Gaza doctors give their own blood to patients gunned down seeking aid

GENEVA : Doctors in the Gaza Strip are donating their own blood to save their patients after scores of Palestinians were gunned down while trying to get food aid, the medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said today.
Around 100 MSF staff protested outside the UN headquarters in Geneva against an aid distribution system in Gaza run by an Israeli-backed private company, which has led to chaotic scenes of mass carnage.
'People need the basics of life…they also need it in dignity,' MSF Switzerland's director general, Stephen Cornish, told Reuters at the protest.
'If you're fearing for your life, running with packages being mowed down, this is just something that is completely beyond everything we've ever seen,' he said. 'These attacks have killed dozens…They were left to bleed out on the ground.'
Cornish said staff at one of the hospitals where MSF operates had to give blood as most Palestinians are now too poorly nourished to donate.
Israel allowed the private Gaza Humanitarian Foundation to begin food distribution in Gaza last week, after having completely shut the Gaza Strip to all supplies since the beginning of March.
Gaza authorities say at least 102 Palestinians were killed and nearly 500 wounded trying to get aid from the food distribution sites in the first eight days.
Eyewitnesses have said Israeli forces fired on crowds. The Israeli military said Hamas militants were to blame for opening fire, though it acknowledged that on Tuesday, when at least 27 people died, that its troops had fired at 'suspects' who approached their positions.
The US vetoed a UN Security Council resolution on Wednesday supported by all other Council members, which would have called for an 'immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire' in Gaza and unhindered access for aid.

'Access to the hospital is obstructed, preventing new patients from reaching care, and leading to more preventable deaths,' the World Health Organization's director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus posted on X. Tedros said two emergency medical teams – one local, the other international – 'are still doing their best to serve the remaining patients with the limited medical supplies left on the premises.' 'With the closure of Al-Amal, Nasser Medical Complex is now the only remaining hospital with an intensive care unit in Khan Younis,' he said. The WHO said June 5 that al-Nasser and Al-Amal hospitals were unable to fully treat the wounded that continue to pour in because of serious shortages of medicines and medical supplies after two months of total blockade. Israeli authorities have recently allowed in some humanitarian aid, but way less than what is needed. Nearly 20 months of relentless war, triggered by Hamas' Oct 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, has created one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world, with civilians exhausted by bombardments, forced displacement and hunger.

Israeli gunfire kills 17 people near Gaza aid site

(EPA Images pic) CAIRO : Israeli gunfire killed at least 17 Palestinians and wounded dozens of others as thousands of displaced people approached an aid distribution site of the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) in central Gaza today, local health authorities said. Medics said the casualties were rushed at two hospitals, the Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat camp in central Gaza, and the Al-Quds in Gaza City, in the north. The Israeli military said they are looking into the incident. Last week it warned Palestinians not to approach routes leading to GHF sites between 6pm and 6am local time, describing these roads as closed military zones. There was no immediate GHF comment on today's incident. The GHF began distributing food packages in Gaza at the end of May, overseeing a new model of aid distribution which the United Nations says is neither impartial nor neutral. However, many Gazans say they have to walk for hours to reach the sites, meaning they have to start travelling well before dawn if they are to stand any chance of receiving food. While the GHF has said there have been no incidents at its so-called secure distribution sites, Palestinians seeking aid have described disorder and access routes to the sites have been beset by chaos and deadly violence. 'I went there at 2am hoping to get some food, on my way there, I saw people returning empty-handed, they said aid packages have run out in five minutes, this is insane and isn't enough,' said Mohammad Abu Amr, 40, a father of two. 'Dozens of thousands arrive from the central areas and from the northern areas too, some of them walked for over 20km, only to come back home with disappointment,' he told Reuters via a chat app. He said he heard the firing but didn't see what happened. Israel allowed limited UN-led operations to resume on May 19 after an 11-week blockade in the enclave of 2.3 million people, where experts have warned a famine looms. The UN has described the aid allowed into Gaza as 'drop in the ocean'. Witnesses said at least 40 trucks carrying flour for UN warehouses were looted by desperate displaced Palestinians as well as thieves near Nabulsi roundabout along the coastal road in Gaza City. The war erupted after Hamas-led rebels took 251 hostages and killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack, Israel's single deadliest day. Israel's military campaign has since killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to health authorities in Gaza, and flattened much of the coastal enclave.

Israeli fire kills 13 Palestinians in southern Gaza

(AP pic) GAZA CITY : Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli forces killed at least 13 Palestinians today, six of them in a shooting incident near a US-backed aid distribution centre in the territory's south. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that at around 7am, 'six people were killed and several others wounded by the forces of the Israeli occupation near the Al-Alam roundabout' in southern Gaza's Rafah area. Gazans have massed at Al-Alam almost daily since late May to collect humanitarian aid at a centre about 1km away, operated by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). Samir Abu Hadid, who was there early today, told AFP that thousands of people had gathered near the roundabout. 'As soon as some people tried to advance towards the aid centre, the Israeli occupation forces opened fire from armoured vehicles stationed near the centre, firing into the air and then at civilians,' Abu Hadid said. Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military said it was looking into the incident, the latest deadly fire near the Al-Alam aid point. The GHF began operations in late May as Israel partially eased a more than two-month blockade on the Gaza Strip. The United Nations, which has refused to cooperate with the GHF over neutrality concerns, has warned that Gaza's entire population of more than 2 million people was at risk of starvation. In the territory's north early today, Bassal said seven people were killed in an Israeli strike that hit a house near Gaza City's Al-Shifa hospital. The Israeli military said it was looking into the report.
