Spain World Cup 2030 chief resigns after stadium fix allegation: Reports - World

Al-Ahram Weekly26-03-2025

Spain's head of World Cup 2030 organisation resigned Wednesday after being accused of fixing the process to decide which stadiums would host matches to favour one city, reported Spanish media.
Maria Tato stood down from her post at the Spanish football federation (RFEF) following a report published by newspaper El Mundo which said ratings for potential venues were altered to favour Anoeta in San Sebastian, at the expense of Balaidos in Vigo.
"On 25 June 2024, Balaidos was among the 11 venues (in Spain), but on 27 June the list was modified," complained mayor of Vigo, Abel Caballero, on X this week.
"This is extremely serious, we demand that they explain to us who changed it, why and with what criteria."
The RFEF did not respond to an AFP request for comment.
The federation announced last year that Spain would have 11 venues at the tournament, including Barcelona's rebuilt Camp Nou stadium and Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu, while co-hosts Portugal have three and Morocco six.
The RFEF has been hit with various crises in recent years.
Former president Luis Rubiales resigned in disgrace in September 2023 after forcibly kissing Women's World Cup star Jenni Hermoso on the lips following Spain's triumph in Sydney.
His successor Pedro Rocha was suspended for overstepping his duties after initially arriving on an interim basis, with Rafael Louzan taking the reins in December 2024.

Neymar Tests Positive for COVID-19

Israa Farhan Brazilian football star Neymar has tested positive for COVID-19, according to a statement released by Santos FC and reported by Brazilian media. The 33-year-old forward, who rejoined his boyhood club earlier this season, showed symptoms last Thursday and was immediately sidelined from all team activities. Medical tests confirmed Neymar's infection, though the club has not yet disclosed how long he will be out of action. Santos did not respond to Reuters' request for further comment. Neymar was already set to miss Santos' upcoming match against Fortaleza this Thursday due to suspension. That fixture will be the club's final game before the Brazilian league pauses for the FIFA Club World Cup, which takes place in the United States from June 15 to July 13. The former Barcelona and PSG star's future at Santos remains uncertain, with his current contract set to expire on June 30. Despite struggling with injuries throughout his return season, Neymar has made 12 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and providing three assists. read more Japan Stun Spain 2-1 to Qualify for World Cup Last 16 World Cup 2022: Get to Know Confirmed Line-ups of Japan and Spain Group E Decider Saudi Arabia Bid Farewell to World Cup after 2-1 Loss to Mexico Tunisia Achieve Historic Win over France but Fail to Qualify Tunisia to Clash against France in World Cup Sports Get to Know Squad of Group D Teams in World Cup Sports Al Ahly Gift EGP 70,000 to Players After Claiming Egyptian Super Cup Title Sports Bencharki Hits First 2 Goals with Al Jazira Since Leaving Zamalek Sports Arsenal Possible Line-up for Nottingham Forest News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan

Mbappe steers France to win over Germany in Nations League - World

Kylian Mbappe led France to Nations League consolation before Spain and Portugal play the final on Sunday. The Real Madrid star scored one goal and set up the other as France defeated host nation Germany 2-0 in the third-place decider. Aurelien Tchouameni set up club teammate Mbappe to score just before the break after Germany had dominated the first half, and Mbappe set up substitute Michael Olise to seal the result in the 84th after a much-improved second-half performance from the visitors. France coach Didier Deschamps had made his lack of enthusiasm for the game clear the day before, noting his team had little to gain from playing it, and it was apparent which side was more motivated in front of the Stuttgart fans. Germany missed a host of chances then had Deniz Undav's equalizer ruled out for a foul by Niclas Füllkrug in the buildup. France was without injured Paris Saint-Germain star Ousmane Dembélé. Both sides were forced to play for the consolation prize after losing their semifinals. Germany lost 2-1 to Portugal on Wednesday before France lost 5-4 to European champion Spain on Thursday. Spain was playing Portugal later in Munich. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.) I returned to Ahly for more achievements: Winger Trezeguet - Egyptian Football

Ahly's returning star winger Mahmoud 'Trezeguet' Hassan says he didn't hesitate to accept the offer to rejoin the Cairo giants, insisting that his return is to secure more achievements, not only playing at the anticipated Club World Cup. In late January, Ahly announced the signing of their former player Trezeguet from Turkish side Trabzonspor on a five-year deal starting this summer. "There weren't previous negotiations to join Ahly. I am a fan of the club before being a player. I had my own ambitions to play abroad, and I already did what I wanted, but once I received a call from Ahly President Mahmoud El-Khatib telling me the club needed me, everything was over immediately," Trezeguet told ON Sport TV channel on Saturday. "Firstly, Trabzonspor asked for a huge amount for the transfer, but I said I would play for Ahly or wouldn't play football again," he added. The 30-year-old returned to his boyhood club this summer after a decade-long spell abroad that included stints with Anderlecht, Aston Villa, Kasimpasa, Trabzonspor, İstanbul Başakşehir, and Qatar's Al-Rayyan, where he spent the last season on loan. Returning to the Egyptian league wasn't a choice for Trezeguet at the time being, as he had already received lucrative offers from other Egyptian clubs, but he refused, preferring to join the Reds again. "I chose to rejoin Ahly despite receiving offers with triple my current salary. My return wasn't only for the Club World Cup, as the contract runs for five years. I didn't want to return to Ahly at the age of retirement, but to achieve more goals here," the Egyptian international explained. The first edition of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup, which will kick off on 14 June, will be the first test for Trezeguet with Ahly, and according to him, the players will do their best to please the fans. The African giants, drawn in Group A alongside Palmeiras (Brazil), FC Porto (Portugal), and Inter Miami (USA), kick off the tournament against the American side on Sunday, 15 June. "I say to our fans, you can dream of winning all tournaments, even the Club World Cup. Ahly taught us to dream. We know that the mission will be difficult, but the players have the quality and determination and will do their best," he concluded. Ahly made several high-profile signings this summer, including Tunisian midfielder Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane and the return of Malian international Aliou Dieng, alongside Trezeguet. Amid their current training camp in Miami, Ahly will be facing Mexican club Pachuca in a friendly match on Sunday night.
