Pakistani pilot among two killed in UAE plane crash

A Pakistani pilot and her companion, 26-year-old Indian doctor Sulaymaan Al Majid, were killed when a light aircraft crashed off the coast of Ras Al Khaimah on Thursday, December 26.
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) confirmed the incident on Sunday and stated that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash, as reported by

According to Sulaymaan's father, Majid Mukarram, the crash occurred shortly after takeoff at 2 pm near the Cove Rotana Hotel, close to the beach. Sulaymaan, who was born and raised in the UAE, had hired the aircraft for sightseeing.
His family, including his father, mother, and younger brother, were at the aviation club to watch his flight. Sulaymaan's younger brother was scheduled to take the next flight.
Initially, Majid was told that the glider had lost radio contact. He later learned that the aircraft had made an emergency landing and that the occupants were taken to the hospital.
"When we reached the hospital, we were told that both were critically injured and undergoing resuscitation efforts," Majid recalled. "Sulaymaan passed away before we could see him, and his time of death was recorded as past 4:30 pm."
The tragedy has left the family devastated. "We were looking forward to the New Year as a family, planning to celebrate together. Instead, our lives have been shattered. It feels like time has stopped for us. Sulaymaan was the light of our lives, and we don't know how to move forward without him," Majid added.
Sulaymaan was a clinical fellow at the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust in the UK and had been an active member of the British Medical Association.
He had served as the Honorary Secretary and later as the Co-Chair of the Northern Resident Doctors Committee, where he advocated for pay restoration and the reclassification of "junior doctors" to "resident doctors."
The family, based in Sharjah, is preparing for Sulaymaan's funeral, which will take place at Al Ghusai graveyard at 8.15 pm on Sunday. His younger brother shared the tragic news on Instagram, requesting privacy during this difficult time.
Sulaymaan was a graduate of Dubai Scholars School and was remembered as a bright, ambitious individual with a passion for medicine and advocacy.
The GCAA has stated that its Air Accident Investigation Sector has received a report on the crash and that investigation teams and relevant authorities are continuing their work. The GCAA extended its condolences to the families and relatives of the victims.
This crash follows another aviation incident in the UAE last month, in which a flight instructor was killed when a training aircraft lost radar contact 20 minutes after takeoff and crashed. The instructor's body was later found on the shores of Fujairah.

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Health Ministry and the Punjab Health department have decided to join hands for stronger, safer, and smarter healthcare services. The major development for national health collaboration came here on Thursday during a high-level meeting between Federal Minister for Health Mustafa Kamal and Punjab Minister for Primary and Secondary Healthcare Khawaja Imran Nazir. He stated that under the direction of the prime minister, particular focus is being placed on eliminating polio and ensuring timely implementation of health programmes. 'The fight against polio continues with full zeal, until the virus is eliminated, our children remain at risk,' he emphasised. He shared plans for a new national strategy for polio eradication and urged parents to disregard negative propaganda and ensure their children are vaccinated. 'In Palestine, even during war, mothers call for vaccinators with whistles. Pakistani mothers must also play their part in protecting their children,' he said. Kamal highlighted steps being taken by DRAP to combat counterfeit medicines, including the rollout of a modern barcode system. This will enable every medicine to carry a unique code that patients can scan to verify authenticity and price. Additionally, export certifications such as GMP, CoPP, and NOCs are now being processed online via the Pakistan Single Window, and all regulatory submissions are handled through the new 'e-App' online platform. Provincial Minister Khawaja Imran Nazir reaffirmed Punjab's full support for the federal government's health agenda. 'Punjab has greater capacity and resources, and we are ready to share these to benefit all provinces. The health of our people must come before all else,' he stated. He also praised DRAP's initiatives under the leadership of Minister Kamal, particularly, those targeting counterfeit pharmaceuticals. The two ministers agreed on the importance of coordinated measures to prevent dengue outbreaks in Islamabad and Rawalpindi and committed to united efforts in disease prevention, vaccination campaigns, and health system strengthening. Doctors reject imposition of professional tax
Various medics associations in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have rejected professional tax imposed on doctors by the provincial government of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). President of the Pakistan Doctors Council K-P chapter, Dr Majid, addressed a joint press conference at the Peshawar Press Club Wednesday alongside leaders from doctors' organizations, including Dr Janbaz Afridi of the Peoples Doctors Forum, Dr Adil of the Young Doctors Association, and Dr Wasim of the Allied Doctors. Dr Majid strongly condemned the provincial government of PTI for imposing an oppressive professional tax on doctors. He said the Doctors Council categorically rejects this tax and has formed a three-member committee to negotiate with the government for its immediate withdrawal. He also demanded the cessation of ongoing actions related to this tax. The council called on the government to immediately revoke letters issued by the Excise and Taxation Department directing deductions from doctors' salaries, particularly concerning finance directors and accountants of Medical Teaching Institutes (MTIs) in K-P. He further demanded salary increases for all doctors in the province, including house officers, trainee medical officers, and medical officers, in keeping with the current inflation rate in the provincial budget. He urged the Health Care Commission to immediately stop imposing heavy fines on doctors under the pretext of registration and to develop a proper, consultative procedure for such matters. Highlighting ongoing harassment of doctors over drug sales licenses, Majid demanded a halt to these practices and urged the government to implement court rulings favoring doctors in this regard. The president criticized the Public Service Commission (PSC) for not advertising any job vacancies since 2017, calling it a grave injustice to aspiring medical professionals. He demanded that job postings resume immediately to recruit new doctors.

Govt vows full support for pharma sector, announces export issues desk
Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan on Wednesday reaffirmed the government commitment to boosting pharmaceutical exports, announcing the establishment of an empowered Pharma Export Promotion Council, PharmEx Pakistan, under the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, according to a ministry statement. The minister's remarks came during a presentation by Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association (PPMA) Chairman Touqeer ul Haq, who briefed him on the formation of Pharmax Pakistan, a public-private initiative to promote and manage pharmaceutical exports, the Commerce Ministry said. 'The pharmaceutical sector has huge export potential, and PharmEx Pakistan is just one or two steps away from becoming operational,' the minister said. He appreciated the industry's rapid progress and assured continued government facilitation to achieve global export targets. Centralised fund: pharma sector urges govt to let it utilise 1% of profit on in-house R&D activities On trade with Afghanistan, he stated, 'With every passing day, our relations are growing stronger and more streamlined – pharmaceutical exports will rise accordingly.' Chairman Touqeer ul Haq praised the minister's prompt action in addressing critical issues, stating it helped the industry avoid major financial losses. He added that Pharmax Pakistan has the potential to raise pharmaceutical exports from USD 700 million to USD 3 billion. The initiative builds on strong sectoral growth, with exports rising from USD 270 million in 2020–21 to USD 355 million in 2024–25, as noted in the latest industry figures. Pharma bodies decry being ignored by SCQB Touqeer ul Haq also called for better facilitation of exports to Afghanistan, a key market, and welcomed the minister's assurance of focused policy coordination. Pharmax Pakistan is expected to serve as a dedicated platform to enhance regulatory compliance, market access, and international outreach for Pakistani pharmaceutical products. The minister assured the association of the Ministry's commitment to resolve the issues faced by the exporters and announced the establishment of a dedicated Exporter Facilitation Desk in the Ministry to help the export industry with critical matters requiring urgent intervention of the Government.
