Trunk-and-run: Wild elephant raids grocery store in Thailand

A grocery store in north-eastern Thailand had a larger-than-life freeloader – a wild elephant who casually strolled in to snack on some sweet treats before making an exit.
The male elephant, named Plai Biang Lek, is well-known among locals near Khao Yai national park – about 200km from Bangkok – for his habit of venturing into nearby human settlements.
He had previously wondered into a nearby village and raided a small eatery for food.
However, his latest intrusion on June 2 marks the first time he has entered a grocery store.
Videos and pictures on social media showed the elephant inside the packed store, munching on snacks while his head and body brushed against the ceiling. After satisfying his craving, he strolled out.
The shop owner, known as Ploy, told Thai media that she was serving customers when the elephant ambled into the shop at 3pm that day, causing people to flee for their safety.
She contacted officers from the national park, who arrived and tried to shoo it away.
Undeterred, the elephant continued to look for food and scoffed down sweet, crispy Thai snacks and chicken eggs , reported Thai daily Khaosod English.
His snack selection was interesting, the newspaper said, as elephants usually prefer salty food when raiding human settlements.
The report added that the shop owner suffered 1,000 baht (S$39.53) in damage.

Each side has since routinely accused the other of attacking the plant and posing a threat to nuclear safety. Monitors from the International Atomic Energy Agency reported hearing at least five explosions between 11:30 a.m. and 13:45 p.m. local time, each preceded by gunfire, an IAEA statement said. The statement gave no indication of the origin of the drones and said there were no reports of any damage to the centre. "Drones flying close to nuclear power plants could threaten their safety and security, with potentially serious consequences," IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said. "As I have stated repeatedly during the war, such incidents must stop immediately." The statement said it was the fourth time this year that the training centre, located just outside the site perimeter, was reportedly targeted by drones. The plant's Russian management had earlier said Ukrainian drones had landed on the roof of the training center in "yet another attack" on the facility. It said there had been no casualties or damage. The Zaporizhzhia station, with all its reactors in shut down mode, produces no electricity. Before the war, it generated one-fifth of Ukraine's electricity. Grossi last week told Reuters that while Russia had "never hidden the fact" that it wanted to restart the plant, this could not be done soon as it lacked water for cooling and a stable power supply. Ms Bryana Bongolan, a friend of Combs' former girlfriend Casandra Ventura, testified on June 4 that Combs in September 2016 held her over the rail of the balcony at Ventura's apartment and then threw her onto the balcony's furniture, causing her bruises. Prosecutors say the incident was among several violent acts that Combs, 55, took against Ventura and people close to her during the decade he was coercing Ventura to take part in drug-fuelled sexual performances with male sex workers known as "freak offs." Combs has pleaded not guilty to five counts including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. He could face life in prison if convicted on all counts. Ms Bongolan had not stated the exact date of the alleged balcony attack during her testimony on June 4. Jurors on June 4 saw a picture Ms Bongolan took of a bruise on her leg taken on Sept 26, 2016. A civil lawsuit Ms Bongolan filed against Combs in 2024 said the incident took place "on or about Sept 26, 2016."
