French Open: Elina Svitolina saves match points and beats 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini

PARIS (AP) — Elina Svitolina saved three match points and came back to eliminate 2024 runner-up Jasmine Paolini 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1 on Sunday, earning her fifth French Open quarterfinal appearance.
The 13th-seeded Svitolina, who is from Ukraine, is a three-time Grand Slam semifinalist — getting that far twice at Wimbledon and once at the U.S. Open — but is 0-4 so far in the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros.
She'll try to go a step further on Tuesday, when she will face either three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek or 2022 Wimbledon champion Elina Rybakina. They were scheduled to play each other next at Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The No. 4-seeded Paolini entered Sunday on a career-best nine-match winning streak, including a run to the title on red clay at the Italian Open.
A year ago, she reached her first major final at the French Open, losing to Swiatek, then also made it to the championship match at Wimbledon, where she lost to Barbora Krejcikova.
Against Svitolina, Paolini served for the victory while leading by a set and a break at 5-3 in the second. But the Italian got broken at 15 there. She then held her first two match points while ahead 5-4, 15-40 as Svitolina served.
Paolini missed a forehand on the initial chance to end things, and a backhand on the next.
In the ensuing tiebreaker, Paolini once again was a single point from winning — and once again failed to come through, this time when Svitolina ended a 14-stroke exchange with a volley winner.
From there, Svitolina was in control, racing to a 4-0 lead in the third set. She is quite comfortable on clay, where she has earned a tour-leading 16 of her 27 wins this season.

In the day's first men's match, Tommy Paul beat No. 25 Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to become the first American man in the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros since Andre Agassi in 2003. The fourth round is scheduled to conclude on Day 9, with No. 1 Jannik Sinner, 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic and four American women in action: No. 2 Coco Gauff, No. 3 Jessica Pegula and No. 7 Madison Keys vs. Hailey Baptiste.

Honda leaders visit Ohio to announce major Olympic partnership
MARYSVILLE, Ohio (WDTN) — Honda leadership arrived in Marysville to reveal their latest and largest partnership yet: as a founding sponsor for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. 'I'm thrilled to announce Honda as the official automotive partner of the U.S. official Olympic and Paralympic teams,' said Toshihiro Mibe, Honda CEO. EPA awards $1.2 million to clean up contaminated sites in Dayton The announcement was shared just across the road from Honda's first American manufacturing plant, constructed in 1979. Leaders said it was only natural to celebrate the announcement in Marysville. 'We have the Honda footprint across the U.S.,' said Monica Oliverio, American Honda General Administration vice president. 'We would like to try and promote that partnership and that presence.' This partnership means Honda will be providing nearly all of the ground transportation options for the events, including for the athletes. 'It's so exciting to be a part of this moment,' said Oliverio. 'We're hoping to take advantage of this three-year journey to the Olympics themselves.' New Dayton Children's facility opens in Washington Township 2 NEWS spoke with an Olympic athlete from the Miami Valley, Annette Echikunwoke, who won a silver medal in 2024. Meadows makes season debut with Tigers after being sidelined by an arm injury
CHICAGO (AP) — Parker Meadows had a big smile on his face. It had been a long time since he had played in a major league game. Meadows was activated by the Detroit Tigers on Monday after missing the start of the season because of a nerve issue in his upper right arm. He started in center field and led off for the opener of a three-game series at the Chicago White Sox. 'I didn't sleep much last night, just thinking about the day,' Meadows said. 'Excited to be here.' The major league-leading Tigers optioned infielder/outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy to Triple-A Toledo after Sunday's 1-0 victory at Kansas City. To make room for Meadows on the 40-man roster, right-hander Ryan Cusick was designated for assignment. Meadows was injured in Detroit's spring training opener Feb. 22 on a throw from center field. He appeared in eight rehab games in the minors beginning on May 21, batting .259 with a homer and five RBIs. 'He's a glue guy, and the guys love him,' Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. 'He played at an incredibly high level for us on both sides of the ball, and we have missed him. Our guys have done a really good job of kind of picking up the pieces and being able to adjust to life without him, but we're better with him.' Meadows, 25, hit .244 with nine homers and 28 RBIs in 82 games for Detroit last season. He also batted .269 (7 for 26) in seven postseason games, helping the Tigers reach the AL Division Series. The road back to the majors took longer than Meadows expected when he first got hurt. 'It was tough, but just put my head down and worked every day,' he said. 'We've got a really good training staff here. Keep a good head on my shoulders and they got me right.' One of the last steps for Meadows before rejoining Detroit was trying a couple of hard throws during his rehab stint. 'At first it was a little eh,' he said. 'But the more throws I made, the better it felt. It feels good now.' The return of Meadows gives Hinch another option on a versatile Tigers team that had won six of seven going into the matchup with the last-place White Sox. Javier Báez, who played an impressive center field while Meadows was out, was back at shortstop for the series opener in Chicago. Hinch said Báez is going to move around the diamond. 'I told Javy, 'Don't take the outfield glove (and) throw it away. You're still going to need it,'' Hinch said. ___
