Avoiding overreliance on AI in higher education — Jehana Ermy Jamaluddin

MAY 21 — Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming higher education, offering new tools for teaching, learning and assessment. From adaptive learning platforms to automated grading systems and AI-generated feedback, the appeal of efficiency and scalability is undeniable. However, alongside these benefits lies a growing concern: the risk of overreliance. When algorithms begin to overshadow academic judgment and interpersonal engagement, the core mission of education which is fostering critical thinking, reflection, and human connection, can be compromised.
The challenge is not whether to use AI, but how to integrate it without allowing it to replace pedagogical intent. Teaching is not simply the transmission of content; it is a dynamic, relational process shaped by context, empathy, and professional intuition. Overdependence on AI tools can unintentionally narrow learning experiences. Students might begin to rely on generative tools to complete tasks without engaging with underlying concepts. Educators, in turn, may be tempted to adopt AI suggestions without exercising their own academic judgment, especially under pressure to deliver content quickly or manage large cohorts. This can result in more passive learning, reduced intellectual curiosity, and a loss of creative teaching practices.
To stay grounded in pedagogy, educators must remain at the centre of instructional decisions. AI tools should be seen as support systems and not decision-makers. For example, many universities use adaptive platforms like Coursera or Moodle that recommend learning pathways based on student performance. While helpful, these systems are most effective when lecturers intervene to adjust recommendations based on their knowledge of the students and the broader learning goals. When educators actively shape the AI-enhanced experience, they ensure that learning is personal, inclusive, and meaningful.
AI can also be used to enrich and not to restrict student choice. Too often, AI systems predict what students should learn next and create narrow content funnels that limit exposure to diverse topics. A student performing poorly in algorithmic thinking, for instance, might be repeatedly directed to basic exercises in data structures. Yet a thoughtful instructor might identify that the same student can engage with real-world problems like AI bias or ethical computing, thus broadening their learning journey. By stepping in, educators help students stretch beyond algorithmic assumptions, encouraging intellectual risk-taking and confidence.

One effective way to embed AI ethically is through reflective learning models. Rather than using AI to provide definitive answers, educators can frame it as a thinking partner. In a humanities class, for example, students could use a generative AI tool to draft the structure of a persuasive essay, then critically evaluate the logic and underlying assumptions. This method not only builds AI literacy but also reinforces skills in argumentation, critique, and self-awareness. Similarly, in engineering or business courses, students might be asked to compare AI-generated solutions to case studies with their own, reflecting on differences in reasoning and ethical implications.
Institutions also play a critical role in shaping a balanced approach. Clear guidelines around acceptable use of AI should be developed collaboratively across departments. These frameworks can help ensure consistency while respecting the specific needs of different disciplines. Equally important is building AI literacy across the academic community. Faculty development programmes and classroom resources on how AI works; and where it falls short, empower both educators and students to engage with these tools thoughtfully and responsibly. Some universities have taken the lead by creating interdisciplinary 'Teaching with AI' task forces. These groups review emerging technologies, propose ethical standards, and help integrate AI into pedagogy without sacrificing academic integrity.
Perhaps the most important strategy to avoid overreliance is the regular evaluation of learning impact. Rather than focusing solely on performance metrics generated by AI tools, institutions should review whether students are genuinely engaging with content, developing higher-order thinking, and participating actively in their own learning. This might involve classroom observations, student feedback, and peer reflection to ensure that AI is supporting and not replacing meaningful educational experiences.
AI undoubtedly has a place in the future of higher education. Its ability to support personalised learning, provide rapid feedback, and assist with routine tasks can benefit both students and educators. But its value depends entirely on how we use it. If treated as a shortcut, AI can lead to shallow learning and disengagement. If used with intention and pedagogical care, it can enhance creativity, reflection, and depth.
The goal is not to teach through AI, but to teach with it. That means reaffirming the role of educators as designers of learning experiences and mentors in students' intellectual journeys. It means treating AI as an assistant that extends human capabilities and not as a replacement for human connection. As institutions move forward, the guiding principle should remain clear: technology may shape the future, but it is pedagogy that defines its purpose.

