Government pledges £50m for Casement Park rebuild

The money was included in the Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves' spending review, which outlines the Government's spending plans over the coming years. Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill said it is now time to get the GAA stadium built. Plans for a 34,000-capacity stadium have been mired in uncertainty because of a major funding gap of around £150 million. Today marks a significant step forward in the redevelopment of Casement Park, as the British government joins the Executive, the Irish government, and the GAA in committing funding. In every meeting I've had with the British government, I've made the case for funding Casement… — Michelle O'Neill (@moneillsf) June 11, 2025 The Government announcement includes £50 million to support the stadium being developed over four years. Ms O'Neill said: 'Casement Park is an Executive flagship project and is more than just a sporting venue, it will serve as an economic driver for the surrounding communities and region, creating jobs and attracting investment. 'Today's commitment of substantial funding from the British Government marks an enormous step forward. It is time for all of us to pull together to now get Casement built.' Stormont ministers committed £62.5 million to Casement in 2011, as part of a strategy to revamp it along with football's Windsor Park and the rugby ground at Ravenhill. While the two other Belfast-based projects went ahead, the redevelopment of Casement was delayed for several years because of legal challenges by local residents. The estimated build cost spiralled in the interim. Last September the UK Government ended hopes that the west Belfast venue would host Euro 2028 games, when it said it would not bridge a funding gap to deliver the redevelopment in time. As well as the Stormont contribution of £62.5 million, the Irish Government has offered roughly £42 million and the GAA has pledged to contribute at least £15 million. It has been reported that the cost of the project has fallen to £270 million since it was confirmed the ground would not host Euros matches. Under current plans and including the £50 million from Wednesday's announcement, the funding shortfall stands at roughly £100 million. Ms Reeves' announcement was welcomed by the Irish Government. Deputy premier and Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Harris said Dublin had long supported the redevelopment of Casement Park as a 'landmark sports infrastructure project'. In a statement, Mr Harris said: 'In February 2024, we made an early commitment from the Shared Island initiative of up to 50 million euro (£42 million) for the redevelopment of Casement. 'We underlined our commitment at that time to support the GAA in progressing this project in partnership with the UK and NI authorities. 'I will now engage with all these partners to deliver a redeveloped stadium. 'The last match hosted in Casement was well over a decade ago and it is past time for the redevelopment of this historic venue to get under way.'

Ayrshire girls football team scores vital equipment from ScottishPower

Retiring Ayr United striker Clare Docherty nominted the Stevenston-based club. An Ayrshire girls football team is celebrating after scoring vital new equipment from ScottishPower. The renewable energy company became the Principal Partner for Scottish women's football last season. ‌ TASS Thistle Girls were nominated for the award by retiring Ayr United striker Clare Docherty. ‌ As part of ScottishPower's partnership with the sport, they're providing six kit packages to grassroots club across the country, featuring bibs, cones, water bottles and Puma boots and footballs. Players from SWPL clubs were invited to nominate a community club they value for their work to further developing girls' youth football. Clare nominated TASS Thistle Girls, whose coach Rebecca Mitchell-Welsh received the new equipment at the team's training ground in Stevenston from Lauren Stirling, a project coordinator with ScottishPower. Clare said: 'I've nominated TASS because years ago in this area there was no girls team until they allowed girls to play in their boys' team, allowing the game to grow. 'We've now got around 100 girls at training with a dedicated girl's pathway. 'When I first started, we wore our own kit to training, and at the weekend our game strips were donated by a boys' team. ‌ 'Thankfully the game has massively improved since I was younger and it's nice to see the girls getting such great quality kit thanks to ScottishPower supporting the cause so much.' TASS coach Rebecca added: 'Grassroots clubs are more than just football, they're about setting foundations with the girls around health and wellbeing and building friendships too. ‌ 'It's absolutely fantastic to have this new kit donated for them. As a community club, we do a lot of fundraising and sometime the girls find it harder to get sponsors so to have this from ScottishPower, it makes a real difference for us.' Keith Anderson, Chief Executive of ScottishPower, said: 'We want to energise women's football for both current and future generations and build a community of players that inspire even more people to play and enjoy the game. 'That means working with our partners at SWF and the SWPL to help clubs and players overcome barriers to their growth and operation. 'By providing training kit and asking those players at the top of the game to nominate a community club to receive it, we're making sure that everyone can benefit from this partnership, whether at the elite end of the game or those all-essential grassroots.'

From NBA All-Star to Shaolin monk: Victor Wembanyama goes on a China retreat

HONG KONG — On the basketball court, NBA star Victor Wembanyama plays forward-center, but in China it seems he has temporarily taken up the position of a Shaolin monk. The towering 7-foot-3 player from France has been touring around China and appears to have taken a spiritual detour at Shaolin Temple in a picture widely shared on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. With a shaved head and wearing a gray robe, Wembanyama can be seen sitting in front of statues of Buddha in a picture posted Monday by the NBA's official Weibo page, which said the player had 'reportedly' begun a 10-day retreat at the temple in central Henan province. 'Deepening his spiritual journey!' the post read. Wembanyama is in 'closed-door martial arts training,' an employee at the Songshan Shaolin Scenic Area, which includes the temple, told NBC News on Wednesday. 'No one can see him. He deliberately stays out of public view,' said the employee, who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media. Wembanyama's team, the Texas-based San Antonio Spurs, posted a video on Instagram last week of Wembanyama exploring the Great Wall of China — while he still had his hair. ' @wemby exploring China!' the post said. One of the user comments underneath said: 'looks like a regular sized bridge when Wemby on it.' The 2024-25 NBA season ended early for Wembanyama, 21, due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, for which he underwent surgery in March, not long after his first appearance in the NBA All-Star Game. At the time, he was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. The 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft, Wembanyama entered the NBA as arguably the greatest basketball prospect since LeBron James in 2003. Besides the Spurs posting his video, Wembanyama has kept his China trip rather low-key, not posting anything about it on his own social media accounts. Retreats at Shaolin Temple have become increasingly popular in recent years with celebrities visiting China. Visits there usually combine meditation, kung fu martial arts and Zen Buddhist practices.
