Jurassic World: Rebirth Director Reveals Ridley Scott Movie That Inspired The Sequel (And It's Not Alien)

Ridley Scott's fingerprint can be seen on pretty much every great sci-fi movie that has come out since his 1979 space horror film Alien changed the game. Many filmmakers have been influenced by his movies over the years, including Gareth Edwards, whose upcoming Jurassic World: Rebirth is about to make another addition to the Jurassic Park franchise. However, it wasn't Alien that inspired the new sequel.
Ahead of the premiere of one of the biggest releases on the 2025 movie schedule, Edwards sat down for a chat with SFX Magazine (via ComicBook.com) to discuss his upcoming sci-fi thriller and where he took inspiration from to bring the dinosaur blockbuster to the big screen. During that conversation, the Godzilla and Rogue One director revealed that it was Scott's 2005 historical drama, Kingdom of Heaven, that inspired him greatly, specifically when it came to the director of photography:
John Mathieson was the director of photography, and the more and more I looked at it, the more I was like, 'This is perfection.' There's not a bad frame in this movie. I've always had this love for his work.
Mahieson, who first worked with Scott on the 2000 Best Picture winner Gladiator, has collaborated with the famed filmmaker multiple times over the years, including most recently with Gladiator II. His work on Kingdom of Heaven, a great movie that somehow flopped at the box office, is honestly some of his best work.
Based on Edwards' comments, he really wanted to work with the man who gave Kingdom of Heaven such a captivating look and feel, but he had to work with Universal to get the ball rolling, as he revealed:
When you start a film like this, you have a group of names you'd like to work with, and the studio have a group of names they would trust. Then there's Steven [Spielberg] as well in the middle of that. There was this one little overlap where they all intersected, and everyone agreed on Mathieson.
Luckily, everyone agreed on bringing in Mathieson to serve as the director of photography for Jurassic World: Rebirth. Though it's unlikely there will be any flashbacks to the new mutated Distortus Rex (which was inspired by Alien) fighting off waves of Crusaders, it will be interesting to see how the two-time Academy Award nominee and prolific music video cinematographer handles the latest dinosaur movie.
With the release of Jurassic World: Rebirth right around the corner in theaters on July 2, 2025, it will be interesting to see what other tidbits of information about the movie and its influences Gareth Edwards and others share with us all. If anything, I'm curious to see what those claims that the movie will honor the series' canon mean for the big blockbuster.
In the meantime, all six previous Jurassic Park/World movies are streaming with a Peacock subscription. And while Kingdom of Heaven isn't currently streaming anywhere, it's worth seeking it out for the epic's 20th anniversary.

Following reports of the deaths in the crowd, Scott said that he was 'absolutely devastated' and later said he thinks about what happens 'every day.' Civil lawsuits were later filed by the families of the victims. Earlier at last weekend's show, Johnson told fans that over the past few years he had 'grown tired of ... watching the news media and people in politics try to divide us when we don't need to be divided.' 'Do you know why it's okay sometimes to disagree with your fellow American, on anything?' he asked. 'Because before most of us were born, an American soldier gave his or her life to have the freedom to disagree in the United States.' After the brawling men were removed from the venue, he reportedly quipped: 'Well, there goes my speech about unity.'

Gareth Edwards Sees ‘Jurassic World Rebirth' as a Metaphor for the Film Industry
Gareth Edwards knows a thing or two about sci-fi films. And whether he's creating his own unique worlds, like Monsters or The Creator, or working in someone else's, like Godzilla or Rogue One, the director thinks one thing links the entire genre together. '[Sci-fi] films are never really about spaceships, robots or dinosaurs,' he told io9. 'They feel pointless if they are. They [only] have meaning when the whole thing is kind of an analogy for something else.' So, what is Edwards' latest film, Jurassic World Rebirth, an analogy for? While not immediately obvious, Edwards found something he really connected with as he was getting ready to approach the material, and it helped inspire him throughout. 'As a sci-fi storyteller, you're always looking for 'What's the hidden metaphor for whatever the crazy sci-fi element is?'' Edwards said. 'So I kind of went through this a bit going, 'What is this really about? What's this story really about as a mythical thing that you keep in your pocket?' And it felt to me like the dinosaurs were kind of like films.' Yes, the dinosaurs are films. Let's let him continue. 'The idea of people sort of slowly not going to the cinema, you know what I mean?' Edwards said. 'They started trying different things to make them more entertaining, they mutated them, they created this stuff that people can't watch or look at. And I kind of felt like this, in a weird way I was getting a kick out of, it was some strange version of the situation we're in as filmmakers, where, like, how do you get people excited about this stuff again? And then it got interesting for me when you can find the meat on the bone. The science fiction of it all.' Edwards, of course, is alluding to a bunch of things. The decline of movie theaters. The rise of streaming. YouTube. Twitch. And so on. But it also applies to the Jurassic franchise on screen and off. When the original Jurassic Park was released, audiences were completely wowed by the dazzling special effects. But, in the decades since, effects like that have become the norm and audiences want more. Then, in the 2015 movie specifically, the first of the latest trilogy, the story centers on a dinosaur carefully designed to get bored audiences interested in them again. Now, by Jurassic World Rebirth, dinosaurs are just an everyday part of life that get taken for granted. Like these big, blockbuster movies. So, Edwards wanted to use his film to build off that. 'My first movie was a monster movie set in Central America and all that, and the way I sold it to everyone back then was it begins where all other monster movies end,' he said. 'It was supposed to be like, at the end of King Kong, King Kong falls onto the middle of New York and dies… Imagine a movie where they're now trying to tidy that up and clean it up. How do you move King Kong out of the way for traffic? And it was funny, I've always enjoyed that as a starting point. [One person's] end is a start for someone else. And when I started reading the script, I was like, 'Oh, this is like that kind of film I really enjoy, which is dealing with the ending of another movie.'' Jonathan Bailey Reveals He Has a Clarinet Solo in 'Jurassic World Rebirth': 'The Nerd in Me Erupted Like Vesuvius'

As Bailey recalled, Rebirth director Gareth Edwards told him they'd be recording Alexandre Desplat's new score (incorporating some from John Williams' iconic original) at nearby Abbey Road Studios. And once he arrived, "I sat with my mate at the top just to watch, and got goosebumps" as he took in the "105-piece world-class orchestra," the Bridgerton star told host Jimmy Fallon. That wish-granting came to fruition (and then some) when a clarinet solo came up. Bailey admitted he was at first hesitant and declined Desplat's offer to play while being surrounded by "world-class musicians" — but he felt immediate regret. So once another clarinet solo came up, "[Desplat] said, 'It's now or never.' And I just went, 'Okay, let's do it.'
