Former Studiocanal Boss Didier Lupfer Teams With Édouard Boccon-Gibod, Tariq Krim to Launch Media Company With AI-Enhanced Projects (EXCLUSIVE)
After helming Studiocanal and co-founding Ubisoft's film and TV division, Didier Lupfer has joined forces with former TF1 head Édouard Boccon-Gibod and tech entrepreneur Tariq Krim to launch The Media Company, a production outfit that's tapping into artificial intelligence.
Over at The Media Company, every film and TV project will be developed and produced using a variety of AI tools which Lupfer, Boccon-Gibod and Krim said will help creative teams develop the scripts efficiently, fast-track production thanks to previsualization and optimize budgets. Krim, who launched AI Netvibes, Jolicloud and Dissident AI), said the banner will be using a wide range of sophisticated AI softwares.

The Media Company's first project in development is 'Jules Verne contre Nemo,' a 1882-set detective thriller based on a bestseller by Céline Ghys and penned by Victoria Musiedlak and Julien Despaux ('Paris Police 1910'). The latter will also direct. The outfit is also developing a mainstream comedy, La Fille du Terrassier, written by Guillaume Clicquot and directed by Olivier Baroux whose filmmaking credits include 'Les Tuche,' one the highest grossing French comedy franchises in recent history.
On 'Jules Verne contre Nemo,' for instance, Lupfer said AI is being used very early in the process. 'After optioning the book, our creative AI experts started generating proposals based on the text, and that included visualizing characters, the articulation between them, and the visual universes of different locations described in the book, such as the train station, canals and streets in Amiens, and Verne's residence,' said Lupfer. 'Every time it gives you new ideas and makes it very easy to produce 2D and 3D scenery.'
Krim pointed out that a large variety of generative AI tools are already available today but are often used to produce bland work. 'The question is how we use them to continue to make art and to make creative things and not just products,' he says. As such, the company's task will be 'detect the talents of people who know how to use the tools and who have not only technical competence but also taste and a desire to use these tools to do something other than generic things,' Krim said.
Lupfer, who notably produced 'Assassin's Creed' and the toon TV franchise 'Raving Rabbids' while at Ubisoft,' argues that 'European cinema has the opportunity to use AI to distinguish itself from American productions.' He says that while 'the film industry is still based on artisanal processes, we at The Media Company are part of a new generation of producers who use the latest tools: forecasts, budget optimization and creative AI agents.' Ultimately, the idea behind the banner, Lupfer says, is to build a 'new film dynamic in Europe capable of attracting investment and producing works of international stature.'
Boccon-Gibod brings a wealth of expertise and relationships in the industry and beyond. Throughout his career, he served as head of EuropaCorp USA, worked at Christie's France, served as chairman and CEO of Publications Metro France and executive chairman of TF1 Production.
'There is a fairly widespread view that AI is against creators and is destroying jobs, and our bet is to prove the opposite. We think that it will help to produce more films,' said Boccon-Gibod.Best of Variety

The Scott Pilgrim Game Is Getting A Spiritual Successor Over 15 Years Later And It Looks Awesome
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game was a 2010 downloadable movie tie-in that turned out to be an incredible beat 'em up, helping to lead an arcade gaming revival on console. Scott Pilgrim Ex is a spiritual successor to that project that's getting the band back together for another River City Ransom-esque smash-fest down memory lane when it comes to PC and consoles in 2026. The pitch is simple: run around the streets of Toronto as Scott, Ramona, and company beating up bad guys, completing quests, getting stronger, and trying to pick up every nearby object to see if it can be used as a lethal weapon against three rival factions consisting of Vegans, Robots, and Demons. There's up to four-player co-op online, and it sounds like a somewhat nonlinear story will allow players to explore a segmented map consisting of various streets, stores, and alleyways with a high degree of non-linear freedom. There will be seven playable characters, each with their full move lists unlocked from the start of the game, with an emphasis on combos and chucking everything from turnips to other enemies. The debut trailer at Summer Game Fest Live showed off a colorful urban playground full of slick combat animations. The backgrounds aren't bursting with quite the same level of detail and depth as those