‘You expect India to be here, but same could be said of South Africa too': Pat Cummins on WTC final

Indian Express2 days ago

Australia captain Pat Cummins has said he expected India to be in the World Test Championship final while brushing aside any notion that South Africa had an easy way to the showpiece event set to begin at Lord's from Wednesday. Having already won the 50-over World Cup and a WTC final in succession, Cummins has the opportunity to make history by becoming the first captain to win successive WTC.
Defending champions Australia start as firm favourites against South Africa and Cummins when asked if he was surprised about the opponent for the final said, 'In some ways you expect India to be around. England have been quite strong at home and New Zealand always seem to get to finals. But the same case could be made for South Africa in ICC events. We just don't see a lot of them in Test cricket but it's nice and different to an Australia-India final.'
Soon after South Africa qualified for the final, former England captain Michael Vaughan ridiculed their road to Lord's saying they beat a team of nobodies pointing to the fact that they didn't play Australia and England in the current WTC cycle. But Cummins chose to keep aside all of it. 'You can only beat who you come up against. Our route to the final was pretty tough but I don't blame South Africa for having a different route,' Cummins said.
Coming into the final, there is a bit of unknown about how these two teams which enjoy a storied rivalry would face-off at Lord's and Cummins said he expects nothing less from South Africa. 'It's hard to say because there are so many unknowns. We haven't played them much [with their last Test series ending in an easy Australian victory at home in 2022-23] but you've got to be really well balanced to make the final. Their bowling has always stood out and it's no different now. [Keshav] Maharaj is a really solid spinner and they've always got plenty of quick bowlers who pose a challenge.'
A win at Lord's would also be a high point for Australia's attack which includes the famous four of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and Cummins. The upcoming Ashes could well turn out to be the last time all four could play and the Lord's final is certainly the first big match all the four will feature in. 'We've got quite a few players who are past their mid-30s and there seems to be a natural attrition rate into the late‑30s. If you'd asked me a year or two ago I would have said: 'It's going to be a huge change. There's a little bit to be worried about.' But we've seen Josh Inglis, Sam Konstas, [Nathan] McSweeney debut throughout [Australia's] summer. [Beau] Webster's come in plus a few others have debuted in white-ball cricket. I don't think the transition will be as jarring as we first thought,' Cummins added.

WTC Final: Steve Smith embarrassed at being dismissed by part-timer Aiden Markram

Steve Smith was not pleased with his dismissal against Aiden Markram on Day 1 of the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2025, after putting in yet another impressive performance at Lord's against South premier batter ended up scoring a crucial 66 off 112 deliveries. His knock, laced with 10 boundaries, put the Aussies back in the contest after the top-order failed to provide a start. Despite looking set for yet another big score at the venue, he ended up being dismissed by the part-time bowler, Aiden Markram, in the 42nd to drive a tossed-up delivery, Smith ended up getting the edge, which carried to the slip fielder. Following the day's play, Smith was asked how he would approach the second innings, and the Aussie had a hilarious response in the press conference."Don't nick the part-time off-spinner. Down the slope. I'm still trying to fathom how I've done that. But yeah, don't do that. And then, no, I don't know. Just play what's in front of us," Smith on the conditions in the coming days, Smith reckons that the surface could dry up a bit more, with the bounce fluctuating a bit as well. He hopes that the Australian side can get a few more wickets on the second day to put them in the driver's seat to retain the WTC title."It might take a bit more spin as the game wears on. It's pretty dry. I don't know, the seam might go down as the game goes on as well, potentially. So, I think the bounce is going to be variable throughout the game, as we've seen already on day one. So, just play what's in front of us," he shared."And, yeah, hopefully we can get a few early ones in the morning and sort of go through them and have a bit of a lead. That's the ideal scenario for us right now," he four wickets already taken, Australia are on top in the contest at the end of the opening day. But South Africa is known to showcase resilience and is desperate to have their first major Test crown. But, they will have a tough task of dethroning the Aussies, who are known to be tough opposition in the big games.

