Vietnam seizes fake Rolex, Prada items in counterfeit crackdown, state media reports
HANOI: Vietnamese authorities have seized thousands of fake products, including imitation Rolex watches and Prada handbags, during a raid at a shopping mall in business hub Ho Chi Minh City, state media reported today.
The raid at Saigon Square Shopping Mall comes as Vietnam steps up its fight against counterfeits and digital piracy, after the United States accused the country of being a major hub for these illegal activities and threatened crippling tariffs.
Earlier in May Reuters reported fake luxury goods were on display in the mall, which is on the list of "notorious markets for counterfeiting" published in January by the US Trade Representative.
The items seized also included alleged fake products of other brands, including Longines, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Hermes, state radio broadcaster VOV reported.
"All of these products show signs of counterfeiting genuine goods, seriously affecting the interests of consumers as well as the reputation of protected brands in Vietnam," the report cited the Trade Ministry's market surveillance department as saying.
An employee of the mall today confirmed the raid.
"We lease the space to the sellers and are not aware of the origins and authenticity of the products they sell," the employee, who declined to be named, said by phone.

Earlier, the MMEA had detained another foreign vessel and five Indonesians on board at a position 38 nm northwest of Kuala Suai, Miri. Khairol said the two vessels and crew, aged between 25 and 53, were then taken to the Miri Maritime Zone Complex in a journey which took nearly 18 hours due to rough weather over the long distance. According to him, the two boats with fishing and navigation equipment, worth a total of about RM3.3mil, were seized, while the crew members are being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985.- Bernama

MIRI (May 31): The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained two foreign fishing vessels for attempting to carry out illegal fishing activities off Miri yesterday. The vessels, from Indonesia and Vietnam respectively, were detected approximately 38 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Suai and 31 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Niah. MMEA Miri director Capt Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said the vessels were intercepted during Op Permai 01/2019, Op Naga Timur, and Op Tiris 3.0. 'The Indonesian vessel was detained at around 12pm, while the Vietnamese vessel was detected and detained at approximately 5.45pm following a public tip-off regarding its presence,' he said in a statement. During the attempt to intercept the Vietnamese vessel, the patrol crew encountered resistance as the foreign crew performed dangerous manoeuvres, putting the safety of the officers at risk. However, the situation was quickly brought under control, and the vessel was successfully detained without any injuries reported. A total of eight crew members, including two captains – five Indonesians and three Vietnamese aged between 25 and 53 – were taken into custody. All detainees were escorted to the Miri Vessel Detention Centre for further investigation. Mohd Khairol said the case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985, which provides for fines of up to RM6 million for captains and RM600,000 for each crew member involved in fishing without a permit or trespassing in Malaysian waters. 'The MMEA remains committed to enforcing the law in Malaysia's maritime zones and will not compromise with any offenders,' he added.
