Philippines backs Asean-wide visa, eyes tourism boost from unified entry

MANILA, May 18 (Bernama-PNA) The Philippine Department of Tourism (DOT) has expressed strong support for the creation of a unified Asean visa, saying it could help position the region as a single, powerhouse tourism destination.
According to the Philippine News Agency (PNA), Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco made the statement during the SKIFT Asia Forum 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand last Thursday, where she served as one of the key speakers.
The proposal, inspired by the European Schengen visa and the Gulf Cooperation Council's joint visa, is gaining traction among member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).
"The Asean tagline is 'A destination for every dream.' And the Asean visa certainly is part of that dream,' Frasco said, as quoted in a DOT news release on Sunday (May 18).
"To be able to unify the Asean as a destination... is one that is aspirational for us in the Philippines.'
She bared that there's "similar interest' from other Southeast Asian nations about the unified visa system.
"We are very hopeful that the subject matter will again come up as the Philippines hosts the Asean in 2026,' she said.
The Tourism chief underscored the potential of enhanced regional cooperation despite existing competition among Asean countries.
"Competition is always very healthy, but collaboration is healthier in a sense that Asean coming together to work as a force for good for the world would really benefit all of our countries,' she said.
She cited the Philippines' partnership with Thailand as an example, pointing to the implementation of their "Two Countries, One Destination' campaign.
Frasco also highlighted the Philippines' cultural and culinary diversity as key selling points to Asean tourists.
"What we bring to the table... is a story-a story of a proud people that is the result of generations of influence,' she said. "You arrive in the Philippines as a guest, but you leave as family.' - Bernama-PNA

Ringgit slightly up against US dollar amid cautious sentiment
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened slightly higher against the US dollar on Tuesday amid caution about the outcome of trade talks between China and the United States. At 8 am, the local note made a small rebound to 4.2275/2370 against the greenback compared to Monday's close of 4.2290/2345. Meanwhile, the negative print for China's consumer price index has been ongoing for four consecutive months, with the latest reading standing at minus 0.1 per cent year-on-year in April, indicating a challenging economic outlook given weak demand,' he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam noted that the USD/MYR remained in a narrow range between RM4.231 and RM4.2458 yesterday amid cautious sentiment among traders and investors, with a similar trend expected to continue today. In early trade, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9242/9310 from Monday's 2.9344/2.9384, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.7300/7428 from 5.7392/7466 and gained vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8303/8412 from 4.8316/8379. The local currency traded mixed against most of its ASEAN peers. It improved versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2876/2952 from 3.2908/2953 but fell against the Thai baht to 12.9463/9846 from 12.9414/9642 on Monday. It traded almost flat vis-à-vis the Indonesian rupiah at 259.4/260.1 from 259.5/260.0 and was unchanged against the Philippine peso at 7.57/7.59.

Green energy needs regional cooperation: Madius

He made the call during the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Industry Cooperation Conference held recently, at the invitation of Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) President Datuk Frankie Liew and Tan Siew Ling, Vice President and Chairperson of the Women Entrepreneurs Committee. Advertisement As a keynote speaker and forum panellist, Madius highlighted that Asean is at a critical juncture in its energy transition and underscored the importance of striking a balance between reliability, affordability and sustainability in power supply. He said China, as a global leader in energy technology and industrial development, could play a pivotal role in supporting Asean's green transition through technology sharing, investment and technical expertise. 'To realise these goals, regional collaboration is vital. Working closely with global leaders such as China, and engaging in the exchange of technology, investments and knowledge, will accelerate our progress,' he said. Madius cited Malaysia's proactive development in solar photovoltaic (PV) energy and its close cooperation with other Asean nations as a reflection of the country's strong commitment to a sustainable and integrated regional energy landscape. He said Malaysia, through strategic partnerships, technological innovation and policy leadership, is playing a key role in driving the region's energy transition. 'China's advancements in photovoltaic module manufacturing are set to play a crucial role in the global shift towards renewable energy,' he added. Madius also commended the organisers of the conference and congratulated them on the establishment of the China–Asean Photovoltaic Industry Cooperation Committee and the China–Asean New Energy Vehicle Industry Cooperation Committee. He expressed hope that these new mechanisms would foster deeper collaboration in key green sectors, particularly photovoltaics and new energy vehicles, across the region. During the conference, Madius also introduced Sabah Electricity to international delegates. He explained that the company is 83 per cent owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), 17 per cent by the Sabah State Government, with the Ministry of Finance Malaysia holding a one per cent 'golden share.' He said Sabah, located in East Malaysia, faces unique challenges in power grid infrastructure due to its geographical landscape, but holds immense potential in advancing the green energy agenda. 'As the main utility provider for Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan, Sabah Electricity currently serves over 700,000 customers.
