shock (…), it is above all anger that drives us today,' he said.
BFMTV also reported that a third person died overnight into Sunday in a separate shooting in Avignon, but it is not clear whether the two incidents are connected.

Attempted home invasion results in arrest; over $1,000 in damage to home
One man was arrested after an attempted home invasion in Oakland County, Michigan, the Bloomfield Township Police Department reported. The call to 911 was made about 1:40 a.m. Saturday from a resident near Quartron and Lasher roads who said a man was striking the home's front door with a knife and attempting to kick in the door. The caller added that the suspect was dressed all in black. When police arrived on scene, they found the suspect still on the front porch of the home. A knife was found on a window ledge near the front door. There was visible damage to the front door and its jam. The suspect, later identified as Peter Chan-Woong Chung, 37, of Birmingham, was placed under arrest for attempted home invasion-first degree. Chung had an arraignment hearing Sunday, where bond was set at $25,000 cash/surety/10%. He is due back in court July 3. Over $1,000 in property damage resulted from the incident, the report said.

Evidence in Karen Read's case led to ‘only one person,' prosecutor says in first statement since her acquittal
The special prosecutor who led the retrial of Karen Read is 'disappointed' in the jury's decision last week acquitting Read of killing her police officer boyfriend – saying Monday in his first statement since the verdict 'the evidence led to one person, and only one person.' 'I am disappointed in the verdict and the fact that we could not achieve justice for John O'Keefe and his family,' said Hank Brennan, who was appointed by the Norfolk County, Massachusetts, district attorney to retry the case against Read after her first trial ended with a hung jury. Read had been accused of drunkenly striking O'Keefe, a Boston cop, with her SUV on a wintry night in January 2022. But she was vindicated last week when her jury found Read not guilty of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Jurors did convict Read of drunken driving, for which she will serve one year of probation. Upon his appointment, Brennan – himself a well-known criminal defense attorney – was given 'full discretion to independently assess the case and follow the evidence no matter where it led,' he said. But neither his own review nor a federal investigation into the case that he says is closed yielded 'any other possible suspect or person responsible for the death of John O'Keefe,' his statement says. 'After an independent and thorough review of all the evidence, I concluded that the evidence led to one person, and only one person.' As she left the courthouse last week, Read thanked her supporters and told reporters, 'No one has fought harder for justice for John O'Keefe than I have.' While it's unclear whether the investigation into O'Keefe's death will continue, Read's defense attorneys in recent days have suggested more could be done: 'They charged the wrong person. But somebody's still out there,' David Yannetti told CNN affiliate WCVB. In his statement Monday, Brennan also lamented what he called the 'campaign of intimidation and abuse that has been waged, funded, and promoted in public and on social media,' saying it was 'the antithesis of justice.' 145 people pricked with syringes at France street music festival
French police detained 12 people on Sunday after 145 individuals reported being pricked with syringes during a nationwide street music festival, according to France's interior ministry. The attacks took place across France, with Paris police confirming at least 13 cases in the capital. According to the interior ministry, it remains unclear whether the cases of 'needle spiking' – in which attackers use syringes to inject victims typically in the arm, leg or buttocks – involved date-rape drugs such as Rohypnol or GHB, which can leave individuals disoriented, unconscious and vulnerable to assault. 'The ministry is taking this very seriously,' a spokeswoman from the interior ministry told CNN on Monday. 'Toxicology tests are being done and the investigation is ongoing.'
