Experts Debate on How Panthers Could Trade for Connor McDavid
Experts Debate on How Panthers Could Trade for Connor McDavid originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
The Florida Panthers just won their second straight Stanley Cup—and that didn't stop TSN's "Overdrive" panel of analysts from tossing around a blockbuster hypothetical involving Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid.

With the Oilers falling in the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive year to Florida, the trio of Bryan Hayes, Jeff O'Neill, and Jamie McLennan debated what kind of package it would take for the Panthers to land the league's best player in McDavid.
The hypothetical scenario, presented by Hayes as "pulling a Kevin Durant," sparked an interesting debate between the three panelists.
"(Center Sasha) Barkov, (defenseman Seth) Jones, and (goaltender Sergei) Bobrovsky," O'Neill said.
"But that's what — that's how idiotic this conversation is," Jamie McLennan interrupted.
"I love the way you dream this up, and then you yell at us for it," O'Neill replied.

Hayes pushed back, suggesting the idea isn't that far-fetched when factoring in McDavid's looming contract status and the Panthers' current championship window.
"It's just—it's gotta—it's a two-way street," Hayes said. "I mean, Florida is a great team. It's a hypothetical, but I don't think that's too much...
"McDavid could be the next Durant. Maybe he's Kevin Durant. Although Durant signed as a free agent."

For context, Durant decided to sign with the Golden State Warriors as a free agent once it became obvious he wouldn't win the title with the only team he'd played for before, the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Durant went on to win back-to-back championships in his first two seasons with the Warriors.
McLennan emphasized that any deal of this magnitude would need to touch all areas of the roster, which might not make sense for the Panthers as they'd dismantle what they've spent years building.
'I think if we're talking that silly, that's how silly the trade would look like,' McLennan said. 'It would have to be a goalie, a defenseman, and a forward. And it'd be their three best ones.'
McDavid, who has one year left on his eight-year, $100 million contract, will become eligible to sign an extension starting July 1. If he and the Oilers can reach an agreement before July 1, 2026, McDavid will then become an unrestricted free agent.

