Explorer Tremor: Ford's SUV Gets a Dirt-Ready Makeover

Miami Herald2 days ago

Ford trimmed the Explorer lineup in 2025, from eight variants to just four: Active, ST-Line, ST, and Platinum, effectively dropping the Timberline trim. The decision was aimed at simplifying production, streamlining inventory, and sharpening the Explorer's market identity.
But while the new range covered versatility, sportiness, and luxury, something was missing: a truly rugged, trail-ready variant. That void is now filled with the arrival of the 2026 Ford Explorer Tremor.
Joining the Tremor family, which includes the F-150, Expedition, Super Duty, and Maverick, the Explorer finally gains off-road credentials to match its adventurous name. Replacing the discontinued Timberline model, the Tremor marks a more focused approach to outdoor capability, packaged in a midsize SUV that's still built for family use. More than just a styling package, the new Tremor trim is a functional evolution of the Explorer designed for mud, rocks, and everything in between.
Visually, the 2026 Explorer Tremor sets itself apart with a tough new look anchored by 18-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires. A signature Electric Spice accent highlights a wheel spoke and is mirrored on the front and rear tow hooks, adding a splash of color to its rugged stance. Ford also fitted auxiliary off-road lighting, and although it hasn't published the approach and departure angles, they've been improved for trail use.
An off-road-tuned suspension with recalibrated springs and sway bars raises the ride height by an inch, giving the Tremor better ground clearance. Underbody protection at both ends shields vital components from trail hazards.
Inside, the Tremor blends function with premium features. The cabin includes Ford's latest Digital Experience interface, standard Copilot 360 Assist 2.0, and optional BlueCruise 1.5 for hands-free highway driving. Other high-end amenities – like massaging front seats and a 14-speaker B&O sound system – remind drivers that off-roaders can still have creature comforts.
Under the hood, buyers can choose between two EcoBoost engines. The standard 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four delivers 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, while those craving more punch can opt for the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, shared with the Explorer ST and Ranger Raptor, producing 400 hp and 415 lb-ft. Both engines are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system with a Torsen limited-slip differential.
The 2026 Ford Explorer Tremor is set to arrive in dealerships later this year. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but expect it to land between the ST-Line and Platinum trims. For families looking to trade pavement for trails, the Tremor finally gives the Explorer real off-road substance.

Trump wins over lifelong Democrat autoworker with 'big, beautiful bill' vehicle loan tax benefit

President Donald Trump recognized a third-generation autoworker from Michigan Thursday while speaking at the "big, beautiful event," noting he was a lifelong Democrat who now supports the president because of vehicle loan interest tax benefits. The president spoke about the "big, beautiful bill" from the East Room of the White House with a group of people standing behind him who represented various trades, including food delivery, farmers and automotive workers. One of the workers standing behind Trump was James Benson, a third-generation autoworker from Belleville, Michigan, who has been with Ford Motor Company for 26 years. Trump introduced Benson, noting that Ford has "a lot of plants" in the U.S. "If you have plants in this country, you're going to make a lot of money," the president said, adding that he loves autoworkers. Trump also said Benson was a lifelong Democrat until 2017, when he saw the benefits of the tax laws. Trump then spoke about his latest plan to benefit car owners by making interest on car payments fully tax-deductible. But the deduction would only be for cars made in the U.S., Trump said, adding if it was made someplace else, "we don't care." Trump's "big, beautiful bill" would create a new deduction of up to $10,000 for qualified passenger vehicle loan interest in a given taxable year. The deduction would phase out when a taxpayer's modified adjusted gross income exceeds $100,000. Applicable passenger vehicles include cars, trucks, vans, SUVs and motorcycles that have been manufactured for use on public streets, roads and freeways and for which the final assembly occurs in the U.S. The bill defines the final assembly as the process by which the manufacturer produces a vehicle and delivers it to a dealer with all the parts necessary for operation. As is the case with the overtime and tips deductions, the auto loan provision would be in effect for tax years 2025 through 2028. Trump reiterated to those in attendance that the tax benefit is only for vehicles made in the U.S. "Remember that, James. We're going to keep those Michigan auto factories roaring," the president said.

The Ford Escape Isn't Dead Yet. But These Six States Can't Buy One

Rumors of the Ford Escape's demise have been greatly exaggerated. Two years ago, reports suggested that Ford's compact SUV wouldn't live to see the next few years , yet the Blue Oval still sells a new model here and now in 2025. Now it's being reported that the Escape will live on until 2026—but with a few caveats. According to a report from Ford Authority , Ford will sell a 2026 model-year Escape, but not in every state in the US. With stricter emissions standards in certain parts of the country, customers reportedly won't be able to buy or register a new Escape in six different states. The Escape still uses the same 1.5-liter and 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder gas engines that it debuted with in 2020. It also packs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder plug-in hybrid unit—all of which are reportedly ineligible. It should be noted that Ford hasn't officially confirmed this report, but we've reached out to the company for a statement. Which States? Six states allegedly won't allow you to register a 2026 Ford Escape since it has a 'non-California' compliant emissions system. Customers living in those states who are interested in a new Escape will have to buy one for the 2025 model year. For 2026, the Escape will not meet the emissions standards of these six states: California Massachusetts New York Oregon Vermont Washington California, notoriously, has some of the strictest emissions standards in the entire country courtesy of the Clean Air Act. Other states, like New York and Massachusetts, follow a similar set of rules. Unfortunately for Ford, the Escape's dated powertrain doesn't meet many of those required standards. The Escape Still Sells Well Although it's been widely reported that Ford would discontinue the Escape, the compact SUV soldiers on into the new year with solid sales figures. In 2024, Ford sold 146,859 examples of the Escape SUV, marking a 4.2 percent increase over the previous year. Already in 2025, Ford Escape sales are up. The company sold 37,357 examples in the first quarter of this year, an increase of just about two percent over the previous year. In recent years, the Escape has been a relatively big seller for Ford. The company moved more than 300,000 units of the Escape annually between 2014 and 2017, and well over 200,000 units annually between 2018 and 2019. The last few years haven't been as successful, but the Escape remains a popular compact SUV despite rumors of its demise.
