Pride uncertainty- Birmingham's biggest annual event without a home next year
It brings in tens of thousands of people from across the world, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, inclusion and acceptance.
For the last five years, it's main festival site has been at Smithfield in the Gay Village. But from 2026 it won't be.
Work will begin later this year to develop the 17-hectare site into 3,000 homes, restaurants and event space, costing £1.9 billion pounds. It's a project that is now backed by the King's property company.
Festival organisers and Birmingham City Council say they've been working together to find a venue space for next year.
But Lawrence Barton, festival director of Birmingham Pride, says he doesn't feel hopeful that the council will be able to provide them with one.
Instead, he's posing an idea - to bring the festival back to the streets of the gay village.
He said: "It's been a challenge with the council because they haven't found us an alternative home we desperately need. But they can't perform miracles either.
"Birmingham pride is one of the largest in the UK. It needs protecting in my view. And the council do have some responsibility in that.
"It's time for us to reform what Pride is. There isn't a large park or another large space like Smithfields so we're going to bring Pride right back to the heart of the gay district and it's going to become a pride village.
"So it changes what pride is, it's going to be more community-focused, but it's time for change.
The idea, which is in its early stages, would see roads such as Sherlock Street, Kent Street and Hurst Street used as festival sites, with main stages, marquees and street parties on the roads themselves.
Southside Business Improvement District says original plans to develop Smithfield included a festival space for Pride, but those plans have since downsized.
Jo Kinsella, Chairman of Southside BID, said: "Well the BID is working with the council to look at festival space actually in Southside so the Hippodrome square at that lovely rainbow we've got there.
"Originally, the designs for Smithfield had festival space on there, but as the plans have changed, that's gotten smaller and smaller. So there is still quite a lot of work to be done to make sure that we can keep pride in Southside moving forward."
A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council and Lendlease, the developers for Smithfield, said:
'We've been in regular contact with the organisers of Birmingham Pride as plans for the regeneration of Smithfield have progressed. It's been a great site for Pride in recent years and we recognise the important role it has played in helping the festival grow and thrive.
'Birmingham Pride is now the largest community festival held in this city and is a fantastic celebration of our diversity. It has been great to see it grow from strength to strength, and its success means it is more of a challenge to find a suitable venue, and the City Council will continue to work with the organisers and partners to help secure its future.
'This year's Pride will be a particularly meaningful celebration as it marks the final event at Smithfield before the next phase of transformation begins. Construction work is set to begin later this year; bringing much-needed new homes and public spaces.
'One of the centrepieces of the masterplan, Manor Square, will be a major new civic space designed to bring people together year-round, with active retail and public areas to support community life. At every stage, the development is being shaped to be welcoming and inclusive, reflecting the energy, creativity and diversity of Birmingham's communities—including the spirit of Pride itself.
'We're proud to have played a small part in hosting Birmingham Pride over the years, and we'll continue to work closely with the organisers and the wider community as Smithfield evolves.'

Ozzy Osbourne's death certificate has key detail which has left fans smiling
Ozzy Osbourne's death certificate was released on Monday, revealing the heavy metal icon's cause of death and occupation, and fans have been left commenting on how 'fitting' it was presented. Ozzy Osbourne fans have pointed out a distinctive touch on the late rocker's death certificate that solidifies his place in heavy metal history. The Black Sabbath legend, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019, passed away aged 76 on July 22. He was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his death, which left a huge hole in hearts globally. Since his passing, an outpouring of tributes have come from fans and peers, with his children Kelly and Jack Osbourne sharing touching messages. The father-of-six's death certificate was released on Monday earlier this week, disclosing that Ozzy succumbed to an 'acute myocardial infarction' and 'out of hospital cardiac arrest'. It comes following emotional scenes of Sharon Osbourne at Ozzy's funeral. However, it was one key aspect of the certificate that caught fans attention and had everyone talking. The document officially lists the departed musician's occupation as "songwriter, performer and rock legend," as disclosed in the Mirror. Fans took to social media to express their thoughts, with one tweeting: "The 76-year-old icon