Leicester's England record-holder Youngs to retire at end of season
Leicester Tigers' 35-year-old former England scrumhalf Ben Youngs, the country's most-capped men's player, will retire at the end of the season, the Premiership club said on Tuesday.
Youngs, who became Leicester's youngest Premiership player aged 17 in April 2007, made his 332nd appearance for the club as a substitute in the Easter Sunday win away to Bristol Bears.
He retired from international rugby in 2023 after 127 games. Youngs played in four Rugby World Cups and the 2013 British & Irish Lions tour of Australia and won four Six Nations titles.
"It's a bittersweet feeling really," he said of his decision to retire after this season. "Obviously, I'm sad at the thought it's coming to an end but I'm excited about the rest of this season, excited about what this group can do.
"That's the strange part, I'm using the 'r' word (retirement) but it isn't over today, there is still plenty of rugby left this season and that's what is at the front of my mind. I'm not done, let's not write the obituary just yet."
Youngs, a five-times Premiership champion and three-times Anglo-Welsh Cup winner, holds the club record for most European appearances with 84, including 78 in the Champions Cup.
"I have spent two decades of my life here at the club and I have been lucky to be a part of some incredible moments along the way, enjoyed so much success and made memories that will last a lifetime," he said.
"It's all I have known in club rugby, the green, red and white, and all I've wanted to know. The idea of playing against this club wasn't ever an option for me and so for me to be able to finish a one-club player will be one of my greatest achievements.
"The time will come to thank everybody who has helped me achieve what I have but that's for when it comes to an end. For now, it's about finishing this chapter of my life with some more success. I'm not done just yet." REUTERS

Lacklustre Carlo Ancelotti debut as Brazil held to goalless draw at Ecuador
GUAYAQUIL – Carlo Ancelotti got off to a disappointing start as Brazil coach in their South American World Cup qualifier on June 5, drawing 0-0 against Ecuador and putting the Italian under considerable pressure. Brazil were unable to break down Ecuador's organised defence and had few chances in the first half, the clearest coming from a Vinicius Jr attempt that was saved by goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle. Ecuador threatened in the second half when John Yeboah attempted a through ball, but striker Nilson Angulo was caught offside. Ancelotti's side created more chances, but failed to capitalise, with Richarlison squandering a well-placed pass from Vinicius in the box and Casemiro's powerful long-range shot being saved by Valle. 'It was a very good defensive game. I saw the team better with the ball, playing a little more fluidly. In the end, it was a good draw, and we leave here confident for the next match,' Ancelotti said. 'The conditions were complicated for a more elaborate style of play. We had good chances with Vini and Casemiro in the second half. We could have been better in attack, but we must also respect the opponent's strength. Ecuador played well, just like us. 'As I said, we needed more in attack. Ecuador defended well, and it wasn't easy to find spaces between the lines. We struggled to build clear chances and didn't always have clean possession in the final third. I don't want to make excuses, but the pitch wasn't in ideal condition to play.' The 65-year-old, who left Real Madrid at the end of the European season, has been charged with taking Brazil through the latter stages of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The former AC Milan and Chelsea manager replaced Dorival Junior, who was sacked at the end of March after the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of reigning champions and bitter rivals Argentina. "Of course we always have to improve, but little by little we're getting better. It's only been two or three days with a new coach. The dynamic is good, the atmosphere is good," Casemiro said. Vinicius added: 'Ancelotti hasn't had time to show us his game plan yet. It's only been two or three days of training.' Brazil remain in fourth place with 22 points. Their next opponents are third-placed Paraguay, who won 2–0 against Uruguay earlier. Meanwhile, Ecuador are closer to qualifying, remaining in second place with 24 points. The top six teams qualify directly for next year's World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada. They play ninth-placed Peru on June 10. Gattuso leaves Hajduk Split after one season in charge
Former Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso has left his role as coach of Hajduk Split by mutual consent, the Croatian club announced on Thursday. Gattuso joined Hajduk Split ahead of last season and led the team to a third-placed finish in the country's top flight. Their European campaign, however, ended early when they were knocked out of the Conference League in the third qualifying round after an aggregate loss against Slovakian team Ruzomberok. The 47-year-old Italian previously coached AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Olympique de Marseille before moving to the Adriatic city of Split. "Once again we thank you for everything and wish you all the best in the rest of your life and coaching career," the Croatian club said in a statement. Spain beat France 5-4 in thriller to reach Nations League final
Soccer Football - Nations League - Semi Final - Spain v France - MHPArena, Stuttgart, Germany - June 5, 2025 Spain's Lamine Yamal scores their third goal from the penalty spot REUTERS/Kai Pfaffenbach TPX IMAGES OF THE DAY STUTTGART, Germany - Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal inspired his country to a thrilling 5-4 win over France on Thursday to send the holders through to their third successive Nations League final where they will face Iberian neighbours Portugal. The European champions dazzled in the first half of the semi-final at the MHP Arena with fine goals by Nico Williams and Mikel Merino inside 25 minutes to race into a 2-0 lead. Spain's 17-year-old starlet Yamal then got in on the act to coolly add a third from the penalty spot nine minutes into the second half before his Barcelona teammate Pedri clipped a sublime fourth into the net less than a minute later. The goals continued to flow as France striker Kylian Mbappe also slotted home from the penalty spot near the hour mark before Yamal added Spain's fifth after 67 minutes to cap an exhilarating individual performance. France then mounted an extraordinary comeback as a stunning strike from Rayan Cherki, Dani Vivian's own goal and a Randal Kolo Muani finish caused Spain some late jitters but they held on to book a clash with their Portuguese rivals on Sunday.