in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, though that may come closer to launch. You can judge for yourself: The original game was an incredible mashup of old-school inspirations, from exuberant pixel art to chip tune rock medleys, that paid tribute to a series of graphic novels about post-school slackers navigating social drama and paranormal supervillains using video game logic. It was also made by Ubisoft and remained trapped on old consoles until 2021 when the French publisher and Universal managed to untangle the licensing rights and port it to modern platforms. Some of the people who made the original Scott Pilgrim game, including its game play designer Jonathan Lavigne, left Ubisoft to found the indie retro powerhouse Tribute Games, best known for Mercenary Kings and, more recently, making Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge with Dotemu. In addition to Scott Pilgrim EX, it's also working on the Marvel arcade brawler Cosmic Invasion, coming out later this year. 'Scott Pilgrim EX is the culmination of years of experience working on brawlers combined with our intimate knowledge of Scott Pilgrim,' Lavigne said in a press release. 'It's a full-circle moment for us. The original founders of Tribute Games all worked on the first video game incarnation of Scott Pilgrim before launching the studio in 2011. Coming back to this world feels like the most natural thing ever. This game is about friendship, our love of video games, music, and hitting robots in the face with a volleyball. It's full of lore, references, easter eggs and passion. It's the Scott Pilgrim game fans have been waiting for.' In addition to retaining some of the talent from the first game, Tribute is reuniting with renowned pixel artist Paul Robertson and the 8-bit band Anamanaguchi. Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O'Malley will consult on a new original story in that universe along with Scott Pilgrim Takes Off showruner Ben David Grabinski (the Netflix series sadly didn't get renewed for a second season). That's what I mean about getting the band back together, and I can't wait. . For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Ubisoft sexual harassment trial: Up to three years suspended prison sentences requested
The trial of three former top executives from French video game giant Ubisoft – the maker of games like Assassin's Creed and Far Cry - took place this week in Bobigny, France. Serge Hascoët, Thomas François and Guillaume Patrux appeared before the Bobigny criminal court on charges of psychological abuse, sexual harassment and attempted sexual assault. The prosecutor called for suspended prison sentences of up to three years and fines for all three, describing the accusations as 'extremely serious'. The public prosecutor's office requested an 18-month suspended prison sentence and a €45,000 fine against the company's former No. 2, Serge Hascoët; one year's imprisonment and a €10,000 fine against game designer Guillaume Patrux; and a suspended sentence of three years in prison as well as a €30,000 fine against the former vice-president of the editorial department, Thomas François. The verdict is expected on 2 July. The trial, seen as a landmark #MeToo moment in the male-dominated video game publishing industry, followed the publication of an in-depth investigation by Libération and Numerama in 2020. It highlighted working conditions plagued by harassment, humiliation and discriminatory comments, as well as the psychological, sexist and sexual harassment that had been going on at Ubisoft for around ten years. The testimonies that poured in painted a damning picture of what went on behind the walls of the Ubisoft studios. When François was questioned about a sexual assault that a former colleague had accused him of committing, and for which she had testified on the stand the previous day, he replied that he had 'no recollection.' The three defendants pleaded amnesia and their denial was roundly rebutted by the civil parties' lawyers. According to them, the trial was really about the 'extremely virile and childish culture' at Ubisoft, the French flagship of an 'industry built by men and for men.' The civil parties and the defence also deplored the fact that no proceedings have been brought against the legal entity Ubisoft, its CEO Yves Guillemot and Marie Derain, the head of human resources. 'This trial could have been exemplary,' according to Marc Rutschlé, union delegate at Solidaires Informatique. He told L'Humanité: 'It wasn't three isolated individuals who created this atmosphere of widespread harassment. Their impunity was organised. There are no defendants and many victims. The whole structural aspect has been evacuated.' Previously, Guillemot allegedly referred to some of the accusations as 'generational differences of opinion' and 'creative friction'.
