West Indies issue LA 2028 Olympic cricket plea
LA 2028 will see cricket returning to the Olympics for the first time since 1900, with a six-team T20 event in both the men's and women's game set to be included in the programme.
The ICC, cricket's global governing body, have yet to announce the qualification process but there are concerns in the West Indies, long one of the sport's established major international teams and the one closest geographically to Los Angeles, that their constituent countries could be excluded.
That's because while the likes of Barbados, Jamaica -- the home of Games sprint great Usain Bolt -- Antigua and Barbuda and Trinidad and Tobago compete under the West Indies banner when it come to international cricket, those territories are all individual entities at an Olympics.
So if cricket qualification for LA 2028 is to be decided primarily on the basis of world rankings, the event could go ahead without any Caribbean involvement at all.
"All we are asking is that our individual nations' exceptional Olympic legacy be considered in the conversation," CWI chief executive Chris Dehring said Thursday.
"Our nations have proudly flown their individual flags atop Olympic podiums as perennial gold medallists.
"Now, with cricket's inclusion, we must ensure that our cricketers are not shut out of history. We are ready to collaborate. We are ready to compete. But above all, we are asking for fairness."
CWI appear to accept there is no prospect of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowing a West Indies team to compete at LA 2028, even though their men's side were T20 world champions in 2012 and 2016 -- when their women took the equivalent female global title.
But in a letter to the ICC, CWI suggested two possible routes for regional representation.
The first would see an inter-Caribbean qualifying tournament should the West Indies men or women find themselves in a qualifying position, allowing the winner to take the region's spot.
In the second, a dedicated regional qualifying process involving each of the West Indies independent nations would take place.
CWI president Kishore Shallow added: "The Caribbean has always punched above its weight at the Olympics, inspiring the world with our athletic brilliance.
"Cricket's return to the Games in 2028 must not exclude our young cricketers from the same dream that has inspired our athletes."

French Open: Sabalenka, Swiatek to battle in semi-final as Alcaraz dominates Paul
Three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek set up a blockbuster French Open semi-final clash with world number one Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday, as reigning men's holder Carlos Alcaraz powered his way into the last four. Alcaraz blew away American 12th seed Tommy Paul for the loss of just five games in the night session on Court Philippe Chatrier. The Spaniard needed just one hour 34 minutes to dismantle Paul 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 and set up a last-four meeting with Italy's Lorenzo Musetti. "I'm sorry you wanted to watch more tennis, I had to do my work," Alcaraz told the crowd. "It was one of those matches where I could close my eyes and everything went in. It was like my feeling today was unbelievable." Earlier, Swiatek, the fifth seed, got past Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-1, 7-5, after top women's seed Sabalenka won a tense quarter-final against Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen 7-6 (7/3), 6-3. World number five Swiatek has been struggling for her best form and has not reached a final since winning the French Open title last year. Coach Inzaghi to leave Inter Milan: club
"The club and Simone Inzaghi are parting ways. This is the decision taken by mutual agreement," Inter said in a statement. Both Inter and Inzaghi said the decision had been made at a meeting involving the coach and club President Giuseppe Marotta on Tuesday afternoon. The parting came just days after Saturday's 5-0 thumping by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final. Talk had already been swirling about his exit, and last month Inzaghi played down rumours about a two-year deal with Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal worth 50 million euros. Italian media said Tuesday this reported had been confirmed. Inzaghi took over Inter in 2021 and had a contract until 2026. The 49-year-old guided the club to one Serie A title - Inter's 20th - and two Italian Cups. He led the team to two Champions League finals in the past three seasons but lost both. On track to repeat the treble heroics of 2010 just a few weeks ago, Inter ended the season trophyless after falling away in each competition. In its statement, the club said Inzaghi's management was "characterised by great passion, accompanied by professionalism and dedication". His trophies had "brought the club back to the top of Italian and European football", it said. Marotta thanked him "for the work done, for the passion shown and also for the sincerity in today's discussion, which led to the common decision to separate our paths". "Only when we have fought together to achieve success day by day, can we have a frank dialogue like the one that happened today," he said.
