MIAMI - Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich tamed Flamengo 4-2 in a tense affair at the Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday to set up a much-anticipated all-European quarter-final against Paris St Germain at the Club World Cup.
Erick Pulgar's own goal opened the scoring for Bayern and Leon Goretzka was also on target for the German side, while Flamengo, who were defensively naive, twice reduced the deficit through Gerson and Jorginho.
Backed by a raucous crowd, Flamengo played with aggression but Bayern converted all their shots on target and reaped the rewards of a fast start, scoring twice in the opening 10 minutes.
"It was tough. We were playing against a really good side in difficult conditions, it was really hot," Kane said.
"I thought we played well for large spells but every time we got away they clawed their way back and made it difficult. The fourth goal was important to ease the nerves and from there we managed it well."
Earlier on Sunday, Champions League winners PSG sent a brutal reminder of their firepower when they cruised past Inter Miami 4-0, taking their foot off the pedal after the break in what could have turned into a humiliation for Lionel Messi's MLS team.
Bayern got off to a flying start, opening the scoring in the sixth minute when Pulgar deflected a corner kick into his own net.
Three minutes later, Kane doubled the advantage with a low shot that went in off the post.
Flamengo got into something of a groove and went close in the 15th minute, only for Manuel Neuer to save Luiz Araujo's effort from point-blank range.
Shortly after the cooling break, the Brazilian side pulled one back as Gerson fired a missile that went in off the underside of the bar, triggering a deafening roar from the crowd.
Bayern, however, restored their two-goal lead before the interval when Goretzka, capitalising on the space left by the Flamengo defence, whipped a shot from outside the box past keeper Agustin Rossi.
Tempers flared after a poor challenge by Pulgar on Kane as Flamengo struggled to contain their frustration.
Filipe Luis's side pulled one back again 10 minutes into the second half, Jorginho sending Neuer the wrong way after they were awarded a penalty for a Michael Olise handball.
The momentum had swung and Flamengo threatened with quick breaks, but Bayern held firm before finding the back of the net once more through Kane, who beat Rossi with another clinical low shot in the 73rd minute. REUTERS

"In summer, Rio is very, very hot. I'm more used (to it) than European people," the 18-year-old said. The world number 54, who has been rocketing up the rankings over the last year, said he was very nervous on his Wimbledon main-draw debut but it did not show. "I think my serves helped me a lot with the nerves today. I served really well," he said. At 4-4 and 0-40 down in the first set and with 51st-ranked Fearnley looking in good form, the ice set in and Fonseca rattled off the next 15 points in a row to take the set and hit the second set running. "He was playing better," Fonseca said. "Probably if he broke me, he was going to do the set and things could go easier for him." Fearnley threatened to get back into the match in the third-set tiebreak, going 5-2 up, but in similar fashion the Brazilian teenager found that steely cold temperament and produced two aces in a row. "When he was serving 5-2, he made a double-fault. I said to myself, 'That's my chance'," Fonseca said. "So very happy with the way I could manage the important points doing good serves and increasing the level." Fonseca, a former junior number one, has a large and vocal following at home, but he heard only a couple of voices in Portuguese in the crowd on Monday. "Normally I play with the crowd. The crowd is normally on my side," he said, while adding that the spectators were respectful despite favouring his opponent. FIFPRO mulls 20-minute halftimes, more cooling breaks amid extreme heat
MIAMI - Global players' union FIFPRO is exploring whether extending halftime to 20 minutes and introducing more frequent cooling breaks could better protect players from extreme heat. Nine of the 16 host cities for the 2026 World Cup face conditions considered 'extreme risk' for heat-related illness. Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Guadalajara, Houston, Kansas City, Miami, Monterrey and Philadelphia are expected to face dangerous levels of heat and humidity, posing player safety concerns and fueling calls for mandatory cooling aids or schedule changes. FIFPRO's heat risk assessments are based on wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), a measure combining temperature, humidity, solar radiation and wind speed to estimate how environmental conditions affect the body's ability to cool itself. Under FIFPRO guidelines, a WBGT reading above 28 degrees Celsius indicates conditions in which matches should be postponed or rescheduled to protect players' health. By comparison, world soccer governing body FIFA's own guidelines set the extreme risk threshold higher, at 32 degrees Celsius WBGT – but even by that standard, six of the nine cities are still projected to exceed safe limits. Major League Soccer in the U.S. has a threshold of 29 degrees Celsius WBGT. 'Cooling breaks at the 30th minute and 75th minutes are quite traditional, but from a physiological point of view it does not make sense,' said Vincent Gouttebarge, FIFPRO's Medical Director. 