Arsenal success can spur Australia to continental title, says Catley
May 31 (Reuters) - Defender Steph Catley says her UEFA Women's Champions League title win with Arsenal last week will act as motivation to secure continental glory with Australia when the country hosts the Women's Asian Cup next year.
Catley and compatriots Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross were part of the Arsenal squad that defeated Barcelona in Lisbon last Sunday, before flying to Melbourne to feature in the Matildas' 2-0 win over Argentina on Friday.
The game was the first in a two-match series against the South Americans as the Australians continue preparations for the continent championship in March 2026, when they will attempt to win the Asian title for the first time in 16 years.
"I think it just gives you a little taste of what's possible," Catley said of the Champions League success.
"But to actually do it, it makes me think about my career and the things I really want to achieve, and winning silverware with the Matildas has always been top of my list.
"So, definitely, it makes me hungry. I've got a taste of trophies and (winning the Asian Cup) would mean a lot to me if we were able to do that.
"It's coming up now, it's very close so it's good for the three of us to have the taste of that and be able to lead that hunt for success for our team."
The Australians last won the Women's Asian Cup in 2010 with a victory over North Korea and have since finished as runners-up in 2014 and 2018 before exiting the 2022 edition in the quarter-finals.
And while the Matildas reached the semi-finals of the Women's World Cup on home soil in 2023, they were eliminated in the group phase of the Olympic Games last year, prompting coach Tony Gustavsson's departure.
The Swede has not been replaced on a permanent basis, with Tom Sermanni filling the role in an interim capacity, but Catley is confident the team is moving in the right direction as the Australians continue to unearth new playing talent.
"Maybe it hasn't been the most successful few years but we still believe we can achieve something special," said Catley.
"You see a player like Charli (Grant) come in tonight and she looks like she's been in the team for a few years, and we're still finding gems like that.
"I think coming into a major tournament, that's the most important thing that you can try to do, is have a bit of depth there and some competition."

Juventus 'eye Premier League boss' to be next manager after missing out on Conte
Juventus are considering another managerial change and - after being turned down by Antonio Conte - are looking at Fulham boss Marco Silva as he continues to impress Juventus are ready to go after Fulham boss Marco Silva as they continue their search for a new manager following a rejection from Antonio Conte. The Italian giants are no longer the force they once were and are scouring the market for a new manager. They are open to replacing Igor Tudor - who they hired as Thiago Motta's successor in March. Juventus have already been snubbed by former boss Conte and Gian Piero Gasperini, who has just announced he will leave Atalanta after a successful period. He's secured comfortable mid-table finishes as his stock continues to rise. Sky Sports in Italy report that Juventus have had initial contact with Silva's camp and that their incoming general director Damien Comolli is an admirer of the Portuguese boss, who is yet to take charge of an elite European club. Silva's contract expires next summer and he has impressed in a four-year tenure in the capital as he's continually been linked with vacancies elsewhere. However he did claim that he sees himself as Fulham's manager next season. On the final day he said: "I am under contract with the club and of course I've been in planning with the board (for) next season. Everything on track and the plan is there. We have the next two months to prepare for the season as best we can. If I'm under contract with the club and if I'm planning with the club the next season, of course I expect to be here." Silva has previously resisted the temptation to head to Saudi Arabia, where there is serious interest in him. Al-Hilal previously tabled a mega £40million two-year deal, but he chose to remain at Craven Cottage. Juventus have been unable to tempt Conte back to the club. Their dominance of Italian football began when Conte was in charge but he's since moved on and excelled elsewhere. Man Utd tipped to beat Arsenal to Benjamin Sesko transfer due to 'secret weapon'
RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko could be on the move this summer with the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal, Juventus and AC Milan all linked with a move for the 21-year-old Manchester United's director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, could prove to be a secret weapon in the club's pursuit of Benjamin Sesko. The RB Leipzig striker is hot property across Europe, with the likes of United, Arsenal, Juventus and AC Milan all interested in Sesko. The 21-year-old has scored 39 goals in 87 games across all competitions since joining Leipzig in 2022 and the Bundesliga side are said to be willing to sell him this summer for a fee of around £75million. Although United are unable to offer Sesko European football next season, it has been claimed that the player's relationship with Vivell could help their cause. According to BILD, Vivell helped discover Sesko when he was RB Salzburg's head of scouting. Salzburg signed Sesko from Slovenian club Domzale as a 16-year-old prospect in 2019 and it is claimed that Vivell could be a 'secret weapon' for United. Vivell is also said to have personally scouted Sesko for United in April. Despite the club missing out on a spot in the Champions League and the riches that come with that by losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final, chief executive Omar Berrada has insisted United are ready to back Ruben Amorim in the transfer market. "We speak to Ruben very frequently," Berrada told TNT Sports earlier this year. "Ruben has a good relationship with Jason Wilcox. They both share the vision of how they want to see the team playing. "It is about planning properly for the summer transfer window and having a clear idea of what players we want to bring in. We're making some big efforts to get us in the best financial position. Even if we're outside of Europe - I think we will be in a position to invest in the squad." Amorim also recently opened up about United's transfer plans while on the club's post-season tour, claiming that the team will improve over the summer. "We always prepare two plans: one with Champions League, one without Champions League," he explained. 'Without Champions League, we don't need a big squad, we can control the squad in a better way. Then we have a plan that is to bring some new players, of course. But our big plan is to improve the team that we have, is to improve our academy, because I think that is the future. "It was the past, so can be the future. It's not going to change so much because we have the financial fair play rules. We are not allowed to do much this summer, even with Champions League, so we are prepared for that. "It's important to stick together. We are going to struggle, it is not going to be everything right away but I have a feeling and I see the team improving and that is the most important thing."
