Rangers to face lower-ranked side in Champions League draw

BBC News6 hours ago

Russell Martin faces a tough competitive debut as Rangers head coach - and on Wednesday he will find out if his new side face Brann, Panathinaikos or Servette in the second qualifying round of the Champions League. The new Ibrox boss, whose side are seeded for the draw, needs to come through three stages if he is to manage in Europe's elite club competition next season. On paper, Panathinaikos would provide the toughest test, the Greek side being 111th in the European club rankings, 86 places behind Rangers, with Servette 139th (one behind Hearts) and Brann 189th.The Athens side have never lost to Scottish opponents over 90 minutes in four meetings with Rangers, two with Motherwell and one with Aberdeen, winning four of their seven games. However, it was Rangers who progressed when they last met the Ibrox side. The furthest Servette have progressed in the Champions League, meanwhile, is the third qualifying round, where they were beaten by Rangers after a 1-1 draw in Switzerland followed a 2-1 loss at Ibrox. In their only other meeting with a Scottish side, they lost by a single goal to Aberdeen in the European Cup second round in 1985.Last season, they were ousted by Chelsea in the Conference League play-off round after beating Braga.Rangers' final potential opponents, Brann, have only once qualified for group-stage football - back in 2007 in the Uefa Cup.Last season, the Bergen side beat Go Ahead Eagles in the Conference League second qualifying round, then defeated St Mirren 4-2 on aggregate after a 3-1 win in Norway, before losing to Astana in the play-off round.Whichever of the three sides they face, Rangers will begin their campaign on 22/23 and 29/30 July.Emerge victorious and they will be in the Champions League third qualifying draw on 21 July. Lose and it will be the same stage of the Europa League.

Forget the king as another ‘Charlie' rules for Glasgow gang at Ascot

There are places whose very names evoke the racing game; Epsom, Newmarket, Cheltenham, York and Melbourne for the Cup. But until the five-year-old speedball American Affair battled home in the King Charles III Stakes, it had not normally been associated with Glasgow. Yet American Affair is trained 15 miles south of the city by the splendidly unreconstructed Jim Goldie and bred just to the north from one of the two mares of owners John and Wendy McGrandles. 'He's probably the only horse here with a Glasgow postcode in his passport!' McGrandles said. 'I've been involved with horses since I was six. My wife is a veterinary surgeon — and we're off to the Highland Show tomorrow with sheep. This horse is the biggest winner we've had, yes. And the horse's stable name is Charlie and he's won the King Charles!'

Arsenal refuse to meet Benjamin Sesko demands after 'freezing' Gyokeres move

RB Leipzig are demanding up to €100million (£86m) for Benjamin Sesko this summer – demands Arsenal are refusing to meet. Signing a new centre forward has been a top priority for the Gunners with Sesko and Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres identified as their leading targets. Arsenal have explored a move for Gyokeres but a bitter row between the Sweden international and his club has threatened to derail any move. Sesko is reportedly Mikel Arteta's first choice target to lead his attack next season but the club are still to make an official offer for the 22-year-old. Sky Sports Germany report Leipzig's asking price now stands at a fee between €80m and €100m (£69m to £86m), a price Arsenal are not currently prepared to pay. The club have remained in contact with Sesko's camp but there is also still no full agreement over personal terms. While Sesko is 'attracted to the possibility' of playing for Arsenal with Champions League football also on offer, the striker is said to be relaxed over the situation and will not attempt to force a move to north London. Arsenal have long-standing interest in Sesko, opting against a move in January due to a gentleman's agreement with Leipzig to allow him to stay at the German side until at least the summer. The Slovenia international was also close to leaving last summer but opted to sign a new contract, removing a previous release clause of £55m. Arsenal meanwhile have also been exploring a move for Gyokeres, who has become embroiled in a bitter feud with Sporting over a proposed transfer fee for the player. Sporting president Frederico Varandas has denied the existence of an agreement that would have allowed Gyokeres to leave the club for a fee of €60 plus €10m in add-ons this summer, much to the frustration of the striker and his agent Hasan Cetinkaya. More Trending Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with Sporting officials last week to discuss a deal. Arsenal's initial proposal worth an €55m (£46.8m) plus a further €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons was rejected but an improved offer was expected. However, the ongoing row between Sporting, Gyokeres and his agent and the uncertainty over what fee it would take to prise him from Lisbon has promoted Arsenal to 'freeze' their pursuit, according to latest reports in Portugal. Max Aarons watched his dream move to Barcelona collapse & it didn't faze him – he'd thrive at Rangers says ex-Celtic ace

