CCCS Chancellor Garcia announces retirement

Yahoo19-02-2025

(COLORADO) — Pikes Peak State College announced on Wednesday, Jan. 19, that Colorado Community College System (CCCS) Chancellor Joe Garcia will be retiring in June.
Garcia's leadership journey began at Pikes Peak State College (PPSC), where he served as President from 2001 to 2006. PPSC said that Garcia's commitment to increasing access to education, strengthening workforce partnerships, and supporting student populations laid the foundation for the college's continued success.
'I think that he was one of, if not the greatest, educators in our state in terms of the impact of our institutions,' said PPSC President Lance Bolton. 'He brought a passion for our schools to the legislature and created opportunities for our low-income students that previously had not been available to them.'
Garcia continued his work at Colorado State University Pueblo, where he served as Colorado's Lieutenant Governor, and became Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education. where he advocated for college affordability and student success at the state level.
In 2018, Garcia returned to CCCS as Chancellor where he currently oversees 13 colleges and serves more than 124,000 students annually. His tenure brought initiatives like Colorado Online and the Bridge to Bachelor's program. He also played a role in hiring 11 of 13 CCCS's current college presidents.
'I started my higher education leadership career within CCCS, and it's incredibly meaningful to conclude it here,' said Community colleges are the most powerful engines of economic opportunity, and I am proud to have spent my career ensuring that all students—regardless of background—can access the education and training they need to succeed.'
To ensure a smooth transition, the State Board for Community Colleges and Occupational Education intends to appoint Diane Duffy, CCS Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Strategy Officer, as Interim Chancellor following Garcia's retirement. His retirement is effective on June 30, 2025.

Karoline Levitt ditches religious necklace after Jon Stewart's brutal joke: ‘Some sort of weird Pinocchio cross'

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was seen without her cross necklace following the mockery of Daily Show host Jon Stewart. Leavitt appeared for her briefing on Tuesday in a navy blazer, but she had chosen to forego her signature jewelry. On Monday night, Stewart skewered Leavitt, saying, 'By the way, I think that the more she lies, the bigger her cross gets. Is that possible? It's like some sort of weird Pinocchio cross.' The host also noted that Leavitt is likely to be 'the only one' who will be able to leave the administration 'unscathed … Because I don't think that she has any principles in there left to die.' Stewart went on to say he's "not even upset with this lady. Because just rolling with the punches is clearly the only strategy for happiness when you're working for Trump.' "Trump's very open secret has always been: He doesn't believe in or care about any policy issue at all. He wants attention, he wants his ego stroked, and he wants money. He wants f***wads and f***wads of money,' he added. Leavitt, 27, told the Christian Broadcasting Network earlier this year that "My faith is incredibly important to me, I would argue, now more than ever, being in a role that is very demanding and at times controversial, and there's a lot of public pressure and discussion online about who you are and your family.' She added that 'it could be difficult for someone who doesn't have faith, but with faith, all things are possible.' Leavitt faced criticism in April for her comments about Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador earlier this year. She attempted to connect Garcia to the 2023 rape and murder of a Maryland woman, whose killer was convicted that same month. 'He will never live in the United States again,' Leavitt said of Garcia. 'She gets up there, and, with a cross around her neck, she lies. She violates the ninth commandment about not bearing false witness,' Andy Levy said on The New Abnormal podcast. 'She sits up there and says over and over again that Garcia was a member of the MS 13 gang. She takes it a step further, and she says that this was a finding of an immigration court. It absolutely was not.'

House Democrat Slams His Party For 'Enriching Themselves' And Outlines Path To Beat Trump

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) appears to have learned a lot from former Vice President Kamala Harris' disastrous 2024 campaign, and is slamming his own party for being 'focused on enriching themselves' rather than defeating President Donald Trump. Garcia argued as much during an appearance Tuesday on MSNBC's 'The Weeknight,' and while this wasn't the first time he urged his colleagues to reflect on why they lost last year's election to Trump, he appeared more frustrated and brutally honest than ever. 'What we have to do as a party is focus on a few things,' Garcia said Tuesday. 'First is making it very clear that we are the anti-corruption party. We're the party that believes in democracy and the rule of law and supporting working families and the American public.' 'Right now, we have an administration that is completely focused on enriching themselves and their family,' he continued. 'They are stealing from the American public, from working-class people, to enrich themselves and their billionaire friends.' The panel of rapt MSNBC hosts, including Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele and Alicia Menendez, appeared utterly captivated by his message, which the lawmaker argued Democrats must 'do a better job of communicating' on a daily basis to dejected voters. Garcia notably co-chaired Harris' campaign, which only had some 100 days to run against Trump after she became the Democratic nominee. Her loss spawned public frustration within the party, whose members couldn't understand how they lost to Trump — yet again. Garcia acknowledged Tuesday that Democrats failed because they 'didn't convince the American public that we're on their side,' but argued that the party's current resistance to Trump's executive orders and seemingly open corruption is winning voters over. 'Every week that goes by, we're getting stronger,' he said. 'We're honing in on our message, and when I'm ... talking to people, going to town halls, people are reacting to the aggressive approach that we're taking, and they like it. We've gotta be out there and fight.' Steele went on to ask arguably the only important question, namely how Democrats can possibly win people over with promises of health care or a stable economy if they can't even stop Trump from defying judges, deporting people or arresting mayors. 'I think, one, we've got to call out every single lie, every single attack on Democracy, every time they try to intimidate members of Congress or the public,' Garcia suggested. 'We have got to call it out. We can't be afraid of putting it all out on the table.' 'The American public understands, and the American public wants to see us fight,' he said. US Amateur champion Jose Luis Ballester of Spain joins LIV Golf

GAINESVILLE, Va. (AP) — U.S. Amateur champion Jose Luis Ballester of Spain has joined LIV Golf and will make his professional debut this week at the Saudi-funded league's Virginia event. Ballester, who goes by the nickname Josele, signed a multiyear contract, LIV said Wednesday, and will be part of the Fireballs team captained by fellow Spaniard Sergio Garcia. Advertisement 'We are very excited about Josele joining the team,' Garcia said in a statement. 'Personally, I have known him since he could pick up a golf club and he has worked with my father as his coach throughout his golf career.' The 21-year-old Ballester recently concluded his senior season at Arizona State, the alma mater of LIV stars Jon Rahm and Phil Mickelson. He finished third in the PGA Tour University standings, earning him full status on the Korn Ferry Tour, but Golf Channel reported Monday that he declined membership on the PGA Tour's top developmental circuit. Although he missed the cut at the Masters in April, Ballester had a viral moment when he relieved himself in Rae's Creek on the par-5 13th hole. Ballester defeated Noah Kent 2 up in the 36-hole U.S. Amateur final at Hazeltine last August. Although he is turning professional, he keeps his spot in next week's U.S. Open at Oakmont as the reigning champion of the USGA's top amateur event.
