18,000 kg of waste collected from beaches during fortnight-long drive in Guajrat
Gandhinagar: More than 18,350kg of waste, including a large quantity of plastic, was collected from the beaches of the state in a fortnight-long drive from May 22 to June 5, the state govt informed on Friday.
The drive to clean beaches was undertaken by the Gujarat Environment Management Institute (GEMI) with participation from citizens.
An official statement said that cleaning activities were conducted at coastal sites of Dwarka, Shivrajpur, Umargam, Dandi, Dumas, Mahuva, Porbandar, and Ravalpir. The initiative was supported by the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, local municipalities, forest officials, NGOs, and industries.
A number of awareness programmes were also held for the responsible disposal of waste, the statement said.
With a 1,600-km coastline, Gujarat has several popular beaches like Shivrajpur (a Blue Flag-certified beach), Dwarka, Dumas, Tithal, Mandvi, Ghoghla, Somnath, Dandi, Porbandar, and Umargam. Some of these beaches also hold historical and ecological significance. Dandi is associated with Mahatma Gandhi's famous 'Salt March', while Shivrajpur's Blue Flag status signifies high standards of cleanliness, safety, and environmental sustainability.

An official statement said that increasing tourist footfalls and local littering have led to beaches being polluted, mainly by single-use plastics, plastic bottles, wrappers, fishing nets, and other non-biodegradable waste accumulating along the coast. This waste endangers marine life such as turtles, crabs, and coastal birds, apart from affecting the livelihood of fishermen.
The statement said that apart from the cleaning of beaches, awareness was created through 37 street plays performed in urban and rural areas of 15 districts like Aravalli, Rajkot, Bharuch, Kutch, Dahod, Junagadh, and Dang. These performances reached over 4,100 people, educating them about plastic hazards and promoting eco-friendly practices.
Ten residential societies of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad also joined in the waste collection drive, with about 450 residents collecting more than 250kg of recyclable plastic, the statement said.

Eid Ul Adha 2025: Bakrid Rituals, Qurbani Meaning And Celebrations In India
Last Updated: Eid Al Adha celebrations 2025: Bakrid is celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm to honour Prophet Ibrahim's act of faith and disobedience. Eid Ul Adha Celebrations 2025: Bakrid, also known as Eid-ul-Adha, is one of the most important festivals celebrated by Muslims around the world. The date varies across continents according to the moon sighting; however, in India, it will be observed on June 7. The festival will fall a day prior in Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Oman. Bakrid is celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm to honour Prophet Ibrahim's act of faith and disobedience. Muslims observe this festival on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, which is the last month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Eid-ul-Adha is also called the Festival of Sacrifice because, according to Islamic tradition, God asked Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as a test of devotion. Just as he was about to follow the command, God was impressed by his faith and stopped him, replacing his son with a ram (male sheep). This festival honours Ibrahim's willingness to obey God. Bakrid Rituals On this day, Muslims wear traditional clothes and gather in mosques or open ground to offer Eid prayers. After the prayers, they perform a main ritual called Qurbani of sheep, goat, camel or buffalo. Then the meat of the sacrificed animal is divided into three parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends and one for the poor. Bakrid celebration across India People prepare delicious meals on this day with the sacrificed animal. Common dishes include biryani, kebabs, mutton korma and sheer kurma. Families gather for festive meals and guests are warmly welcomed. It is a day for social bonding. People visit relatives and neighbours' houses, greet each other with Eid Mubarak, and exchange gifts or Eidi. Some even visit charitable houses and orphanages to distribute food, clothes or money. It is not compulsory for people to perform Qurbani; only those who can afford it can do so. Every family celebrates Bakrid in their own special way. Some celebrate this day by cooking traditional dishes passed down from their grandparents, others may donate clothes or books as part of Qurbani.