Perry forever the bridesmaid in ongoing search for second Stanley Cup
Always the bridesmaid, never a multiple Stanley Cup champion. And as far as relationships go, Corey Perry has to have a love-hate one going with the NHL's most prized possession at this point. A veteran of 20 NHL seasons — going back to when the team that drafted him 28th overall in 2003 was still calling itself the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim — Perry tasted victory from Lord Stanley's Mug during his sophomore season in the league back in 2006-07. And he hasn't been without his chances lately when it comes to securing a second. Fast-forward to these playoffs, which saw Perry hit his 40th birthday milestone, and he has reached the Stanley Cup Final for the fifth time in the past six years. Aside from falling in back-to-back finals with the Oilers, Perry was runner-up in 2021-22 with the Tampa Bay Lightning, 2020-21 with the Montreal Canadiens and 2019-20 with the Dallas Stars. That's five Stanley Cup eliminations in a span of six years with four different teams for a player during a span of his career where most are left wishing they could still be playing. 'Yeah, it's devastating. I mean, five of the last six, it doesn't get any easier,' Perry said. 'It just doesn't feel real. 'But you get ready and you move on and you get ready for next season. Hopefully, you have that opportunity to do it again.' Maybe one day, when the dust has settled on his career, Perry will be able to see it as a pretty amazing ride. 'Maybe in 10 years when I look back,' he said. 'Whenever I'm done playing.' But he's not at that point just yet, as he's already turned his attention to next season. 'I just want to win,' said Perry, who was on a one-year, $1.4-million contract. 'Hopefully it's here and hopefully we can figure something out and get something done, because this is a good team and there are some good things ahead.' Chelsea boss Maresca 'trusts' Mudryk after doping charge
Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca is preparing his side to face Flamengo in the Club World Cup on Friday (John MACDOUGALL) Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca said Thursday he still maintained trust in Mykhailo Mudryk after the Ukrainian winger was charged by England's Football Association with violating anti-doping rules, but confirmed the club were looking to strengthen in his position. "'Mischa' is a Chelsea player. As long as he is a Chelsea player, I will trust all the Chelsea players," Maresca told reporters in Philadelphia ahead of his team's Club World Cup meeting with Flamengo on Friday. Advertisement Mudryk has not played for Chelsea since November 28 following his provisional suspension by the FA for an "adverse finding in a routine urine test" in December. He could face a potential ban of up to four years under FA rules. Mudryk is not with the Chelsea squad for the tournament in the United States and Maresca said he has had no contact with the player since the UEFA Conference League final win over Real Betis in Poland late last month. "The last time I spoke with 'Mischa' was in Poland and he was quite good. "Since that day I have not spoken with him so I don't know how he is now but for sure in the next days, in the next weeks, we are going to have contact with him." Advertisement Mudryk was signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for 100 million euros ($115m) but his time at Chelsea has been dogged by inconsistency, with erratic performances only occasionally off-set by flashes of his ability. He has scored just 10 goals in 73 appearances in all competitions for the Blues. - Wary of Flamengo - Maresca revealed that he is hoping to sign a new wide attacker before the start of the Premier League season. "We had already one entire season almost without 'Mischa', last season, and we tried to find different solutions with some of the academy players, like Tyrique (George), but we are going to decide to go for a winger, and not because of 'Mischa'," Maresca said. Advertisement "It is quite clear that it is a position that we need to improve." Chelsea can expect to face challenging conditions on Friday against Flamengo, with heat and humidity rising in Philadelphia in recent days and the match kicking off at 2:00 pm local time. The game is likely to be key in deciding who tops Group D with both teams fresh from winning 2-0 in their opening match at the tournament -- Chelsea got the better of Los Angeles FC in Atlanta while Flamengo defeated Esperance. Maresca said the conditions could favour the Brazilian giants and added that he would make several changes to his line-up -- the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Malo Gusto and new signing Liam Delap are among those pushing for starts. Advertisement "It is not easy because of the temperature. This is the reason why we are going to try to rotate players," the coach added. "Unfortunately for us Brazilian teams are more used to playing with this kind of temperature, but it doesn't matter, we will try to do our best and win the game." Flamengo, coached by former Atletico Madrid and Chelsea player Filipe Luis, are top of the Brazilian league and have lost only one of their last 16 outings in all competitions. "They are a very good team, they play nice football, it is nice to watch them," Maresca said. "They have many good players. Watching them, you realise they are a very good team, very good organisation. "Like any Brazilian team they are full of quality, technical players, and we will need to be at our best to win the game." as/ea

Phillies place Aaron Nola on 60-day IL, call up Buddy Kennedy and send Weston Wilson to Triple-A
MIAMI — The Philadelphia Phillies moved right-hander Aaron Nola to the 60-day injured list on Thursday, a week after he injured his ribcage while trying to work himself back from a sprained right ankle. Nola had been out since early May with the ankle injury. He experienced stiffness in his right side last week in Toronto that wiped out a planned session against live batters, and an MRI showed a stress reaction in his right ribcage. Nola, who is in the second season of a seven-year, $172 million contract , is 105-86 with a 3.78 ERA in 11 seasons with the Phillies, making six straight opening day starts from 2018-23. He was 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA in nine starts this year before injuring his ankle on May 8 during pregame agility drills. The Phillies selected the contract of infielder Buddy Kennedy from Triple-A Lehigh Valley before Thursday's game against the Miami Marlins and optioned infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson to the IronPigs. Kennedy, 26, is batting .283 with eight homers and 40 RBIs in 61 games for Lehigh Valley this season and was the International League Player of the Month for May. In 54 major league games over three seasons with the Diamondbacks, Tigers and Phillies, he has batted .203 with two homers and 19 RBIs. Wilson batted .194 with one home run and 4 RBIs in 22 games for the Phillies this season. ___ AP MLB:
