‘You can see clumps': Watch out for new toxic algae, deadly for dogs, in Columbia River
PORTLAND, Ore. () — Public health officials are warning the public about a new type of toxic algae in the Columbia River that can be deadly to animals.
This new algae has so far been found along the moving body of water that is the Columbia River, considered an unusual setting compared to where other algae are commonly found.

Officials said after eating this new form of toxic algae. That's why public health officials say to be extra cautious as the weather gets warmer.
Dr. Alan Melnick with Clark County Public Health is warning dog owners to be on the lookout for this new form of toxic algae.
'We became aware of this new algae, these benthic mats, basically last fall when we had a dog death after being exposed to these benthic algae mats,' Melnick said.
Melnick said another dog also died after consuming this algae last year.
'They're found in moving bodies of water,' Melnick said. 'And they don't have the same appearance, they're actually below the surface. The water will look really clear but underneath there are these mats of algae.'
The mats are usually slimy, smelly and can range in color.
Valurie Kashchenko didn't even bring her pup fishing with her today.
'I don't feel comfortable bringing my dog to any body of water right now,' she said. 'I mean, you can see clumps of it coming up on the shore. And even the places I go to fish, my line gets tangled up in it, there's just so much of it, there's just so much of it, I'm scared if my dog goes out there and ingests it, something bad is going to happen.'

Kashchenko and public health officials have the same advice for people and their pets hitting the Columbia this summer.
'Just be very cautious, if you see any warning signs just watch them very carefully, and it's always okay to just be extra cautious,' Kashchenko said.
Public health officials also said people could have a reaction to the algae — they get a tingly, burning sensation.
Clark County public health officials said to keep an eye on younger children getting in the water as well. And if a child is suspected of being in contact with the algae, they should see a doctor.

Southern Miss defeats Columbia 8-1, advances to championship round of Hattiesburg Regional
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Grayden Harris and Landen Payne allowed one run, Southern Mississippi scored the go-ahead run on an infield throwing error and the Golden Eagles defeated Columbia 8-1 on Sunday to reach the championship round of the Hattiesburg Regional. The score was tied at 1-all through five innings before the Golden Eagles scored in each of the final four innings. Jake Cook hit a grounder to first baseman Tate Vogler who missed the tag on Cook and his throw sailed past the catcher when trying to get Barrett out at the plate. Southern Miss (46-15) added a run in the seventh, three in the eighth and two in the ninth. Ben Higdon blasted a three-run home run in the eighth. Regional host Southern Mississippi advanced to the championship round against undefeated Miami. The Golden Eagles need a win later Sunday and again on Monday to advance to the super regionals. Miami needs one victory to win the regional and advance. Harris (5-3) allowed four hits and one run in 6 1/3 innings. He left with a runner on first in the seventh inning, giving way to Payne who induced an inning-ending 3-6-3 double play. Payne allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings for his fifth save. T3 - Texas Tech 0, UCLA 0 The Texas Tech bullpen is getting warm, as a very, very rare occurrence is taking place in OKC: NiJa Canady is struggling. That's her second walk today, and the ace does not take those lightly. But the changeup she just pulled the string on against Taylor Stephens may have just gotten her back in the groove, as she strikes her out on three pitches. Now THAT is grace under pressure. Canady just stranded the bases loaded to erase the Bruins' threat. B2 - Texas Tech 0, UCLA 0 The Bruins are making Nijaree Canady and the Red Raiders' defense work, as Rylee Slimp just beat out Canady's throw for a bunt base hit to give UCLA two runners on with one out. That, on top of some frustration with the strike zone, can send things southward for a defense really quickly, but we'll see if Canady can calm things down here for her team. While the Red Raiders enter this matchup on a nine-game winning streak, the Bruins may still have some momentum after taking down former Pac-12 and current Big Ten rival Oregon with a walk-off homer on Thursday night. In previous matchups between Texas Tech and UCLA, UCLA has dominated with a 5-0 record. The most recent contest between the two teams was in an early-season tournament in February 2022, when the Bruins won a tight 2-1 game. I have a really hard time picking against Canady, so I'm going with the Red Raiders to finally flip the script on the Bruins and win this one. I will say, though, UCLA has really brought the fight in its past couple of games, with that walk-off against Oregon and another against South Carolina before winning the rubber match against the Gamecocks as well to advance to OKC. I think the biggest question is if the Texas Tech offense can get more than one run to give Canady some room to work with. These Bruins hitters are familiar with Canady as she played at Stanford last season when the Cardinal and Bruins were still in the same conference in the Pac-12 before it dissipated ... and before Canady transferred. Kavan mentioned that her grandmother's favorite part of the day was watching softball, and now, with the "best seat in the house," Texas finally took down its biggest rival. What a great story. Teagan Kavan just took it to another level!!! She hits 71 mph on the radar to strike out Hannah Coor to end the game! That's Texas' first-ever win over Oklahoma in the WCWS, finally slaying the demon that had been hanging over its head for quite some time and all season since last year's championship series. The Texas defense really came to play today, and Kavan threw a sparkler of a game today.