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MICHAEL McGOVERN stood behind Max Aarons when he made his professional debut as an unknown teenager. Just a fortnight later, the keeper looked on in awe as the defender truly kick-started his career with his first goal for Norwich City. That's why the ex-Celtic goalie reckons his former Canaries team-mate is ideally suited for a leading role in Russell Martin's Rangers revolution. McGovern told SunSport: 'I was there when Max made his debut against Stevenage, and also when he scored his first goal against Cardiff. 'He's a good boy and I used to sit beside him in the dressing room. He was always well thought of at Norwich. 'Max was in a group of young players like Jamal Lewis, Ben Godfrey and Todd Cantwell — up-and-coming boys who were destined to move on to great things. There was a lot of talk of them all moving on to bigger clubs. Max probably moved on last, even though there was a lot of interest in him.' The most high-profile interest came from the continent, with Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen both watching Aarons. But Barca boss Ronald Koeman was first to make his move, with the loan deal five years ago only collapsing due to the fact there was no obligation to buy at the end of it. McGovern added: 'I know for a fact that Barcelona offered to take him on loan a few years ago. They were struggling financially at the time, and couldn't sign players permanently in that window. 'Max had probably stayed at Norwich a season or two longer than he should have for his own development. He eventually moved to Bournemouth when Norwich were relegated. 'If Barca try to take you on loan but your club says, 'No', a lot of players would have gone kicking and screaming to the owner, sporting director, or the people who make the decisions. Rangers captain James Tavernier spotted training with ex-team-mate and old Premiership rival Ryan Porteous who branded him 'bad loser' 'Some players would have said they are not playing or not training properly. 'But Max didn't do any of that when the move fell through. It's all credit to him and his character. 'As much as he was really disappointed, he just got his head down and worked hard.' Former England Under-21 cap Aarons — who looks set to join Gers on loan — finally left Carrow Road for the Cherries in a £7million deal. He starred in the Premier League again, before falling out of favour with boss Andoni Iraola and he headed out on loan to Valencia. McGovern said: 'Max went for £7m in the end, but at that stage he only had a year left on his contract at Norwich. I'm pretty sure there were offers in previous seasons of a lot more than £7m. 'If he goes to Rangers, they are signing a player who still has a lot of potential. 'That's obvious given Max has moved for £7m and his club knocked back even bigger offers previously. 'He has maybe lost his way a little bit in the last year or two — but that's because he hasn't played so much football. 3 'Clubs in Scotland probably wouldn't get a player with as much potential if the circumstances were different. 'But Rangers would be getting a player who just needs someone to show belief in him. 'If they do that with Max, I'm sure he will repay their faith with some top-quality performances.' Cherries right-back Aarons — who can also play on the left — is likely to join on loan and will present a challenge to Gers skipper James Tavernier. He was out of favour at the Vitality Stadium and spent the second part of last season in La Liga, although he started only two games for Valencia. Now 25, Aarons spoke recently of the influence former Norwich captain Martin had on his career as a teenager. Despite never playing together in the Canaries' first team, he has described the Gers gaffer as a 'father figure'. McGovern, who spent seven years with Norwich, said: 'Towards the end of his time at the club, Russ was put in the reserves and had to train with the Under-23s. Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers 'Max was in the Under-23s at the time and that was when their paths crossed. He has spoken in the past about the captain training with them. 'It could have been a dent to his pride, but Russ carried himself in the right manner — as he always did — and that stuck with Max. 'I still stay in touch with him. I always got on really well with him at Norwich and he's just a great lad. 'I really hope that he starts to play a lot of games next season for Rangers.' McGovern thought Aarons and Martin would have been reunited long before a potential reunion at Ibrox this summer. The former Northern Ireland No 1 added: 'I'm pretty sure Russ was interested in signing Max back when he was the Southampton manager. 'There was talk of Kyle Walker-Peters leaving the club and Max coming in to replace him, but it just never happened.' Aarons returned to the Cherries last month after his short spell in Spain. It included a 2-1 win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu when he went toe to toe with Vinicius Jr. But it also saw Valencia lose 7-1 at champions Barca, with Aarons now looking set for a reunion with father figure Martin in Glasgow.