'Even if you ingest more than 200 millilitres of fluid, you already cannot take it all. So I would definitely like to see some project where we look at the efficacy of perhaps more frequent but shorter cooling breaks – every 15 minutes, rather than only one during each half.' LONGER HALFTIMES Gouttebarge also questioned whether the traditional 15-minute halftime interval is sufficient when matches are played in extreme heat. 'You can imagine that halftime of 15 minutes might not be enough in order to decrease the core temperature,' he said. 'It could be a halftime of 20 minutes which would be significant. That has been shown in the laboratory and FIFPRO, together with the national union in Portugal in August, we are going to test this kind of mitigation strategy.' The urgency of stronger heat protocols became clear at this month's Club World Cup where two matches -- Benfica-Bayern Munich in Charlotte and Chelsea-Esperance in Philadelphia exceeded the WBGT threshold FIFPRO considers unsafe. 'According to our position, those games should have been postponed later that day or rescheduled,' Gouttebarge said. FIFPRO officials acknowledged that FIFA has responded constructively during the tournament by lowering thresholds for mandatory cooling breaks and improving pitch-side hydration, but stressed that proactive planning is critical. 'FIFA have been quite responsive once the tournament was under way,' said Alex Phillips, FIFPRO General Secretary. 'They have actually modified how they've been dealing with heat during the matches based on FIFPRO's input, which is credit to the work of the team. Obviously, it would have been better if that happened in advance, but it's better that they have adapted.' FIFPRO warned that the risks highlighted at the Club World Cup are a preview of what players could face at the expanded 2026 World Cup. 'This is not just affecting the Club World Cup, but also future tournaments either in the U.S. or elsewhere in the world,' said Alexander Bielefeld, FIFPRO Director of Policy & Strategic Relations. 'We need a better balance between commercial interests and the health and safety of players,' he added referring to earlier kick-off times to accommodate European television audiences. Raducanu, Kartal and Tarvet get British Wimbledon charge off to flying start

British tennis is enjoying a buoyant period, and although former U.S. champion Raducanu and Jack Draper are making most of the headlines, there are 23 local players in the men's and women's singles this week, the most at Wimbledon since 1984. Seven qualified directly through their top-100 world rankings, U.S.-based collegiate player Tarvet came through qualifying and a further 15 were handed wildcards. With Draper not in action until Tuesday, British women's number one Raducanu was the main attraction, although home loyalties were somewhat split as she faced 17-year-old Welsh wildcard Mimi Xu, making her Grand Slam debut. Xu had not beaten a top 50 player and never looked likely to break that duck on Number One court as she went down 6-3 6-3. Raducanu, desperate for a deep run in her home slam after a previous best of two fourth-round exits, did not have to do anything too extraordinary against a rival who for a while seemed intimidated by the occasion. After Xu swung wildly for a rare air shot and then tumbled to the pristine turf after a slip, the 318th-ranked teen got what no young player wants to hear - some sympathy applause. Raducanu swept to the first set, dropping only three points in her four service games, and with a lack of tension on court, the obligatory 'come on Britain' shout drew the usual ripple of Wimbledon laughter usually reserved for any lingering pigeon. Xu settled in the second set, however, finally getting to grips with the Raducanu serve during a run of five successive breaks, but the favourite got back on track to come through. FLYING START Raducanu, Katie Boulter and Kartal were all in the top 50 last week, the first time three British women have been ranked that high since 1986, and Kartal got the day off to a flier by beating ex-French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 7-5 2-6 6-2. She fought back from 4-1 down to win the first set before Ostapenko, a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2018 and quarter-finalist last year, hit back to take the second. However, the Latvian's famed inconsistency showed up again in the third as Kartal stormed to a 5-0 lead and, after a minor wobble, finished it off. "I was happy to be first up," Kartal said. "I guess the other (British) guys that are coming out can maybe get a bit of motivation from my win." It was also a good day, though not as lucrative, for Tarvet as the British qualifier beat Switzerland's Leandro Riedi 6-4 6-4 6-4 for his first win in a Grand Slam tournament. The 21-year-old's reward is a Centre Court meeting with holder Carlos Alcaraz but, win or lose, he will go home with only $10,000 plus expenses due to the rules surrounding student athletes in the United States, where he goes to college. All other second-round losers will take home 99,000 pounds ($135,000) in prize money. Britain's Cameron Norrie got past Roberto Bautista Agut in four sets and Bill Harris was an impressive straight-sets winner over Serbian Lucky Loser Dusan Lajovic, but British number two Jacob Fearnley went down in three against Brazil's Joao Fonseca. Fourth seed Draper, one of 13 Britons in the men's draw, is the biggest home hope since Andy Murray and kicks off his campaign against Argentine Sebastian Baez on Tuesday.