defined generations of rock fans and left a legacy that will never die," when reflecting on the death certificate. Another fan noted: "Ozzy Osbourne's occupation was officially described as ROCK LEGEND on his own death certificate." Kelly Osbourne reached out to thank supporters for their kindness during what she described as the "hardest moment" of her life. In an Instagram post, the 40 year old shared: "I've sat down to write this a hundred times and still don't know if the words will ever feel like enough... but from the bottom of my heart, thank you." She expressed her gratitude, saying: "The love, support, and beautiful messages I've received from so many of you have truly helped carry me through the hardest moment of my life. Every kind word, every shared memory, every bit of compassion has meant more than I can ever explain." Kelly continued with raw honesty about her emotional journey, nothing that: "Grief is a strange thing - it sneaks up on you in waves - I will not be ok for a while - but knowing my family are not alone in our pain makes a difference. I'm holding on tight to the love, the light, and the legacy left behind. Thank you for being there. I love you all so much. – Kelly #BirminghamForever #OzzyForever." On Monday, Birmingham City Council gathered the careful collection of tributes left for the self-proclaimed Prince of Darkness, preparing to preserve them before presenting them to the Osbourne family. A small group of devoted fans observed from behind barriers, capturing photographs and embracing one another as council workers in high-visibility jackets gathered the flowers and mementos that had been placed before the bench and along the railings. The council pledged that the keepsakes would be collected and maintained "respectfully" following discussions with the rock legend's family, then kept "with the utmost care at a secure location, ensuring they are protected and treated with dignity". Officials stated: "In due course, they will be passed on to the Osbourne family, so they may keep them as a lasting reminder of the public's affection and support."

Mariah Carey left 'so mad' after suffering wardrobe malfunction 'that nobody saw' at Brighton Pride
Mariah Carey has revealed she was left 'so mad' after suffering a wardrobe malfunction at Brighton Pride last week, she shared on Heart Breakfast on Wednesday. The singer, 56, took to the stage in four figure-hugging outfits as she headlined the stage for an impressive two hours. While it all seemed great on stage from afar, Mariah was left panicking after something went terribly wrong with her outfit. Though she didn't reveal what exactly happened, she told hosts Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman that lucky 'nobody saw it'. Mariah said: 'It was a lot of rehearsing and then we had a wardrobe malfunction, which was kind of not cool, and it was right in the front of the area of the front. 'I saved it, nobody saw it, otherwise it would have been talked about, but nobody saw it. And I turned around and walked through the dancers and I was so mad.' Jamie added: 'You were? That doesn't sound like you.' 'Well, I can get mad', Mariah said. Zoe quipped: 'You're allowed to get mad'. Her packed setlist included hits like Vision of Love and Heroes as she gave the long-awaited performance that was initially scheduled for 2020, but was cancelled because of the Covid pandemic. She later wrote on Instagram: 'Thank you so much Brighton Pride for having me tonight! A special heartfelt thank you to the LGBTQ + community for your ongoing support. I will always be there for you. Love, MC.' She took the opportunity to show her support for the trans community by embellishing her pink jacket with the phrase 'Protect the dolls'. Mariah is reportedly paying over £250,000 for her hotel stay during her time in the UK, after arriving on her private jet. The Sun revealed she is staying at one of the top-floor suites at the Corinthia hotel on London's Embankment. Featuring a large terrace, wine cellar, private spa and living room lit with a real fire, the room costs around £20,000 per night. A source told the publication: 'She blocked out two weeks in the best suite. It's only the best for Mariah. Her royal gig is a huge deal, so naturally she is living like a queen.' Daily Mail contacted Mariah's representatives for comment. Mariah is taking to the stage at Sandringham's royal estate as part of the Heritage Live's large outdoor music concerts on August 15. And it seems Mariah is one of the Corinthia's best guests after Beyoncé reportedly 'bowed down' to the singer in June and 'packed up her £25k-a-night London penthouse for the diva songstress to move in.' The Single Ladies singer, 43, had booked a 12-night stay at the Corinthia while performing at London's Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. But she allegedly moved out at the weekend when self-confessed diva Mariah touched down to play at Capital's Summertime Ball on Sunday. A source told The Sun: 'Superstars as big as Beyonce and Mariah want to stay in only the best hotels. Beyonce had been staying in Corinthia's penthouses. 'But when Mariah flew in, Beyonce packed up so Mariah could take over her suites. It was like Beyonce was bowing down to another music queen.'
