Charai 'emerges as favourite' for head coach job after Rangers exit

Glasgow Times11 hours ago

The former Rangers assistant's contract was mutually terminated following Russell Martin's appointment.
Charai could soon be back on the touchline, with Belgian club Westerlo reportedly interested in him.
Timmy Simons, appointed last year, is in doubt of his position at Westerlo, and journalist David Van der Broeck claims Charai is the top contender to replace him.
Charai expressed gratitude to Rangers upon his departure.
He told the club's website: "As I leave Rangers, I want to thank everyone at the club for their support during my time here.
"This is a really special club, and as it enters a new era, I want to wish everyone associated with the club the very best for what comes next."
He also thanked the fans, saying: "Above all, I want to thank the Rangers supporters for their amazing backing across the period.
"We had some high moments and some low moments, but their support was the constant.
"It is something I will always remember and be forever grateful for."
Rangers issued a statement confirming Charai's departure.
It read: "Rangers can today confirm the departure of Issame Charai from the men's first-team coaching staff.
"Charai, who joined the club in January to assist Philippe Clement, remained on the coaching staff through Barry Ferguson's spell in charge.
"However, following the appointment of Russell Martin as head coach, it has been mutually agreed for Charai to move on with the best wishes of everyone at Rangers."

Dessers deal must mark a line in the sand for Rangers, writes GARY KEOWN... and an end to the Ibrox club being soft touches in the transfer market

Just under a year on, the figures still bring on a weary shake of the head. Five first-team squad members under contract shipped out the door. A grand total of £810,000 brought in for the lot in transfer fees. As an indication of just where Rangers ' reckless, scattergun approach to recruitment had been leading them, it didn't quite carry the same weight as letting Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent leave for nothing when there was once £30million of offers on the table. However, it was every bit as damning. Arguably, even more sobering.

Rangers cult hero bags biggest job of his life at 47 – just days after predecessor in role announced his OWN sacking

And in world football terms, they don't come much bigger than this in general. But only a few dare take on the task of managing the national team, given its storied history and reputation in the game with four World Cups and two European Championships. That challenge now falls on former Gers star Gennaro Gattuso, who has been appointed as the new manager of Italy. Gattuso, 47, takes over from Luciano Spalletti who just a few days ago announced his OWN sacking. Spalletti's time was up after a 3-0 defeat to Norway but he still took charge of the national side's next game against Moldova. Those results leave the Azzurri sitting third of the five teams in their World Cup qualifying group. Gattuso, who recently left Hajduk Split after narrowly missing out on the Croatian title, is understood to have accepted the role as first reported by Fabrizio Romano. He was given a heartfelt send off from Split after winning 20 of 43 games, drawing 14 and losing nine. Hajduk finished just two points behind eventual champions Rijeka. Gattuso started his managerial career at Swiss club Sion but was sacked after 12 games. He later coached Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa before landing the manager's role at AC Milan, where he had spent most of his playing career. Moment Ally McCoist interrupts live radio to congratulate his 'wee pal' on signing for Rangers Milan were somewhat in the doldrums during that time and the four years he spent as manager there yielded no trophies and he left in May 2019. He was appointed boss at Napoli later that year and won the Coppa Italia in his first season there. After being let go by Napoli in 2021, Gattuso returned to management with Valencia the following year but quit after six months and then had a similarly short spell with Marseille in which he was sacked after five months. Gattuso signed for Rangers in 1997, as part of an influx of Italians including Lorenzo Amoruso, Marco Negri and Sergio Porrini (Swede Jonas Thern also joined that season from Roma). He was just 19 when signed by then-boss Walter Smith but he fell out of favour under Dick Advocaat at Ibrox and was moved from his usual midfield position to right-back before being sold to Salernitana for £4m. Gattuso won the World Cup with Italy in 2006 and was capped 73 times for his country, scoring one goal. 4 Rino Gattuso during his time at Rangers Credit: Scottish News and Sport 4 Gattuso signed for Rangers in 1997 Credit: News Group Newspapers Ltd Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Rangers and 25 rivals enter a transfer battle royale for summer's must have as beaming chairman raves about him

Winger Poku is one of a number of summer targets interesting Russell Martin Barry Fry has warned Rangers they face a battle with 25 clubs across Europe if they want to land Kwame Poku. But the Peterborough director of football admits Gers could get a £10m diamond for buttons should they win the race for the Ghana international. ‌ Winger Poku is one of a number of summer targets interesting Russell Martin with Leicester City defender Connor Coady in talks over a move to Govan while Swansea's Harry Darling, Westerlo striker Matija Frigan and Maccabi Tel Aviv striker Dor Turgeman have all been linked. ‌ Poku could be the perfect fit to replace Vaclav Cerny, who has been priced out of a permanent move to Ibrox after his loan spell in Govan last season. The 23-year-old netted 12 goals and added eight assists in 27 League One games for Posh last season and also helped lift the Vertu Football League Trophy at Wembley against Birmingham who were understood to be leading the race for his signature until recently. Peterborough bosses hope Poku - signed from Colchester for £250,000 in 2021 - chooses to stay in England where the compensation tribunal for under 24 players is of a higher value than the FIFA regulated version for cross border moves. And Fry, who insists Poku is destined for the Premier League one day, said he has a list of suitors spanning some of the biggest leagues in Europe. The Peterborough stalwart told Mail Sport: 'Kwame's out of contract and to my knowledge he's speaking to 26 clubs, home and abroad, and he'll go wherever he wants to go. 'I spoke to him on Friday morning but he's not decided where he wants to go at the minute. ‌ 'He's such an exciting player. Wherever he goes, he'll be a fan's favourite. 'He spent a couple of years at Colchester and we took a punt on him. We have had a lot of offers for him that we've turned down because we wanted to get promotion. ‌ 'Now he has the choice. 'I've had loads of clubs from Portugal, Belgium, Germany on about him as well as loads of clubs in England. 'I was asking clubs for £5 million and £5 million in add-ons when they were interested previously. ‌ 'He has that potential, he's that good a player.' Should Poku choose to leave England for either Govan or Europe in the coming weeks then the compensation fee will be decided by the standard FIFA regulations. Similar to the deal that saw Joe Aribo move from Charlton to Ibrox six years ago for just £300,000. Fry said: 'Yeah, we'd get some from FIFA. We'd get some, but it wouldn't be ideal for us. 'It would be FIFA working out what we paid for him and what offers we've had for him and all that. 'I've never been in that situation, so I don't know whether it'll be a pound or a million. You know what I mean? I ain't got a clue. 'We would definitely prefer him to stay in England, that's for sure.'
