'Champions' Queen win 2025 Polar Music Prize
British rock band Queen, American jazz pianist Herbie Hancock and Canadian soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan were awarded the 2025 Polar Music Prize on Tuesday.
The Polar Prize hailed Queen for their "distinctive and instantly recognizable sound that no one else can emulate".
"Queen were not exaggerating when they sang 'We are the Champions'," it said in a statement, Reuters reported.
Queen have sold more than 300 million albums featuring songs such as "We Will Rock You", "Another One Bites The Dust" and "Bohemian Rhapsody".
Founded in 1970, the band featured flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury, guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor and bass player John Deacon. They played stadiums across the world - including a memorable performance at the Live Aid concert in 1985 - before Mercury's death in 1991.
They relaunched in 2004 with a succession of new singers.
Queen share the prize with American jazz pianist Herbie Hanckock, a collaborator of Miles Davies among others as well as a solo star in his own right, and Canadian soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan.
Founded in 1989 by Stig Anderson, publisher and manager of the Swedish band ABBA, previous winners include Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Sting, Elton John and Metallica.

In early 2024, Sonder joined FlyQuest RED, remaining with them for over a year before announcing her decision to retire. The team issued a heartfelt farewell message to her: "Thank you, Sonder, for your time with us at RED and Game Changers. Your impact on the team and the scene as a whole has been incredible. You willbegreatlymissed." Sonder's final appearance was on May 2–3 at the Red Bull Instalock event, which took place at the Red Bull Gaming Sphere in London. Sesame Street heads to Netflix after Trump pulled funding
NEW YORK — Sesame Street and Netflix have struck a deal that will see the popular TV show appear on the streaming platform after US President Donald Trump pulled funding for the free-to-air channel PBS. Netflix said the iconic program is a "beloved cornerstone of children's media, enchanting young minds and nurturing a love of learning". From later this year, Netflix will offer its 300 million subscribers a new season of the show and 90 hours of previous episodes, while still being available on PBS. Sesame Street was also facing an uncertain future after entertainment giant Warner Bros Discovery, which owns the HBO platform, did not renew its deal with the half a century old program. Earlier this month, Trump issued an executive order to block federal funding for PBS and radio network NPR, alleging they engaged in "biased and partisan news coverage". The government body Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which backed the two broadcasters, has since announced the termination of a federal initiative which funded shows for children, including Sesame Street. Under the deal, PBS will get access to Sesame Street episodes on the same day they are released on Netflix. In the late 1960s, Sesame Street co-founders Lloyd Morrisett and Joan Ganz Cooney approached Harvard University's Graduate School of Education with a novel way of teaching American children. A team led by a developmental psychologist worked with the Sesame founders to analyse childhood psychology and produce entertaining lessons.