Kohli Warned This 'X' Account To Stop Abusing Him, 14 Years Later This Happened

Last Updated: Virat Kohli, in a 2011 'X' post, had warned a user named Ishaan to stop using abusive language to the cricketer. Indian cricketer Virat Kohli knows how to give back to trolls – on the field or off it. Kohli's aggressive approach has helped him keep the troublemakers at bay but even the most celebrated cricketer in India couldn't do much except to issue a warning directly to an 'X' (formerly known as Twitter) user, asking the account to stop using foul language and abusing him. This was back in 2011. 'your account has been reported and will be deactivated soon. dont tweet if u wana use foul language (sic)," Kohli, tagging the X user, wrote. The account, which went by the username of Ishaan, routinely returned with jibes at Kohli by making appearances under Kohli's original post. @ishaan3 your account has been reported and will be deactivated soon. dont tweet if u wana use foul language.— Virat Kohli (@imVkohli) December 6, 2011 Er. Ishaan A year after Kohli issued the warning, Ishaan returned to the post in 2012 asking the cricketer how he was doing. Not the one to let it go, Ishaan, returning to the thread in 2016, informed Kohli that his account was intact even after five years since the incident. A year later, in 2017, laughing at the absurdity of it all, Ishaan made yet another comeback letting the Indian batter know that he was still around and thriving. After a hiatus of four years, the purported abusive account returned to 'X' to mark the 10th anniversary of Kohli's OG warning post. 'It has been 11 years even today I am active," he wrote in a post the following year. Ishaan Suspended In a surprising turn of events, the account has been suspended on the Elon Musk-owned social media platform. (X/Screengrab) Upon clicking on Ishaan's handle, X informs users that the account has been suspended for violating the guidelines of the platform. End Of An Era X users got the whiff of Ishaan's departure and they heaved a sigh of relief that the one-sided beef had finally concluded. Finally suspended 😭🤣 — Wellu (@Wellutwt) June 11, 2025 X's longest rivalry had finally ended, many remarked. 'ishaan survived for 14 years but Kohli has the last laugh. A long twitter rivalry ended, (sic)" a user, responding to the suspension message on Ishaan's now-defunct X account wrote. Meanwhile, Kohli found several mentions on Wednesday after the World Test Championship final commenced between South Africa and Australia. Lord's Cricket Ground, the chosen venue for the big event, saw packed stands and fans from various cricketing nations cheering on as Day 1 of the much-awaited Test turned out to be an eventual one. Trolls mocked Kohli's fans who had wondered if the cricket and Test-loving community would take the same amount of interest in the red-ball game as they did when Kohli played in all whites for India. Kohli bid farewell to the Tests on May 12, 2025. He featured in 123 Test matches and scored 9,230 runs that comprised 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. He had a batting average of 46.9. AUS vs SA Live Score, WTC Final 2025: Australia on top as South Africa trail by 169 Runs - The Times of India

Australia vs South Africa Live Score, ICC WTC Final 2025: Day 1 of the World Test Championship Final at Lord's belonged to the bowlers as Australia and South Africa exchanged blows in an intense, low-scoring start to the five-day clash. With overcast skies and a helpful pitch, 14 wickets tumbled for just 255 runs, but by stumps, it was Australia who had edged ahead in this high-stakes encounter. After being sent in to bat, Australia slumped to 212 despite gritty knocks from Beau Webster (72) and Steve Smith (66), the only batters all day to go past 23. South Africa's bowling attack made full use of the seam-friendly conditions. Kagiso Rabada led the charge with a superb 5 for 51, while Marco Jansen chipped in with 3 for 49. Rabada's mastery of the Lord's slope was on full display, dismissing Usman Khawaja for a duck and debut No.3 Cameron Green in the same over. But Australia's response with the ball was even more decisive. Mitchell Starc removed both openers inside the first six overs, and Pat Cummins added two more to leave South Africa reeling at 43 for 4. Wiaan Mulder's resistance ended on 6, and Tristan Stubbs managed just 2 before Hazlewood dismantled his stumps. Only Temba Bavuma (3* off 37) and David Bedingham (12*) offered some end-of-day resistance. Australia's lower-than-expected total now appears competitive, thanks to their potent pace trio. Starc's swing, Hazlewood's accuracy, and Cummins' hostility exposed South Africa's vulnerabilities under pressure. Webster, reflecting on the day, credited the bowlers: 'We know if we don't quite get it done with the bat, our bowlers will.' South Africa, meanwhile, will reflect on a day of missed chances, including a dropped catch by Alex Carey that could have sent Mulder back even earlier. Bavuma's decision to bowl first was justified by Rabada and Jansen's early inroads, but now the onus lies on the batters to claw back into the match on Day 2. As both teams look to assert dominance in this tight contest, Day 2 promises to be just as gripping. Can South Africa's middle order stand firm? Or will Australia continue their charge towards defending the mace? All eyes remain on Lord's.
