TEHRAN: Firefighters have brought under control a blaze at Iran's main port, following a deadly explosion blamed on negligence, authorities in the Islamic republic said.
The explosion, heard dozens of kilometres (miles) away, hit a dock at the southern port of Shahid Rajaee on Saturday. At least 70 people were killed and more than 1,000 others suffered injuries in the blast and ensuing fire, which also caused extensive damage, state media reported.
Red Crescent official Mokhtar Salahshour told the channel late Monday that the fire had been "contained" and a clean-up was under way. State television aired live footage on Tuesday showing thick smoke rising from stacked containers.
Iran's customs authority said port operations had returned to normal, according to the IRNA news agency. The port of Shahid Rajaee lies near the major coastal city of Bandar Abbas on the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which one-fifth of global oil output passes.

Hormozgan provincial governor Mohammad Ashouri ruled out sabotage. "The set of hypotheses and investigations carried out during the process indicated that the sabotage theory lacks basis or relevance," he told state television late Monday.
The port's customs office said the blast may have started in a depot storing hazardous and chemical materials. Interior minister Eskandar Momeni said there were "shortcomings, including noncompliance with safety precautions and negligence". A committee assigned to investigate the blast cited similar factors as the likely cause.

'What Trump wants most is your fealty': Was Gavin Newsom crying while addressing Los Angeles protests? Watch video
Gavin Newsom was seemingly tearing up while addressing LA riots (Photo: X) California Governor Gavin Newsom appeared visibly emotional on Tuesday as he addressed the state for the first time since violent protests erupted in Los Angeles, with social media users speculating he was about to cry. The riots by thousands of people followed federal immigration raids and the deployment of the National Guard. With his voice shaking at times, Newsom pleaded with Californians to resist what he described as US President Donald Trump 's efforts to erode democracy. 'What Donald Trump wants most is your fealty, your silence, to be complicit in this moment,' he said. 'We all need to stand up and be held to a higher level of accountability.' The governor condemned the federal response to protests as illegal and inflammatory. 'These are the men and women trained for foreign combat, not domestic law enforcement,' he said, referring to the National Guard and Marines stationed in Los Angeles. 'Democracy is under assault before our eyes.' In the lead-up to the speech, Newsom had already labelled Trump's actions an 'assault on democracy' and said the militarisation of the city was unlawful. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? IC Markets Đăng ký Undo During his remarks, he doubled down on those claims, accusing the president of triggering chaos through sweeping deportation actions. 'On Saturday morning, when federal agents jumped out of an unmarked van near a Home Depot parking lot, they began grabbing people. A deliberate targeting of a heavily Latino suburb,' Newsom said. 'A U.S. citizen, nine months pregnant, was arrested. A four-year-old girl. Taken. Families separated.' He explained that the initial protests were within the bounds of normal public response. But when federal forces intervened, the situation quickly escalated. 'What then ensued was a use of tear gas, flashbang grenades, rubber bullets. Federal agents detaining people and undermining their due process rights.' Newsom acknowledged that some of the protests turned violent, citing vandalism and attacks on police officers. Over 220 arrests have been made so far, and more are expected. However, he argued that the president decided to involve military forces that 'fanned the flames," of protests. He also said that Trump was trying to dictate academic content and undermining the judicial system. 'What more evidence do we need than January 6th?' he asked. Newsom confirmed that his office sought an emergency court order to halt the deployment of federal forces in Los Angeles. However, a US federal judge denied his plea to block the National Guard from coming to the state.

‘Our life's savings stolen': North Kolkata family robbed of Rs 2 crore in night heist; while family asleep
KOLKATA: Burglars broke into a five-bedroom apartment in a building on Ultadanga Main Road close to Hudco crossing early on Monday and decamped with cash and jewellery worth Rs 2 crore. The family members, who were asleep during the break-in, told police they suspected insider involvement as the burglars were aware where the jewellery was kept and did not touch costly electronic items lying around. The apartment is owned by 62-year-old businessman Sushil Kumar Bajaj, whose son, Shubham, told police that the accused entered the first-floor apartment through a window in the prayer room after cutting and removing the iron grille. With the keys dangling in the almirah, the accused had no problem accessing the gold and diamond jewellery kept inside. Cops said a wedding had taken place at the house more than a year ago and the family members had not returned the jewellery to the bank locker. The break-in was discovered around 6.15 am when Shubham's mother noticed the window grille in the prayer room was missing. Besides Rs 2 lakh in cash, jewellery that were stolen included a gold set of necklace, earrings and bangles weighing 80-100 grams and valued at Rs 70 lakh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tukarkan Bitcoin dan Ethereum - Tanpa Dompet Diperlukan! 'These weren't just valuable items, they included family heirlooms,' said a family member. Shubham said he suspected an insider could be involved. 'They did not touch the electronic items that lay scattered around our flat. They knew where the almirah with the ornaments was and even ventured into the kitchen and ate some almonds,' he said. 'Our life's savings have been stolen. My father has serious heart ailments, and my mother is diabetic. We need to keep cash with us for sudden hospitalisations. Last month, too, my father spent days at a hospital in Alipore. I remain busy with my job. I married a few months ago and these were very much all we had as our savings,' he added. Police are examining footage from CCTV cameras in the neighbourhood and have deployed a forensic team to collect evidence from the crime scene, an investigating officer said. An FIR under BNS 305 (theft in a dwelling house) has been lodged at Ultadanga police station. The detective department is also helping with the probe. This incident has raised concerns about security in the Ultadanga area. Residents of neighbouring buildings expressed concern at the daring theft that took place despite the presence of family members in the house. Security has been tightened in the surrounding areas and cops have urged residents to enhance their security measures and install surveillance cameras.
