Australian Justis Huni loses to Fabio Wardley in WBA interim heavyweight world title bout
Australian heavyweight Justis Huni's valiant bid for the WBA interim world title has been ended by a devastating 10th-round knockout against rising English star Fabio Wardley. The 26-year-old from Brisbane had stepped in at short notice to replace injured American fighter Jarrell Miller. Huni appeared in complete control for nine rounds in front of a raucous crowd at Portman Road, the home of Wardley's beloved English football team Ipswich Town. Boasting a glittering amateur career, including a World Championships bronze, Huni looked keen to display his credentials on the big stage. He demonstrated his firepower from the beginning of the bout, causing Wardley problems with powerful combinations as he racked up round after round on the judges' scorecards. Lively footwork and impressive hand speed continued to trouble Wardley, who battled to contain his opponent going into the 10th round. But it was at this point Wardley somehow pulled out a stunning right-hand, forcing an astonishing KO and sending his relieved fans into wild celebrations. "That's my curse. I even said before this fight it only takes one second to switch off. It happened tonight," Hunis told DAZN. "I'm grateful to Fabio and his team and to Ipswich to be able to perform in front of you. Get behind him, he's going to do great things. "He's just an awesome fighter. He never gave up and he got the win, he deserves it. Thank you Ipswich for the opportunity to perform here, I'm grateful." Wardley, whose win will boost his WBA ranking with the sanctioning body, praised the previously unbeaten Australian for his performance. "Justis Huni is a great operator," Wardley said after the bout. "We'd drilled everything over and over again. I should've performed better in some of those rounds. Group 1 stars Treasurethe Moment and Vinrock continue to impress astute trainer Matt Laurie, as spring campaigns sharpen into focus. The Mornington trainer has a traditional spring path being considered for triple Group 1-winner Treasurethe Moment, with Yulong boss and owner Yuesheng Zhang to decide on a Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate grand final. 'It's got to be confirmed and agreed by the boss … Memsie (Stakes), Makybe (Diva Stakes), Turnbull (Stakes) and they're deciding whether she goes to the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate,' Laurie said. Treasurethe Moment has won nine of 11 starts in a stellar career to date, including the Group 1 VRC Oaks, Vinery Stud Stakes and Australian Oaks. 'If she doesn't win another one (Group 1) we got to be pretty happy with what she has done so far,' Laurie said. 'She has obviously got to take on the older horses now, it's a different league, so we'll see. 'Nine of 11 you'd think she's got something to offer.' Yulong has a stranglehold on the Cox Plate with reigning champion Via Sistina ($2.50) and new acquisition Carl Spackler ($26), a multiple American Grade 1 winner being aimed at Australia's best race. Treasurethe Moment is ready to start trot and canter work under saddle after a week on the treadmill. 'She's come back looking better than she did last time,' Laurie said. 'She's buzzing like she's ready to have a canter, so she must be feeling well.' Group 1 Sires' Produce winner Vinrock has also returned in great shape. 'I've been doing some flat, dressage work in the arena,' Laurie said. Meanwhile, Laurie has Sun Setting chasing a hat-trick in a 1200m Benchmark 64 on King's Birthday Monday at Mornington. Laurie saved Sun Setting from a tougher assignment at Flemington last Saturday, saddled Soft Love in race instead and missed by the barest margin. Sun Setting finished second in two summer outings at Mornington before a short break. The promising daughter of Pierata returned with a Moe maiden win and repeated the effort last start on Mornington home turf. 'She's going really well and she looks well placed,' Laurie said. 'I don't know what price she is but she'd be short enough … I thought no point running them against each other (Soft Love and Sun Setting), as they were both good chances. 'I think she would've given the Flemington race a good shake … we thought a midweek meeting at Mornington, where she has run well before, was a smart move.' Sun Setting is a $3.40 favourite in the 1200m Benchmark 64 at Mornington.

Australian heavyweight boxer Justis Huni has suffered the first loss of his professional career, getting knocked out when he was on track for victory on Sunday morning. Fighting Fabio Wardley in Ipswich in the UK, Huni was in control of the fight and ahead on the scorecards — on track for a 12th career win. But as the intensity lifted in the 10th round of the 12-round bout, Wardley landed a monster punch on Huni, sending the Australian falling backwards and down onto the canvas. But it was a heartbreaking loss for Huni, who now has a 12-1 record and will need to bounce back to keep his dream alive of being one the best heavyweight fighters in the world.
