East-West Centre Alumni Association –Islamabad elects new leadership
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad chapter of the East-West Centre Alumni Association held its annual elections for the 2025-2026 terms, bringing together alumni to elect new leadership, said a press release.
A statement issued here said that elections were held through secret balloting under the supervision of the election committee. Nominees were required to submit their candidacy a day prior to the election, in accordance with the chapter's guidelines.
Afzal Khan Mandokhel was elected as the president with the majority of votes. He was an alumnus of the 26th New Generation Seminar, a three-country EWC programme held in Honolulu, Phnom Penh and Yangon in the year 2016.
Muhammad Ashraf was elected unopposed as Vice President, while Faiz Paracha, a journalist by profession, was elected as General Secretary. Faiz is an alumnus of the East-West Center's Cross-Border Reporting Fellowship between India and Pakistan (2022), held in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The newly elected executive committee members included Tahir Amin, Shakirullah, Ashfa Hashmi and Sanam Junejo. The election marked a continued tradition of democratic norms and transparency within the alumni network, the statement said.
Dr Faisal Arjumand, the founding president, along with the outgoing president and former federal secretary Abu Akif congratulated the new leadership.
Outgoing team members including, Tayyaba Gul, Dr Asad Ghuffran and Usman Rafique extended full support to the newly elected team.
The newly-elected President Afzal Khan Mandokhel stated his resolve to reinvigorate the EWCA Islamabad chapter to bring the US and Pakistan closer through people-to-people diplomacy and identify young leaders who could be nominated for EWC programmes.
General Secretary Faiz Paracha echoed the views, stating, 'We will work to transform the Islamabad chapter into a dynamic hub of ideas and action – connecting alumni through impactful initiatives, strategic collaborations and meaningful opportunities that reflect the EWC's global spirit right here in Pakistan.'
The centre is an education and research organisation established by the US Congress in 1960, to strengthen relations and understanding among the peoples of Asia, the Pacific and the United States. In 2021, EWC was ranked 4th in a University of Pennsylvania institute's annual list of best government-affiliated think tanks worldwide, as per the statement.

NCCIA busts int'l child abuse gang
ISLAMABAD: The National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has busted an international child exploitation gang in Muzaffargarh allegedly led by a German citizen, said State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry on Tuesday. Addressing at a press conference flanked by the Director General (DG) NCCIA Waqar Uddin Syed, the minister said that the gang was involved in the child sexual exploitation aged between 6 to 10 years old. This gang was involved in blackmailing children, especially those hailing from a poor community and uploading explicit videos of minors to the dark web, he said. The minister stated that the gang had set up a state-of-the-art fighting club, targeting young children, from which 10 minors have been rescued so far. Six of these children have already been handed over to the Child Protection Bureau for rehabilitation, he said, adding that the German national was the ringleader of the gang. Chaudhry said that, unfortunately, some parents are also found involved in these inhuman activities. 'In the club, the exploiters have installed modern gadgets and cameras for making videos of children,' he said, adding that NCCIA had conducted five-hour-long operations for busting the gang. He said that NCCIA has arrested two suspects, and three accused are still at large. The DG NCCIA said that the special branch Punjab had informed the agency about a foreign national frequently visiting a village in Muzaffargarh. Upon investigation, it was discovered that children were being filmed in an organised manner, he said, adding that a highly professional setup had been established, complete with modern cameras and lighting systems, to record these videos. Farmers warn govt against GST imposition on agri inputs
LAHORE: The Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) has warned the government against imposing general sales tax (GST) on agricultural inputs in the upcoming budget, stating that such a move would deal a final blow to the already struggling agricultural sector and further damage the national economy. 'The government should instead take immediate steps to reduce the cost of agricultural production,' said PKI President Khalid Mahmood Khokhar during a press conference on Monday. Khokhar accused the current leadership of pursuing policies that serve their political interests at the expense of farmers, causing irreparable damage to the sector and contributing to a sharp decline in crop production. 'Around the world, agriculture and food security are considered top priorities by governments. Unfortunately, in Pakistan, the sector is being undermined due to pressure from international financial institutions,' he said. Flanked by fellow PKI members, Khokhar highlighted the country's rapid population growth, warning that Pakistan is adding hundreds of thousands of mouths to feed every year. 'If we fail to stabilise and strengthen our agricultural system, we are heading toward catastrophe,' he warned. He further criticised the imbalance in taxation, noting that while there is no tax on imported cotton, locally grown cotton is subject to 18% GST. 'As a result, cotton production has plummeted from 14.7 million bales to just 5 million,' he said. He added that the country's import bill continues to swell due to the increasing reliance on imported food, while exports of key crops like mangoes, kinnow, and maize have halved in the past year. The PKI representatives emphasized that they are not seeking charity - only fair returns for their produce in line with international standards. 'Farmers should be able to earn a reasonable profit for their hard work,' they insisted. Khokhar painted a grim picture of farmers' current conditions, saying many are in rags and unable to apply adequate amounts of fertilizer or other inputs to their fields, resulting in declining per-acre yields. 'Farmers don't even have enough money to meet household expenses. Some have even had to postpone their daughters' weddings due to poor returns on their wheat crops,' he lamented. The PKI also rejected the Rs 15 billion relief package announced for wheat growers, calling it grossly insufficient against the estimated Rs 1,600 billion in losses.