'In conjunction with the association's 50th anniversary, various activities will be held, including donations to selected welfare bodies. The highlight of the celebration will be a gala dinner to mark SAS's 50th anniversary, where Toh Puan will be the guest of honor,' she told the media after paying a courtesy visit to Faridah at Istana Seri Kinabalu. Belinda explained that the visit aimed to introduce SAS's committee members to Faridah and brief her on the association's upcoming activities. She said SAS is a collective of secretaries serving in federal, state, and private sectors in Sabah. 'Initially, this association had only 63 members, but over the years, membership has grown, and SAS now has over 100 registered members.' 'The purpose of establishing this association is to unite secretaries across Sabah while helping members enhance their skills and knowledge to improve the quality of their services.' 'We also welcome all secretaries in Sabah to join the association, regardless of age,' she said. Additionally, Belinda urged all secretaries to equip themselves with knowledge and skills to face advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. KUALA LUMPUR, June 4 — Two Malaysian primary school students made national headlines by winning gold and the Best Young Inventor Excellence Award (Primary Level) at the World Young Invention Exhibition, part of the recent International Invention, Innovation, and Technology Exhibition 2025 (ITEX 2025). The brothers, Mohammad Parsa Parhizkar (12) and Mohammad Rohan Parhizkar (9) from Sekolah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Presint 8-1, clinched the prestigious 'Best Young Inventor Excellence Award (Primary Level),' outshining 144 participants from 55 national and international schools across Malaysia. The invention won a gold medal under the World Young Inventors Exhibition category and received the Best Young Inventor Award (Primary Level). Their innovative project, Minedu AI – an Intelligent Minecraft Learning Assistant – seamlessly integrates Artificial Intelligence into Minecraft to transform the game into a powerful educational platform aligned with Malaysia's primary school syllabus. This invention empowers students to learn Science, Biology, Geography, and more — through interactive, AI-driven gameplay. Parsa added, 'With AI, we can help every child learn better while enjoying the game they already love.' Their plugin observes player actions in-game and uses an intelligent chatbot powered by Google's Gemini AI to teach and test students through real-time, personalised feedback. JUNE 4 — We are standing at the threshold of a new era, one not merely defined by technological advancement, but by the rise of intelligence itself. The Intelligent Age, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and automation, is quietly transforming how societies function, how economies grow, and how nations govern. Yet, in many parts of the world, public policy has yet to catch up with this new reality. In the past, societies organized themselves around capital, labour, and resources. Today, the premium lies in data, algorithms, and the capacity to harness them for strategic and social gain. AI-driven systems now diagnose diseases, trade stocks, optimise supply chains, and predict consumer behaviour with astonishing precision. But alongside these opportunities come significant risks, job displacement, widening digital divides, ethical dilemmas, and data sovereignty disputes. The question facing governments is no longer whether to embrace the Intelligent Age, it is how to do so wisely, inclusively, and humanely. What are the right policies for an intelligent future? At the heart of this challenge lies education. Nations must urgently modernise their education systems to cultivate not only digital literacy but also the uniquely human skills AI cannot replicate: critical thinking, empathy, creativity, and ethical reasoning. Equally vital is lifelong learning, a continuous, adaptive approach to reskilling workers displaced by intelligent machines. Infrastructure, too, must be reimagined. Equitable access to high-speed internet, secure cloud services, and digital platforms is as fundamental today as roads and electricity were in the industrial era. Public investment in AI research hubs and smart public services can help narrow inequalities and stimulate local innovation ecosystems. On the regulatory front, governments must strike a delicate balance between enabling AI's potential and safeguarding public trust. Clear, transparent frameworks are needed to govern AI ethics, data protection, and cybersecurity. We are standing at the threshold of a new era, one not merely defined by technological advancement, but by the rise of intelligence itself. — Reuters pic In doing so, nations must avoid the twin dangers of regulatory paralysis and unchecked technological exploitation. And perhaps most importantly, social safety nets must evolve. The gig economy, digital labour platforms, and AI-driven automation demand fresh thinking about employment protections, healthcare access, and even the idea of a universal basic income. Ignoring these social shifts risks leaving millions vulnerable in an economy that increasingly values machines over manpower. We should not ignore the geopolitics of intelligence. The Intelligent Age is also redrawing geopolitical lines. Data and AI are now strategic assets, akin to oil in the 20th century. Nations capable of harnessing AI at scale will enjoy decisive economic and military advantages. This makes international collaboration essential. From AI ethics to data-sharing protocols and cybersecurity, global standards must be developed to prevent a digital arms race and ensure AI serves the collective good. Many agree on the need for a new social contract. Ultimately, the Intelligent Age demands more than policy tweaks; it calls for a new social contract. One that reaffirms the primacy of human dignity in a world where machines grow smarter. One that ensures technology enhances, rather than erodes, the bonds of community, fairness, and trust. And one that recognises that while AI may process vast data sets, the wisdom to govern its use must remain deeply, unapologetically human. As nations chart their course into this intelligent future, the measure of their success will not lie in how much technology they deploy, but in how well they protect, empower, and uplift their people. The true measure of global progress will not be how much technology we develop, but how wisely, fairly, and humanely we deploy it. As nations chart their course into this intelligent future, they must ensure that intelligence, whether artificial or human, serves the cause of human well-being, social justice, and planetary stewardship. In this Intelligent Age, the choice before us is clear: collaborate to build an inclusive, responsible, and ethical global order, or risk a world where technological power outpaces the wisdom to wield it. Malaysia is fortunate to have a government that is very much on the path to effectively embrace the many challenges of the Intelligent Age. But, as admitted by many, bringing reforms is no easy task.
